Your favourite covers?

Postby J@3 on Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:49 am

At the risk of this thread being flooded by Orgy posts, I'm interested in what covers people like. Here's some of mine...

Atreyu - You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi cover)

Bullet For My Valentine - No Easy Way Out (Robert Tepper cover, Rocky IV soundtrack FTW)

Trivium - Master Of Puppets (Metallica cover)

Evergreen Terrace - Mad World (Tears for Fears cover)

Metallica - Die, Die My Darling (Misfits cover)

AFI - Rio (Duran Duran cover)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN cover)

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes - Annie's Song (John Denver)

Iced Earth - Highway To Hell (AC/DC cover)

Not to mention the 50 billion covers of Last Caress (originally by the Misfits, covered by AFI, Metallica, NOFX etc)

I don't really know of that many covers, but I seem to like the Alien Ant Farm's cover for Michael Jackson's song Smooth Criminal.

The No Easy Way Out cover by BFMV is good too, but it doesn't beat the original. Survivor has also made a cover from that song if I'm not mistaken.

Covers I like:

- Foo Fighters - Danny Says (originally by The Ramones)
- Foo Fighters - Life of Illusion (John Welsh)
- Foo Fighters - Sister Europe (The Psychedelic Furs)
- Foo Fighters - Born on a Bayou (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
- Keane - Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie)
- Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie)
- Nirvana - Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam (The Vaselines)
- The Proclaimers - Get Ready (The Temptations)
- Marylin Manson - Tainted Love (Soft Cell)
- Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell)
- Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes (Carl Perkins)
- Elvis Presley - Hound Dog (Big Mama Thornton)
- Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (The Funk Brothers)
- Creedence Clearwater Revival - Good Golly Miss Molly (Little Richard)
- Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Put a Spell on You (Screamin Jay Hawkins)
- Creedence Clearwater Revival - Susie Q (Dale Hawkins)
- Lenny Kravitz - American Woman (The Guess Who)
- Aerosmith - Come Together (The Beatles)
- Santana - Black Magic Woman (Fleetwood Mac)
- The Doors - Alabama Song (Kurt Weill)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Fire (Jimi Hendrix)
- Cake - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
- Guns & Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan)
- Pearl Jam - Love, Reigh O'er Me (The Who; although Vedder's voice ruins it, the instrumentals are awesome)
- The Beatles - Twist & Shout (The Topnotes)
- The Beatles - Roll Over Beethoven (Chuck Berry)
- AC/DC - School Days (Chuck Berry)
- AC/DC - Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry)
- John Lennon - Stand by Me (Ben King)
- Jerry Lee Lewis - Sweet Little Sixteen (Chuck Berry)
- José Feliciano - Light My Fire (Only good Doors cover)
- José Feliciano - Billie Jean (Michael Jackson; amazing cover, on guitar)
- Dave Grohl - Tiny Dancer (Elton John)

Some awfully obvious ones there but whatever.

Cover songs I hate (and think the bands/artists covering them should die):

- Paramore - My Hero (Foo Fighters; this should be illegal or something)
- My Chemical Romance - Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie; read above)
- Will Young - Light My Fire (The Doors - FOR GOD'S SAKE, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU COVER A DOORS SONG?!?!?)
- Snoop Dogg - Riders on the Storm (The Doors - read above; in my opinion the worst cover on this planet, but the fact that it's my favorite Doors song may have something to do with that)
- Jessica Simpson - These Boots Are Made for Walkin' (Frank Sinatra; Oh God, my ears! Although I rather "teach her a lesson" than have her die :cheeky:)
- Another Brick in the Wall - Korn (Pink Floyd)
- Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams Are Made of This (Eurythmics)
- I don't know if it counts but I really hate that remix they did of Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation"
- G4 - Bohemian Rhapsody
- Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
- Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O'Mine (Guns & Roses)
- Greenday - I Fought The Law (The Clash)

Isn't that Snoop Dogg cover supposed to be titled Riders Of The Storm?

I don't know why my friends like that song. It is terrible when Snoop's singing it.

Nah, it's "Riders on the Storm". Snoop Dogg's cover is the perfect example of why post-90's rap/hip-hop sucks huge, hairy balls and is nothing more than a pathetic way of making money.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN cover)

I agree, it's a great cover....very powerful & moving rendition by Cash....I've got that CD....don't mind the One cover too, but probably prefer Hurt cover more....

Chino's mournful wail strangely makes this cover great to me.

The Deftones also did a great Sade cover featuring Jonah from Far/Onlinedrawing, but I forgot the name of the song...it's one of the most famous ones.
Also, they did a Duran Duran cover, "The Chauffeur", which is pretty good.

I have a huge man-crush on Chris but his cover of Billie Jean just doesn't do it for me... Check out José Feliciano's version of the song. Crazy what that guy can do with a guitar.

Maybe it's just me, or their live version of the song (WrestleMania X8), doesn't sound as clear.

You can find the recorded studio version in the internets.
