LeBron James: The King15 Feb, 2011NEW YORK (AP) – After consecutive quiet All-Star Games
LeBron James decided that he would buck the trend. “I couldn’t do this (not make an impact) three times in a row. I decided to turn it up a little,” James said in his podium interview after the game.
The Cleveland Cavaliers star and regining league MVP proved that he is the best player in the game as he scored 35 points and added 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. The Eastern Conference All-Stars trailed for parts of the game but still always looked in control, simply because they had James on their side. After the game the coach of the Eastern Conference, Maimi Heat’s Erik Spoelstra, stated, “No one was more composed and focussed than LeBron. That’s why he was able to command the ball and make things happen.”
The East started the game off strong with a 12-2 run midway through the first period. The Western Conference would come back strong in the second quarter and the first half ended with the teams seperated by just 2 points.
Kobe Byrant was brilliant in the second quarter as he scored 14 of his 17 points.
The game was a see-sawing affair for much of the second half, which saw plenty of lead changes. The East’s
Dwight Howard scored all of his points in the second half including a number of rim rocking dunks that brought the crowd to their feet. Howard’s shot blocking prowess was also on display as he swatted 6 shots, some of them late in the final quarter as the East built up a double digit lead.
The Eastern All-Stars turned the game around in the middle of the final period as they went on a scoring tear and opened up a 16 point lead with just 4 minutes remaining. That was when Sacaramento Kings and self-proclaimed league MVP
Moses Chara stepped up to the plate and delivered an amazing display of shooting. After struggling for much of the game, Chara knocked in three straight long range shots. The score, which was sitting at 107-91, was bumped up to 107-100 with a little over a minute remaining.
Chris Paul would then force a turnover from East G
Gilbert Arenas but was swatted by Howard at the other end. On the following inbounds play,
Kevin Durant would slice the East lead to 5 points with 43.7 seconds left. The West were once again proficient on the other end, forcing James into a tough shot but watched on as Chara missed a wide open three with the shot clock winding down.
Chris Bosh went to the free throw line with 12.3 seconds left to seal the game with two free throws, extending the East’s lead to 7, the score 109-102.
Chara finished with a team leading 21 points from off the bench. The forward watched on as LeBron James received All-Star MVP honours and was seen saying something to team mate Kobe Bryant. Bryant later revealing Chara had said one word, “Overrated.” Bryant finished with 17 points, 5 assists, Kevin Durant added 14 points, while Chris Paul kept his side in the game as he put up 11 points and 17 assists.
James produced 35 for the East, Howard added 14, and Sixers F
Andre Iguodala scored 13. Gilbert Arenas and Chris Bosh each had 7, while debutants
Barney Steele and
Jay Gray had 6 apiece.
Notes: The Western Conference’s
Monta Ellis and
Joe Johnson were the only players not to score during the game… After the game, LeBron James weighed into the debate about Team USA teammate
Carmelo Anthony’s snub from the Western Conference team, “I’m saddened that Melo did not get to play. Chauncey was here but Melo wasn’t. Chauncey is a great player but Melo deserved to be here ahead of him. I’m not saying take Billups off that team, they play different positions. Melo deserved to be here instead of some of the guys.” The Denver Nuggets are currently in third place for the Western Conference and Anthony is averaging a team leading 23 ppg… Last year’s All-Star MVP
Yao Ming had a quiet game, finishing with 10 points and 5 rebounds. The Chinese C later stated, “It was good to have a break. Houston is not doing so well so it’s nice for a break”…
Allen Iverson , who started and made his 11th All-Star appearance, was not happy after the game due to lack of playing time. “I’m not a sub, I felt disrespected. I was voted in to play not to sit on the bench”…
