Play-Calling Controls and Execution (360)

Postby Breems on Tue Dec 14, 2010 2:22 pm

Well, it's near Christmas time, so I decided as a casual gamer who loves basketball to go for the highly-praised NBA 2K11.

I've been a Live fan in the past, but haven't really played anything past NBA 2K7 and NBA Live 06, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I just bought an Xbox 360 and added NBA Live 10 to my arsenal. I found it a bit disappointing in terms of gameplay (disjointed animations and movements and terrible ball physics), but I found the play-calling to be excellent. The animation in the playbook that shows you how to run the play is great, as well as the on-court graphics that give you hints on where to stand, pass, drive, and so forth.

How does play-calling in NBA 2K11 work? For example, in Live 10 on the 360, you hold LB and then select the play.

Also, how well do the plays execute and are there on-court graphics assisting you, as well as animations in the playbook section of the menu? I realize neither franchise wants to copy each other completely, so I'd like to hear the differences.

I've searched a lot for this on Google and have watched videos of gameplay on YouTube, but surprisingly have found very limited information for such a popular game. Anyway, thanks in advance!

well here is tons of information on playcalling alone
http://community.2ksports.com/community ... 34616&l=11

Basically you dribble up the court, tap LB, tap the icon associated with what player you want to run the play for. 4 plays will pop up to choose. It tells you where to position the player you are controlling, who to pass to by tapping A (you can still direct pass if you want), where screens are coming from and where cuts are being made.

The AI teammates do a good job of realizing if their defender is cheating on screens and will change their routes accordingly. I NEVER used play calling before this year and have been really impressed by the AI changes and how quick you can get a play off and finished. I can usually get 2 full plays in before the 24 second clock is filled.

As that insight says, it is all based on the real teams and as a Celtics fan I do love seeing the same plays for Ray Allen that I see in the game.

Basically I love the play calling and haven't had any issues with it this year.

If you want to see some videos of the play calling check out the "Ten Teams in Ten Days" series.
Opinions are my own.

Thanks JaoSming!

So you must select the plays through individual players basically? Sounded a bit disappointing at first, but that actually makes the most sense and is pretty much how Live play-calling functioned in the 10th installment. 2K's method also allocates room to fit in more plays in-game, I guess.

Thanks for including that tidbit on AI players rerouting, as I heavily utilize early options and variations in plays. I didn't use any playbooks much either until NBA Live 10. Until recently, I just enjoyed dunking and shooting shots from the perimeter, but as I've grown older, I've found it more fun to watch players come off screens and hit them for an open 12 footer.

Thanks for the link and video suggestion, not sure how I missed them, lol.

Anyone else feel free to post your opinion on the subject!
