Talk about NBA 2K11 here.

Game Freeze

Game Freeze.. when you're game, nba 2k11 suddenly freezes ( i can't press alt+tab, ctrl+alt+del, alt+f4 etc) do you think it is a hardware issue?

My specs are i5 750,
palit gts 250 512mb,
2gb ram and
a i-don't-know-what-type-but-it-runs-everything-well-anyways PSU.

I hate to think its all the patches i've installed because i made a fresh install and just put kova's rosters.

Can you trying downloading game demos of newer games? Its difficult to troubleshoot if you are not going to have variables right?

Laptop sucks dude.

AMD athlon 64 1.6Ghz
2GB ram
Ati Radeon HD 3200

It's really fine. It's not lagging. Or I'm just used to it.?:D

And, no freezes before even pre-patch. About RA3? No freezes too. I just can't configure the damn resolution.

whats your PSU? Is it generic (came with your case)? freezing can be a symptom of a bad/insufficient PSU. It could also be driver problems..Did you have a different video card prior to the GTS 250? Have you installed a new driver recently? If so, did you use driversweeper to properly uninstall the old driver?

My old PC had an e8400 (so your i5 750 is faster), a GTX 260 (so your GTS 250 is a tad slower) and 4Gb of RAM but it was freeze/stutter free..if your game was stuttering then I would say it could be the lack of RAM..but as its freezing/PC lock up, I suspect its either insufficient PSU or a bad driver install

I suggest try two other demos and see if they freeze too.

yep, i have a generic PSU. I reinstalled the old drivers and I got through a game, 10 minute quarters in assoc mode. what i did though is reduce the resolution and run it on window mode. but it stutters just a bit but manageable.

I didn't have a video card before this, this is the same system i bought from a year ago and haven't changed a thing.

thanks for that link. by the way, what is your gpu, psu and ram combo? hopefully it won't be out of budget. or can you suggest a combo that won't exceed probably PHP 10,000? i can still salvage the video card for a few bucks i think so maybe i can add. this is the only game i play so i don't need the super high end cards i believe.

your videocard should be more than enough for NBA 2k11, Like I said, its just a tad slower than my old GTX 260 and it could handle NBA 2k11 just fine :)

I would suggest you get a decent PSU and add 2 more gigs of RAM. For the PSU, unless you plan on SLI or crossfire, I suggest any decent 600W PSU will suffice. Not sure how much an OCZ StealthXstream 600w costs now but thats a decent budget class PSU that could last till say you want to upgrade to a GTX 500 series card, it was able to power the rig on my signature but I just had to replace it because I felt like replacing it (lol)

i don't even know how SLI and crossfire works. lol.

okay, thanks for the advice. I was thinking of adding ram too anyways so I guess, PHP 10,000 would be a pretty cool budget for ram and PSU. I'll look for that brand you suggested. the only other brand i know is hec cougar or raptor series.

i'll upgrade the video card sometime in the future.

these should be decent and would be able to power your system even if say you upgrade to a GTX 560ti :)

₱2,900.00
http://www.pcx.com.ph/index.php/compone ... -500w.html

408W/34A on the 12v rail
₱4,450.00
http://www.pcx.com.ph/index.php/compone ... -550w.html
492W/41A on the 12v rail

a typical Core i5 750 based system would need

Core i5 750 = 95W ~8A
GTS 250 = 150W ~12.5A
the rest of your system probably eats another 100W ~ 9A

So in 100% CPU and GPU usage scenario (rare to happen but worst case scenario) your system uses about 345W or 28Amps on the 12V..Of course you dont want a PSU that has little headroom but if short on budget I say the Silverstone Essentials will be up t the task even if you replace your GPU later with say a GTX 560ti (which AFAIK uses about 180W)

oh and please avoid trendonic psu lol

i don't know if those brands you mentioned are available here in pampanga. i know pcx has a branch here but it's about an hour of commute away.

but these ones are relatively cheap and near me. i just don't know about the brand.

HUNTKEY HK700-52PP 700W PSU ... 2,735
or
HUNTKEY V POWER 550W ... 2,120

I cannot find information about the HK700 but the V POWER 550 is supposed to have 33A on the 12v

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=205763

The review isnt good though

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/ ... view/754/9

Introduction

If you follow closely our power supply reviews you know that all power supplies from Huntkey Green Star series explode if you try to pull its labeled power (we tested the 350 W, 400 W, 450 W and 550 W models – all exploded, see the reviews to watch the videos from them exploding). Today we tested another model from this same brand: V-Power 550 W. Is it a good power supply or will it have the same fate as its sisters?

Conclusions

Huntkey V-Power 550 W is a Green Star 550 W with a different label and a slightly different cable configuration. And that’s it. This explains why V-Power 550 W and Green Star 550 W have the same model number (LW-6550SG).

Like all members from Green Star family, V-Power 550 W burns if you try to pull its labeled power continuously at a room temperature around 45º C.

It was really ridiculous to see Huntkey saying to us that V-Power 550 W and Green Star 550 W were different products.

If you are looking for a true 550 W power supply don’t buy this product. Take a look at the list of power supplies we already tested and that got an award seal for choosing a good product that won’t explode or damage your equipment.

Keep in mind that this problem seems to be specific with the Green Star and V-Power products, as we reviewed Huntkey Titan 650 W (first version of Rocketfish 700 W, RF700WPS, the current version RF700WPS2 is manufactured by CWT) and it didn’t explode.

Just check for reviews before you purchase (places Id check for review would be Jonnyguru and hardwaresecrets), some PSUs may be from a known brand but a particular model/series is unreliable..case in point is the Coolermaster Extreme power which had bad reviews from hardwaresecrets. This is because PSUs of same brand may have different OEM/Manufacturers (ex: a Corsair HX 750 is done by CWT but the HX 650 is done by Seasonic)

You dont need to spend an arm and leg for a PSU, but do assess your future upgrade plans and buy a PSU with that in mind so when the time comes that you need to upgrade, you dont need to spend for a new PSU

I went from a GTX 260 to a GTX 570, but if were only NBA 2k11 that I played, I would not have upgraded as the GTX 260 was more than enough :) Imagine at 1920x1080,32xAA, 16xAF and highest in game settings vsync ON, the GTX 570 only gets around 30% GPU usage

Do you have a USB keyboard? The gameplay doesn't actually freeze, but does go unresponsive, and often in menus so it will seem frozen. It also won't allow you to use conventional methods to get back to the desktop, the keyboard is totally unresponsive.

The solution is to get a PS2 keyboard or take out/reconnect your keyboard from the USB socket each time it occurs.
