OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced that the team has signed guard Eiji Sawakita, who will be the third Japanese-born player to take stage in the NBA.
Sawakita, 20, played for the Sannoh Industry Affiliated High School basketball team and shined. Sannoh has been the defending national champion for three years running and they are considered the top high school team in Japan, before Eiji decided to go overseas to pursue his dream, he led Sannoh to consecutive titles and became a fan favorite.
"Eiji is I think the best all-round player in Japanese high school basketball. His offensive ability is nearly unstoppable and is equally matched by his defensive ability, he must show his skills here in the NBA." Sam Presti said.
The Japanese kid averaged 22.4 points per game in his whole career on the team, dished 4.3 assists and recorded 2 steals per game. Reports also said that the Thunder waived guard Royal Ivey to make way for Eiji, roster stands now at 15.
