you could attempt hex editing the roster file (make sure you fix the checksum after
viewtopic.php?f=138&t=81502 ) but there is no easy free way to do it.

There is an easy free way. I've done it with Reditor v1 . Just go to the bank of names tab in REDitor (not sure if its in vII I use v1.1 still) go to the search bar and search for the *Team Name* and replace it.
i.e. houston rockets
search for rockets, replace all entries with the word "Rockets" with your new team name. Lets use "Rachets". save the roster and the game will now show Houston Rachets... it will still call them rockets though
*note when replacing the data in the name bank you have it can be tricky because the total of of the length column must be the same before you can save the file.
so if you want to replace "Rockets" which has 7 characters with "Dogs" which has 4 characters, you will need to add 3 characters to another slot. What I do is add 3 *** to the slots with stars and then save.

Does this need the registered version?

You can use REDitor to change the names of players, colleges, arenas, and team names as long as you actually pay for it. The free version just lets you change the name of players.

trust me all can be done using the free version you just have to figure it out. That's what i do. I use only free tools and work until I get the desired results
