Spambots 2016

As you may have noticed, we've been hit by a fair few spambots recently. They'll usually create new threads, but sometimes they'll reply to existing threads as well. They're easy to identify because they'll generally be completely off-topic, promoting some sort of product, and linking to an online store (or scam site). I've gone ahead and updated our security measures, which will hopefully curb the number of spambots for at least the next few months (they're always finding ways through, so we have to update those measures every now and again); however, any spambots that have registered before today won't be affected by that, and we'll have to weed them out as they present themselves.

To minimise the inconvenience for all of us, please keep a few things in mind:

  1. Don't click the links, as they may not be safe. If you do click them, it's at your own risk.

  2. Please don't reply to them, especially if they've created a new thread. When we encounter a spambot, we delete the account and all of its posts. Replying to them just creates more work for us, as we then need to clean up those posts as well.

  3. You can certainly report them if you like, but one of us will see them - they usually don't do a great job of hiding the fact they're spambots - and take care of them as soon as possible.

  4. Some of the recent spambots have apparently been sending private messages to random users as well. If that happens, feel free to report the message using the Report button or by shooting one of us a message, and we'll take care of it when we can. Once again, don't click the links.
