NBA 2k11 Unstable FPS

Postby SkyLine03LT on Sat May 14, 2011 3:39 am

Recently I've encountered this problem. It's not a huge deal but it can be quite annoying, as you can get the impression that the game is lagging. The reason for that is that now it goes from 85fps to 130fps depending on camera position etc. It used to be stuck on 90fps before. It's not really laggy, but the ~50fps difference makes it look like it is.

I noticed that it started after I messed around in the NVidia control panel forcing higher graphics for 2k11. Note that this only happens when I'm using broadcast camera, 2k camera seems to be working fine. Just for the record, I'm not willing to stop using broadcast camera. Another thing that's wrong since then is that when I play online and low graphics are forced, frames don't seem to refresh normal and I often get distorted view.

I tried resetting the NVidia control panel settings to default but it had no effect, I also tried reinstalling (well, actually updating, as it was a slightly newer version) the video drivers, performing a 'clean install' (wipes out all the settings), but..... I think you can guess :D

For those that don't believe my PC can handle 2k11 here are my specs:

NVidia GeForce 250GTS 1GB DDR3 RAM GPU
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @3.2GHz (not OC'ed) CPU Black Edition
4GB Corsair Dual Channel 1333 RAM
Asus Crosshair IV Formula motherboard
Corsair 650W PSU
Windows XP SP3

Because of such big difference, you can clearly see the difference: It's real smooth with 130 and noticeably "laggy" at 85. Coz of difference. If it were locked at 90 like before, no such thing would be noticeable.

Let me get this right. You want more than 60FPS? I don't understand why considering the human eye can't tell much of a difference beyond 60 frames per second. I wish I had your problem. I'm fighting to get a stable 50FPS.

The human eye can see more than 60 fps. If you are playing a game at 120 fps and it suddenly drops to 60, you still notice the difference. Of course, we see by motion, not sequential images, but 60 fps is reasonably smooth for video games.

On that note, I would like display technology to move beyond sequential frames or images and display motion the way the human eye perceives it.

Impossible! that's like asking for the perfect basketball video game!

...Our eyes can indeed perceive well over 200 frames per second from a simple little display device (mainly so low because of current hardware, not our own limits)...

It used to be, well, anything over 30 FPS is too much. Then, for a while it was, anything over 60 is sufficient. After even more new video cards, it became 72 FPS. Now, new monitors, new display types like organic LEDS, and FPDs offer to raise the bar even higher. Current LCD monitors response rates are nearing the microsecond barrier, much better than millisecond, and equating to even more FPS.

If this old United States Air Force study is any clue to you, we've only scratched the surface in not only knowing our FPS limits, and coming up with hardware that can match, or even approach them.

The USAF, in testing their pilots for visual response time, used a simple test to see if the pilots could distinguish small changes in light. In their experiment a picture of an aircraft was flashed on a screen in a dark room at 1/220th of a second. Pilots were consistently able to "see" the afterimage as well as identify the aircraft. This simple and specific situation not only proves the ability to percieve 1 image within 1/220 of a second, but the ability to interpret higher FPS.

Oh, wow. My system is definitely not capable of running near 72FPS.

a stable 60 fps will feel much smoother than higher but irregular fps :) I too turn on vsync since I cant tell the difference in smoothness between 60fps and higher
