Spurs survive Durant's career-best 50, Thunder late rally with Ginobili's versatility
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (OKC :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, January 1 -- The San Antonio Spurs once again had to hold their breathe after watching another big lead disappear, but escaped AT&T Center with a 106-105 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPN. Tony Parker scored 18 points and Tim Duncan posted 17 as the Spurs almost surrendered a 18-point lead before holding on. Parker gave the Spurs the lead when he snapped a 14-14 tie with a basket in the first period, igniting a 13-3 run that gave San Antonio a 10-point lead. Another run in the third quarter, this one 11-2, gave San Antonio what looked like a comfortable 18-point lead at that point, but unfortunately, that's when things started to go down the drain. The Thunder went on a 14-2 tear in the fourth quarter, pulling them within 102-96 with 1:12 to go on a jumper by James Harden. “They hit some really difficult shots,” Parker said. “They just cranked it up and turned up the intensity. You know they're going to do that when losing by double-digits, and we just didn't turn it up with them.” Kevin Durant cut the deficit to 102-100 with a fastbreak dunk, but Parker was fouled on a leaner and he drained both free throws. A 3-pointer by Russell Westbrook pulled Oklahoma City within only one point, 106-105, but then ran out of time; a desperation half-court shot by Harden was an airball.

“They shot the ball extremely well down the stretch. They came back into the game with huge shots and we weren't making our own, so they made it a game,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We got lackadaisical with the big lead and sometimes that happens.” Durant finished with a career-high 50 points for the Thunder -- the second time in the last three games that the Spurs suffer a 50-point game from a opposing team's player. “Happy about the career-high, but not happy with this result,” he said. The Spurs have won 10 of their last 11 games. “The last few games have been too close for comfort, but we managed to get a win both times,” said Manu Ginobili, who had 11 of his 15 points in the first half, to go with four rebounds, four assists, four steals and also a block to boot. Jeff Green contributed with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Westbrook 14 and 17 assists, as the Thunder dropped their first contest after a three-game winning streak. “I'm not happy at all. You've got to be happy about the triumph, but the whole picture, it ain't pretty right now,” Duncan added. “We can't throw away games like this, not even two guys score 50 on us. We got to find a way to lock in.” The Thunder had 31 assists on 40 field goals, but were outrebounded (44-38 for the Spurs) and their bench was worse (36-10 for San Antonio's).

The Thunder (21-14) are battling for the fourth playoff spot in the West with the Houston Rockets (19-13). “It is very important to win games on the road, but today we just got too far behind and just ran out of gas for the final punch,” Westbrook said. “We have to start winning on the road like we do at home if we want to make the playoffs on a high seed.” San Antonio played without DeJuan Blair for the fourth game in a row, as he suffered a lower back strain on December 23 at Orlando, but his return ain't very far away. Thunder swingman Thabo Sefolosha did not play because of a broken back suffered in mid-November. He's a week away from his comeback. Rookie James Anderson shot 6-of-8 from the field, including four rebounds for 15 points (13.5 ppg in his last 4 games). “I've got great teammates. They're the same shots I've been getting all season and they've been preaching me all season to keep shooting,” the rookie said. “They've been a positive influence on me since I've been here. I'm just thankful they are still finding me when I'm open.” The Spurs play their next three games on the road: January 4 at New York and January 5 at Boston, before flying to Indiana on January 7.

Just verified: the Suns are 12-19 and Nash is injured; playing limited minutes. Averaging "only" 7.4 assists. Free throws - he's 2nd, check again :wink:

And Durant beasted again. 50 points... I was thinking in improving Maggette's defense. Seeing Tiago's stats, wouldn't be surprised if he's the 2nd rookie ever to win the 6th Man trophy. :cheeky:

It was an all-around effort on the boards. Also happy that Anderson is performing; when Manu struggles, Anderson explodes.

Durant was a monster but I'd say I killed all the other Thunder's... Harden couldn't make a shot to save his life... most of Westbrook's turnovers were fastbreak points for me. A stolen game for the Spurs.

Lackluster Spartans suffer 3-point rampage by Wildcats, lose first game of the season
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (Michigan State :: Villanova)

VILLANOVA, January 2 -- The Michigan State Spartans lost for the first time this season, getting walloped by the Villanova Wildcats, 81-61, in a game where there was only one positive thing to say about the visiting team: the game of Dolph Lundgren Jr. “'Two minutes left in the contest, like the loud speakers said,” Lundgren humbly said. “That was the only good message in the game.” Lundgren led Michigan State with 16 points and 13 rebounds, but as the Spartans found themselves down by 9 at the half and by 24 entering the fourth quarter, they couldn't muster more than a half-hearted effort that cut the lead to 13 with 3:41 left in the game. “We didn't have the fight to fight through this,” center Delvon Roe added. Roe added 16 points of his own for the Spartans, but Michigan State gave the Wildcats spirit by shooting 13-of-28 3-pointers (46 percent), failing to box out, even with rebounders within arm's reach. They were outrebounded 46-39 and, worst of all, allowed 31 bench points for Villanova (only 6 points from the bench for Michigan State). “I'm not gonna try to make excuses,” guard Kalin Lucas said. Lucas scored 6 points but a game-best 10 assists.

The Wildcats were nothing but remarkable in their dismantling of the Spartans, who came in their turf undefeated. “Our offense really kept them off balance,” Corey Stokes said. “We were pushing it. Every time they'd score we were coming right back at them.” Stokes scored a game-high 19 points to go with five boards and five assists. With skilled big men and versatile, athletic wing players, Villanova was a nightmare: to their credit, they made the most of every advantage they had, torturing the Spartans with patient ball movement, a relentless pace and deadly 3-point shooting. Even center Maurice Sutton made a trey, finishing with 15 points from the bench. Forward Taylor King added 12 points, 11 rebounds and another five assists. “It wasn't really about them, it was about us,” point guard Kevin Johnson said. Even getting 18 combined rebounds from their starting big men, the Spartans couldn't pull it off. The Wildcats received solid production all-around their 12-player roster.

    Weekly Rewind N° 10 • Jazz winning streak, Earl Smith, injuries and more...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | January 2nd, 2011

    Image
    SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: in my opinion, the most interesting game of the week; signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

    Utah cruises by Trail Blazers for 7th straight victoryDeron Williams fell only one assist short of a double-double as the Utah Jazz stretched their winning streak to 7 game. Williams had 25 points, 9 assists and even a career-high six steals as the Jazz defeated the Portland Trail Blazers, 115-95 on December 30. At halftime, the Jazz talked about doing a better defensive job on the Blazers' top two offensive players, Brandon Roy and Andre Miller. Utah clamped down in the second half as Roy finished with 23 points and Miller had 17. Roy also had five turnovers and Miller had four. “Everybody played defense,” said Utah's Allen Iverson, who had 14 points. “Both Brandon and Andre are great players. In the second half we limited them and stopped them in transition.” The Blazers duo's ballhandling mistakes were costly. “Our turnovers hurt the team, badly,” said Miller, as he and Roy combined for 9 turnovers. Utah's increased defensive intensity thwarted Portland's offensive game. Al Jefferson and Mehmet Okur scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Jazz.

    Smith, Nuggets to go separate ways next year • The Nuggets' explosive swingman J.R. Smith has decided to not re-sign with the Denver Nuggets when his contract comes to an end in June. Smith already has made up his mind on an easy call in some experts' minds, as he had numerous problems with the Nuggets organization in the past. Smith is hoping he can work out a deal with a high-profile team, ready for a championship contending season. Entering the New Year, Smith was averaging a career-high 16.5 points, in also a career-best .457% from the field. “My agent and I are definitely trying to get me something new,” Smith said. “This is probably been one of the best years of my career and it's my contract year. I must admit I enjoyed playing here, a lot. But looks like the organization thinks something different. I thank them for this year with the Nuggets, but we must take different paths.” Besides Smith, the Nuggets also have expiring contracts in Melvin Ely, Anthony Carter, Shelden Williams, Arron Afflalo and Kenyon Martin.

    Players of the Week • The Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant and the Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played December 26 - January 1. This is Durant's 4th POTW award in the last 5 weeks. Durant and the Thunder had a 3-1 week, with wins over Dallas, New Jersey and Atlanta, and a heartbreaking loss to the Spurs in the first game of 2011, where he had a career-high 50 points. In the victory over the Nets, he had 46 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, ending the week with incredible averages of 41.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Chicago's Rose averaged 31.2 points along with 3.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and even 3.2 steals, as the Bulls posted a perfect 4-0 week; triumphs against Detroit (35 points, four boards, six assists by Rose), Milwaukee (Rose with 22 points, 5 boards, 10 assists and four steals), New Jersey and Cleveland.

    Power RankingsBest teams of the week? Chicago (4-0), Utah (4-0), Miami (3-0), Boston (3-0) and Charlotte (3-0). The worst? Golden State (0-4), Toronto (0-3), LA Clippers (0-3), Portland (0-3) and Washington (1-4). High jumps -- Charlotte (+14), Indiana (+6), Phoenix (+6), Chicago (+5). Free falls -- Washington (-8), Atlanta (-6), Golden State (-6), New Jersey (-5), LA Clippers (-5). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here.

    Injury report • Sorted by injuries with most duration, here you can check the full injury report. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will miss the next month of action because of a broken back. Warriors coach Keith Smart said that Curry had a “terrible fall” and would be sidelined indefinitely. Curry will not accompany the Warriors for at least a month, up to six weeks of absence. Golden State went 0-4 without Curry this week. In other news, Raptors power forward Amir Johnson will be on the sidelines fot at least two weeks, marking the latest blow to this team, that already lost Andrea Bargnani for the remainder of the season. Coach Jay Triano said that Johnson will be out after he strained his abdomen, and he would “miss some time,” but admitted he was more concerned about the Italian's absence.

    All-Star Voting • The 2011 NBA All-Star Ballot was unveiled on November 18th, during a special tip-off event in Los Angeles, the Official Host City of NBA All-Star 2011, and All-Star Balloting began on November 25th at 3 p.m. ET. The 60th NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S., and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages, will be played at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011. NBA All-Star 2011 in Los Angeles will bring together some of the most talented and passionate players in the league’s history for a global celebration of the game. Los Angeles and the STAPLES Center will host NBA All-Star 2011, marking the fifth time The City of Angels and the second time STAPLES Center will be the site of the annual celebration. STAPLES Center last played host to NBA All-Star in 2004, and L.A. also hosted the All-Star Game in 1963, 1972, and 1983. Hawks sign Sundiata Gaines • Atlanta Hawks general manager Rick Sund announced today that the team has signed guard Sundiata Gaines to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gaines was originally signed to two 10-day contracts by the Utah Jazz last season, before being signed for the remainder of the season. Gaines appeared in seven games for the Jazz and famously hit a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to beat Cleveland on January 14. The Jamaica, N.Y., native had averages of 23.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists in 14 games with the D-League’s Idaho Stampede prior to being signed by the Jazz.

    Pistons fire John Kuester after 11-game losing streak • The Detroit Pistons fired head coach John Kuester yesterday and replaced him with assistant Hugh Wilks, one day after an embarrassing 28-point loss at home against Boston. Detroit started the season with a struggling 11-9 record, surprisingly leading the Central Division, but then went on an 11-game losing slide. GM Joe Dumars said last Wednesday's 104-76 loss to the Celtics was the final straw. It was Detroit's second-worst loss of the season, following a 36-point loss to Toronto on December 7. “No need to say that the game against the Celts was an absolute ass-kicking,” Dumars said. “When you look back, it's a culmination of things that didn't go our way. We want to win like in '04.” Dumars added Wilks would likely be in charge for the rest of the season, unless another disaster occurs. So far, the things have turned around. The Pistons' first game under Wilks was last night at Phoenix, and put an end to the 11-game slide with a 100-82 win over the Suns.

I like it too. Presentation is top-notch; couldn't be better imo. I'd like it a bit better if you cut down a bit on the paragraphs in the recaps. :wink: They're a bit too time consuming to read, and it'll save you some time when writing as well. After all, it's just one game out of 82. :P

Gallinari, Knicks rout Spurs behind fourth quarter rally and 3-pointer rampage
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: NYK)

NEW YORK, January 4 -- Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich felt helpless as he watched a 9-point lead disappear in the second quarter against the Knicks. He knew he had to rest Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker a little longer before bringing them back in the game. In only their second game of 2011, the Spurs were outscored 40-26 in the final period, to lose 121-104 loss to the Knicks at the Madison Square Garden, but it was the super sub, Danilo Gallinari's 35-point performance that sparked New York to the victory. The fact that Ginobili spent the first 8+ minutes of the fourth quarter on the bench made the loss even harder to swallow. “Of course, I'd love to play my starters for the whole 48 minutes. But they have to rest,” Popovich said. “If you ask me, we lost a game that we should have won, but it's still good, still positive energy. How they shot from 3-point land, that happens only once a year.”

Amar'e Stoudemire posted an all-around statline, with 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals, but it was Gallinari and Kelenna Azubuike who were the difference makers. The duo combined for 16 points during a 18-4 spurt in the fourth, that gave the Knicks the victory. Gallinari hit two consecutive 3-pointers and Azubuike punctuated the surge with another trey that gave the Knicks a 102-90 lead. Gallinari and Azubuike combined for 64 points -- 11-of-15 shots from beyond the arc. The Italian posted a game-best 35 points as a reserve, and solidified his run for Sixth Man of the Year. “It's one of those games where you look at each other as a coaching staff,” Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. “I was surprised, how a player would come out and have a productive game like this off the bench.” Azubuike added 29 points, 11-of-16 from the field. The Spurs shot just 11-of-28 in the fourth -- 19-of-26 for New York; the Knicks shot a whooping 57 percent from the floor, 50-of-87 field goals. They also had 36 assists on those 50 shots.

Corey Maggette scored 11 of his 23 points in the first quarter and Manu Ginobili added 22 for San Antonio, who are 3-2 without DeJuan Blair. Blair, the second player in the starting frontcourt, went down with a lower back strain in December 23. Tim Duncan added 16 points and nine boards for the Spurs, who also enjoyed Tiago Splitter's 12 and 7 off the team's bench. But the Knicks bench outscored its Spurs counterparts, 44-32, boosted by Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov's best effort as a Knick, 5 points and five boards. “They came in and gave us an incredible boost,” Stoudemire said. “There's really no adjectives for Gallo's effort tonight. You look at the things he does on the floor, it excites us as teammates.” Tony Parker added 9 and a team-best 10 assists for San Antonio, but Raymond Felton outplayed him with 7 points and a game-high 13 dimes. “The Knicks needed a win badly and we played like it really didn't matter to us, I would say,” Parker added. “They will be very dangerous in the playoffs for the other East teams. For us, we still have to bring it every night, even with all those injuries we had. There's no other remedy.”

You really can't wait until playoffs, 50 games left :lol:

Axel. wrote:I like it too. Presentation is top-notch; couldn't be better imo. I'd like it a bit better if you cut down a bit on the paragraphs in the recaps. :wink: They're a bit too time consuming to read, and it'll save you some time when writing as well. After all, it's just one game out of 82. :P

Thanks man, I ended up cutting some things from the recap, but a lot of things happened in this game.

40 points from the Knicks in the fourth! Looks like nearly every live 2003 game I've played recently. :lol:
