2K To Announce Something Different About PC Than Consoles

Talk about NBA 2K15 here.

Modding is kind of a grey area in general, but the main difference is that using the NBA license requires developers to follow a lot of different rules regarding endorsements, player likenesses, and whatnot. They can let modding happen, but they can't really provide the tools for it or promote it too much, because they are contractually bound to present content that the NBA approves of. They can't say "Here's an NBA game, and here are the tools to make it into something quite different"; Bethesda on the other hand are at liberty to say "Here's our game, and here are some tools to change up the experience if you want". That said, I'm guessing Bethesda wouldn't heavily promote a mod that infringes on someone else's copyright, or indirectly promotes another developer's game.

For what it's worth, we have made inquiries about this in the past. When it comes down to it, the NBA has a tight grip on the reins, and are pretty specific about what can and can't go in the game. Anything that they feel would reflect badly on their image or could potentially cause problems with the player's union and whatnot is not going to be allowed.

Now, when it comes to modding any game, there's certainly going to be work that walks the line of fair use, or blatantly infringes upon copyright. Being something of a grey area, it usually doesn't become an issue, as long as people aren't charging money for it. The difference is that Bethesda is free to take that risk when they give out tools to edit their games (and companies like Ubisoft, who are obviously in the same industry, are probably reasonably relaxed about it), whereas Visual Concepts are bound by what the NBA says.

Remember, this is a league that insists inactive players wear suits on the bench, and fines players and coaches $25,000 for criticising the referees (even if they have a very valid argument). ;)

Well, they had good business reasons to instate those policies.

There is no good reason to force players to wear suits on the bench when they're inactive. What is so bad if they sit there with jeans and a simple shirt?

nothing per se

but this Rule was born in a time when Allen Iverson and his Street-Rapper Style where THE Trendsetter in the NBA

and the NBA didnt want to have that image... baggy pants... bling-bling etc..

just a fact not my opinion.. a Player like Dirk just seems 100% more natural in regular Jeans and Shirt then in a suit you know he NEVER would wear privatly

Going back to topic, a folder either in the game folder or in the user folder specifically for mods is an option that doesn't cost 2K anything at all and doesn't violate anything. It just reads the contents of the folder first and loads whatever is there if anything and even prioritizes it over downloaded updates. Basically, Keep My Mod integrated with the game.

This is more or less how NBA Live handled graphic mods back in the 06/07 era, from what I recall. You just dumped mods in their folder that was, I believe used for updates. You didn't have to overwrite original files, if you didn't want to, and could easily remove and change mods this way.

That's right, we had the render folder in 2003/2004, and the sgsm folder in 2005-08. Conflict between different mods was still possible unless you changed file names and pointers appropriately, but it was very handy and preferable to having to backup and overwrite files.

I'd be fibbing horribly if I didn't say that I wanted to take one of those old games (whichever is the most/easiest moddable) and make a real NBA Jam/College Slam/Arcade game to play.

Also, I miss FshEd, and whatever edited the dbf files (probably called something real obvious like DBFEditor) -- I can't tell you how many times I did hours of database work, forgot to rebuild, and lost it all. The good ol' days...

That'd be DB Commander. Definitely a lot easier, we had a Day One roster editor every year.

I think we figured it out. (Y) Not the worst thing to lose. Yeah, it's a really cool feature, but hopefully, in time, we'll have full cyberface editing back.

I wonder how fast it'll take before someone tries to scan their dick into the game.

dang! i want it, it takes time creating your face in CAP.

but if thats it, ok fine. they should give us a MOD tool in exchange. so we will not need to wait a volunteer programmer to create the tool for us.

By that we can create our cf and put it in the game on our own.

*anyway, i think there's something wrong in ronnie's skin tone, it looks awkward. you guys notice?

I think NBA Live 16 will have this feature, too, considering that EA UFC has it.
