VSync timing issue found with release points

Postby Patr1ck on Fri Jun 17, 2011 5:17 pm

I found a strange issue with Vsync being on or off relating to the timing of shots. I've had it off for the majority of time since the game's release, and always ended up tweaking my sliders since I felt they were either too high or too low as the percentages were just not consistent. Over the last couple of games the shot percentage for both teams was quite consistent. Then I played the Atlanta Hawks. Both teams shot 60% from the field. It was ridiculous. Just about every jumper knocked down in every defender's face.

I took it as just one of those occurrences, and today I decided to turn Vsync on while playing against the Spurs. Wow, neither team could hit anything. Very low scoring game, but it seemed consistent. All my shot release timing had changed. The same timing that was good before, was now coming up late or early and many of my freethrows and jumpshots were not close to going in. Sometime in the second half I decided to turn VSync off. All of a sudden, everybody on both teams were knocking down their jumpers and freethrows. The timing seemed to have come back. However, it has always been inconsistent

This is the same issue that caused airballed layups in 2K9 with Vsync off. The calculation for shot timing variates based on your frames per second, or whether they are synced to the refresh rate. I guess this is the old input lag issue and may have nothing to do with VSync, but pre-rendered frames.

Anybody else notice this?

Is your frame rate above 60fps without vsync on?

It's below 60 on each setting. 40-50.

Then it's not worth using Vsync. You only want to use it if you're above the refresh rate and getting tearing.

It's plausible that a crappy engine could be hurt by the renderer trying to cope with forced Vsync above the framerate.

I'm going to do a couple experiments today. Turn flip queue(render frames ahead) to 0, then try lowering my resolution until I can get 60. It's just odd how inconsistent it was with vsync off, even though I was seeing good releases on my feedback, while with vsync on, shooting percentages were low but consistent.

Worst thing about it is how inconsistent the frame rate is every time I run it. I've even seen it play different when I run it through steam.

That is something that definitely needs to be addressed before the next game's release. Pdub are you using SST or Real FG %. Does this problem apply to both SST and Real FG %.

I don't care to use real fg% as i like to control my shot release, and I don't think it would.
The results I have concluded with are that Vsync should be turned off, no matter whether the framerate is higher or lower than the displays refresh rate. Completely different release timings and shot results when it is turned on. Very inconsistent shot results even with good/green shot feedback. Or...turn Vsync on and increase shooting sliders. Whatever.

Well I never tried turning the shooting sliders up while v sync is on, but I am happy with it being off. What do you use? On or off? Try the opposite and see if you notice anything.

im using mine on,sometimes i see what you said wherein if your shot is perfect release it still doesn't go in,but i'll try mine with vsync turned off for a while and try to see if there will be a difference
