How to use your PG

Postby Wim.vl on Mon Jan 02, 2012 8:29 pm

I've heard several times that the PG's are becoming the main force in the league, but this trend is not visible in 2K12.
With the new post system - which in my opinion, is very good - I'm leaning more towards my PF and C than before. But still, like in previous games, the role of the point guard is undervalued.
I prefer Luke Ridnour (69 with 84 3pt's) above Chris Paul, because I can not use CP3.
Most of the time when I penetrate through the lane, I get blocked, or if I draw a 2nd defender, and I dish it to the free man, he gets blocked by the same defender who came to help on my PG!

I've searched for this on the web, and it looks like other 2K fanatics face this problem.
So, I'ld like to ask to share your experience about the use of point guards, to help make the game better. Any response is appreciated

Thanks, and best wishes for 2012

PS: am I posting this in the right forum? :D

Use your other players for picks even if they don't set picks. In other words, run around them to ditch the defense.

When you drive, try changing your shot in mid-shot. That helps avoid blocks.

Look to passing, even when you drive. Draw the D, pass to an open man.

Thanks for the tips, but do players driving the lane often change their shot, you think?
Dribble pull-ups often go off the mark also, and there really is no speed-advantage when your one on one with a big guy, but that speed issue also occured in previous games.
Drawing the defence often results in a blocked shot, after the dish, because the D recovers (too) quick.

Lower gameplay speed, which should lower the speed of help defense to a realistic level and allow you to better determine when you should drive and when you should dish.

Use picks, watch your defenders momentum, if a big man comes to help out you either have to pump fake him, adjust your shot away from him or pop for a quick floater or runner before you're near him (only if you have enough room obviously).

Most cases simply performing a layup on the opposite side of the net as the help is coming from is enough. It'll use the basket as a guard, much like in real life.

I've also noticed when a big man defender comes to help too far from the basket a hop step can sometimes get around him, allowing for an easy layup.

I haven't played with CP3 specifically, but I have no problem driving into the lane with Deron Williams, sure I get blocked maybe twice a game when driving with him, but most times I can get away from them and at least draw a foul once I get past my perimeter defender.

The gameplay speed really seems a nice hint. I've never tried to touch it, because I'm scared I'll be playing with slow grandpa's instead of NBA athletes. But I guess you have a point there!

As for the hop step: before 2K11, I never used it, but now I'm using it all the time, but the animation often stops, because I bump into the defender, instead of hopping next to hem. But it is a very useful shot stick move though.

And I wasn't really focusing on Paul, just as an example, because he's such an allround player. D-Will, CP3 or Rose, even Collison, the self-claimed 'fastest PG in the league', I just don't manage to get to the hoop and score. Or it's an assist, or it's a turnover (block or miss). But I hope changing the game speed will help !
Thank you very much for you time and help :)

Just do the gather, the defense will be killed when you use it. Using Irving and I'm penetrating, mostly reverse or floater(not sure what you call it.)

Anyways, I have a question, why the heck did they change the PLAY gameplay. No Quick Screen, etc. It's just, Irving Isolation, Varejao post.

What do you mean 'the gather'? The hop step?

Because Quick Screen can be easily activated by pushing L1 and selecting the player you want to set the pick. (Hold it for pick and pop)
And because you have a new play call system which allows you to select up to 25 plays PER player, including post, iso, coming off screen, ...

I don't get the new play call system. And I believe we have different controls. My L1 is clutch. R1 is turbo. So yeah, what's your L1?

And yep, You can easily pass your defender when you gather.

Maybe it's L2 then? There are 2 buttons which activate a symbol above each player. One button (R1 for me) activates direct passing, so I push R1, then the shoot button, and I'll automatically pass the ball to me Forward (Lebron for instance). The other button (L1 for me) activates the same symbols, but if I push the shoot button now, it'll bring up the play call system, this time specifically all the plays designed for lebron. Lebron has about 5 panels x 5 plays to choose from, so that makes 25 assigned plays, but that's because he's so good.
If I hold the shoot button instead of pressing it, lebron will come set a screen for me.
You should check out the manual (you can downlaod it online) and go to scrimmage; learn how to work with the picks and playcall system, it's real noooice ! :czar:
