NLSC Podcast #543: Auction House Returns & Other NBA 2K25 MyTEAM News

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

As the NBA 2K25 preview season rolls on, this week we're reacting to reveal of the Steph Era, some of the other additions to MyNBA, the return of MyGM, and some enhancements to The W. We also read out some reactions from the community, from their thoughts on the new era to which one they're planning on playing. Suffice it to say, opinions on the Steph Era are divided - as we discuss, there are issues with the starting point if nothing else - but we're generally in favour of the idea. To that end, it inspired a session of NBA 2K17 where we took on LeBron's Cavaliers with Steph's Warriors. We recap that session as well as a game of NBA ShootOut 2004, and also touch on some more NBA roster trivia.

NLSC Podcast #544: Early NBA 2K25 Gameplay, Stat Padding, & Disrespect

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

You know what really grinds our gears? This week, we take a page out of Peter Griffin's book, and discuss a few things that are really bugging us. That includes Anthony Edwards' ridiculous comments about players being unskilled in bygone eras, some incredibly and unnecessarily hostile comments on social media, and content creators who seem to be following a script in order to become super shills. We also join the community in reacting to pre-release NBA 2K25 gameplay footage, and reflect on how it has impacted our excitement for the game. We've also got a few thoughts about The City in the wake of the latest Courtside Report, and finish up with a recap of a session revisiting NBA Live 2003.

NLSC Podcast #545: NBA 2K25 First Impressions

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA 2K25 is out now, so this week, we join the community in sharing our first impressions of the gameplay! Our time on the sticks has revealed a number of pros and cons, though we certainly reserve the right to change our minds as we continue to play the game and it receives updates. As such, we'll definitely have plenty more to say in the coming weeks and months! In the meantime, we give our views on ProPLAY, dribbling, shooting, player movement, and everything else that has jumped out at us so far, good or bad. We also reflect on some of the pre-release footage proving to be misleading, and feeling considerably better about NBA 2K25 once we got our hands on it.

NLSC Podcast #546: NBA 2K25, Two Weeks In

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

NBA 2K25 has been out for about a couple of weeks now, which means the annual honeymoon phase is drawing to a close. To that end, this week we join the community in following up on our first impressions with a rundown of our key likes and dislikes of the game so far. It's still mostly good news in our book, but we're not quite ready to declare it the best NBA 2K ever as some of our fellow gamers are. We also recap a co-op session in which we took on Dwight Howard's Magic with Derrick Rose's Bulls using the LeBron era rosters, leading us to reflect on those two squads. Finally, a new segment makes its debut, inspired by a surprising observation while playing NBA 08.

NLSC Podcast #547: Memorable Transactions, Fantasy Drafts, & The ABA

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Although we're still playing NBA 2K25 and have a few updates on what we've been doing in it, we have been talking about the game at length for a number of shows now, so this week we're putting it on the backburner. To that end, we recap a fun session playing NBA Live 06 PC with a work-in-progress ABA mod, and reflect on the league's legacy and importance in the history of basketball. We also join the community in reminiscing about fun and weird ideas and approaches that we've employed in fantasy drafts, as well as some of the most memorable transactions - good or bad - that our favourite teams have made during all of our years following the NBA.

NLSC Podcast #548: Memorable Player Retirements & NBA 2K25 Habits

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Derrick Rose has officially retired from the NBA, and naturally, we have a few thoughts in the wake of his announcement, from fond memories to whether or not he should have his jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls. This also leads us to join the community in reminiscing about some other player retirements that had a profound affect on us, as well as undeserved reputations that players have had difficulty shaking. We also discuss some exciting upcoming modding projects that johnz1 has planned for the PlayStation 3 version of NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, and provide an update on the modes that both we and the community are currently spending the most time with in NBA 2K25.

NLSC Podcast #549: Underdone Players & Community Spirit

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Despite it never being easier to share highlights and connect with fellow gamers, we've noticed a general reluctance to participate in those activities and discussions nowadays. After considering some of the potential causes for this shift, we urge the commuity to be more proactive in sharing their love of basketball gaming, and to take an interest in what others are doing on the virtual hardwood. We also pay tribute to the late Dikembe Mutombo, and join the community in discussing the players who have been underdone in video games over the years - our Underdone Starting Five if you will - as well as our favourite current and former NBA players.

NLSC Podcast #550: All-Time Mo-Cap Starting Five

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Assuming that we could get anyone from NBA history into a mo-cap suit, who are the five players that we'd choose to perform motion capture for a basketball video game? This week, we join the community in naming our All-Time Mo-Cap Starting Fives! We also recap a most unusual session with NBA Live 2000 PC in which we took on the Indiana Pacers with the Detroit Pistons, and got utterly smoked by the sharpshooting duo of Reggie Miller and Chris Mullin. In addition to that, we've got an update to share about getting back on the court, recommendations for basketball shoes, and some reflections to share as both digital broadcasting milestones and a milestone birthday loom.

NLSC Podcast #551: Does Gravity Ball Belong in NBA 2K25?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Does Gravity Ball belong in NBA 2K25? This week, we join the community in reacting to the new mode for The City that's not only paid downloadable content, but for our money, frankly has very little to do with basketball! To that point, we discuss 2K's motivations for adding it to the game, and the bad precedent that it could set for further paid content. The Season 2 patch has also arrived for NBA 2K25, and we have thoughts to share on the gameplay fixes and other updates that it includes. We wrap up the show by touching on an important issue that's unfortunately been affecting the modding community for some time, and has recently come to a head.

NLSC Podcast #552: Our Thoughts On The Current State of the NBA

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

As the 2025 season gets underway, how do we feel about the current state of the NBA? This week, we join the community in sharing our opinions of the league these days, from three-point barrages and lacklustre defense to zero-tolerance technical fouls and the pace of the game. While many of us are on the same page, there are definitely some differing views! In a similar vein, a comment from Charles Barkley prompts us to revisit the topic of load management; a practice that seems both myopically counterproductive and decisively anti-fan. We also discuss some other recent issues, including WNBA blunders, unwelcome advertising, pushy pop-ups, so-called gurus, and a truly terrible Dwyane Wade statue.

NLSC Podcast #553: Bringing Three All-Time Greats Into Today's NBA

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

This week's show is all about the past, present, and future...and some combinations thereof! First of all, we tip things off with a recap of a fun co-op session of NBA 2K13 PC, in which we used a 1996 roster to take on the Hawks with Shaq and Penny's Magic. Needless to say, it not only reminded us of how well NBA 2K13 holds up, but just how special the 1996 season was. Next, we join the community in naming three all-time greats that we'd want to bring into today's NBA, and why they're our picks. Finally, we and the community choose from a list of hypothetical features that we'd like to see added in NBA 2K26.

NLSC Podcast #554: For the Love of the Video Game

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

What is it that keeps us hooked on the virtual hardwood? This week, we join the community in sharing the reasons why we play basketball video games, ranging from a love of the sport, to bonding experiences with family and friends, to joyful fantasy and escapism. Following on from last week, we and our listeners pick three stars from the 2000s to bring into the modern NBA in their prime. In response to the end of online support for NBA Live 18, we note how the offline version of The One succeeds where MyCAREER fails nowadays. We also share an interesting tidbit about Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, and answer a question about bad basketball video games in another edition of Andrew Asks.

NLSC Podcast #555: Player Lock & Preferred Roles

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Player Lock is arguably one of the most underrated gameplay features outside of its use in career and online team play modes, but picking a suitable role is paramount whichever mode you're playing. To that end, this week we join the community in choosing the players that we'd most prefer to lock on, from a shortlist of notable names from the 2000s and today. We also reflect on the excitement of making a new video game purchase - especially when physical media is involved - and share some more advice for capturing highlights on the virtual hardwood, whether you're playing on PC or console.

NLSC Podcast #556: Terrible Takes & Devastating Losses

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

What are some of the worst basketball and basketball video game takes that we've encountered over the years? This week, we join our fellow gamers and hoop heads in recalling an assortment of truly terrible opinions that definitely made us scoff! We also played a couple of co-op games of NBA Live 18 using Parsec and the Xbox App. As we discuss, these sessions not only reminded us of the promising potential that NBA Live 18 had, but also saw us gain some satisfying revenge following a tough defeat. On that note, we also join the community in reflecting on the most devastating losses that we've endured on the virtual hardwood.

NLSC Podcast #557: Go-To Moves & The Myth About Sim

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

What does "sim" really entail when it comes to basketball video games? There are definitely some myths and misunderstandings, which we're certainly eager to clear up! This includes how realism affects the virtual hardwood, and how recent games have performed in their approach to the sim style. Talking real hoops leads into us joining the community in recalling the go-to moves that we like to use when we play basketball, whether it's in an organised league or pick-up. We also recap a co-op session of NBA 2K17 featuring the Ultimate Classic Teams Roster and a couple of quintessential video game teams, and provide a PSA regarding NBA 2K23 and its impending server shutdown.

NLSC Podcast #558: Does The NBA Have A Three-Point Problem?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The state of the NBA is once again on our minds, and so we pose the question: are three-pointers actively ruining the league and making it far less fun to watch? As much as we enjoy long-range sharpshooters doing their thing and a timely trey that makes the net explode, we also believe that the chucking is really getting out of hand and affecting the overall quality of play. It's clear that we're not alone in feeling this way, and to that end, this week we join the community in discussing potential ideas of how to best combat the three-point problem that is afflicting the NBA, and for that matter, modern basketball in general.

The Best Sim & More Three-Point Madness

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

There have been scores of basketball video games released over the years, but which one has been the best sim? This week, we join the community in nominating some of the top candidates for titles that have achieved the most realism on the virtual hardwood. We also reflect once again on what it actually means to be sim, from playcalling and performance to mechanics and motion systems. Following up on last week's show, we also discuss even more madness with three-pointers in the NBA, as teams continue to brick treys at an alarming and historical rate, driving away hardcore hoop heads who are desperate for a better product.

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Merry Christmas and Season's Greetings, basketball fans and gamers! It's that time of the year again and we're definitely in the holiday spirit, so this week we're joining the community in asking Santa for three gifts that would grant some of our fondest wishes related to basketball and basketball gaming. Some of them might take a Christmas miracle to make happen, but if nothing else, it seems that quite a few of us are on the same page with our wishlists! NLSC Podcast #561: Gifts & New Year's Resolutions

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

With the 2024 holiday season drawing to a close and a new year almost upon us, this week we're joining the community in sharing the basketball and basketball gaming gifts that we gave and received for Christmas, as well as listing some of our resolutions for both real hoops and the virtual hardwood in 2025. We also recap a couple of co-op games with the PC versions of two titles released some twenty years apart: NBA Live 95 and NBA 2K15. In addition to reflecting on two very different but nevertheless enjoyable sessions, we discuss how great of a sim game NBA Live 95 was for its time, and the ruthless AI that makes NBA 2K15 suitably challenging.

NLSC Podcast #562: Final NBA 2K25 Review & Unwritten Rules

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Now that 2025 is underway and NBA 2K25 has been out for a few months, what are our ultimate thoughts on this year's game? This week, we join the community in giving NBA 2K25 a final score, and running down the various pros and cons across the board following ample time on the sticks. We also reflect on the unwritten house rules that we employ to make our multiplayer basketball gaming sessions fair and enjoyable, and ideally civil with minimal fights! Finally, we react to a bewildering story about a former top draft pick being utterly clueless when it comes to basketball history. Of course, given the player in question, we're not entirely surprised!

NLSC Podcast #563: Who We Want To See Make A New College Basketball Game

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

With rumours that both EA Sports and Visual Concepts are considering bringing back their respective college basketball video games, which series would we personally prefer to see return? Our answer may surprise you...or then again, perhaps not! We also join the community in naming the players from NBA history and today that we most wish we could play like. It's probably not a huge spoiler to mention that among others, we wanna be like Mike! Finally, we wrap up with a recap of a fun co-op session of NBA Live 2004 in which we took on the Houston Rockets with the Phoenix Suns, and reflect on it being a transitional year for both of those teams, as well as the NBA Live series.

NLSC Podcast #564: Best of the Best

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which NBA players are the best of the best when it comes to dunking, shooting, shot blocking, stealing the ball, and going one-on-one, both in real life and on the virtual hardwood? This week, we join the community in sharing our picks in each of those categories. We also recap a fun session using a work-in-progress Kobe Era roster for NBA 2K25 PC, in which we took on the Seattle Supersonics with the Golden State Warriors. Naturally, we also reflect on those squads, and the massive trade that took place between them in 2003! Finally, we discuss some of the aspects of basketball that video games still struggle to implement correctly, or accurately portray.

NLSC Podcast #565: Love What You Play & Make Time For It

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

How many hours per week are we currently spending on the virtual hardwood, and which modes are keeping us hooked? This week, we join the community in crunching the numbers, and sharing our preferred ways to play. Needless to say, we also make a point of encouraging everyone to stick to the activities and style of play that is the most fun for them! We also poll our fellow basketball gamers and hardcore hoop heads on their picks for the era in NBA history that was the deepest in terms of talent, as well as which one boasted the biggest array of stars. While it may sound contradictory, they aren't necessarily one and the same in everyone's eyes!

NLSC Podcast #566: Doncic Traded For Davis & Criminally Underrated Players

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The basketball world was shocked by the announcement that the Dallas Mavericks had traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Naturally, we have a few thoughts on the deal, and what it means for both teams moving forward! Criminally underrated players from yesteryear are also on our minds as of late, so this week, we join the community in naming some of the ballers who deserve to be talked about more often. Finally, we recap an excellent co-op session with the PC version of NBA Live 2005, in which we took on the Philadelphia 76ers with the Orlando Magic. We also compare it to NBA Live 06, and other games in the NBA Live series.

NLSC Podcast #567: Where Do We See NBA 2K in Five Years?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

At the suggestion of one of our listeners, this week we're breaking out the proverbial crystal ball to gaze into the future, and discuss what we think NBA 2K - and video games in general, for that matter - will be like in five years. This includes our expectations for innovations in gameplay, graphics, and modes, as well as fairness to gamers and the possibility that NBA 2K will finally have competition again at some point, be it NBA Live or another title. We also touch on the idea that consoles will be replaced by a Netflix-like streaming service for games, VR, and some other predictions regarding the future of gaming.
