2007-08 Summary

November 2007:

East Player of the Month: LeBron James; East Rookie: Al Horford
West Player of the Month: Dirk Nowitzki; West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record: 7-8
Home: 5-3
Road: 2-5

Southeast:

Washington: 11-5
Orlando 9-9
Atlanta 7-8
Charlotte 6-8
Miami 6-9

The Hawks finished the month of November with an average record of 7-8. After starting the season 1-4, and suffering a 39 point loss at the hands of the Celtics, Atlanta turned it around with a 3 game winning streak. Highlights of the month were defeating the defending champion Spurs, and narrowly edging the Bulls in Chicago. Finishing the month with a win against the Hornets, the Hawks sat at ninth place, a half game behind the 9-9 Magic for the final playoff spot and 16th on the NBA.com power rankings. Additionally, Al Horford won Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month with averages of 11.1 Points and 7.4 Rebounds on 52% shooting.

---------------------------------------------

December 2007:

East Player of the Month: LeBron James; East Rookie: Al Horford
West Player of the Month: Kobe Bryant: West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record: 6-8 (13-16 overall)
Home: 4-5 (9-8)
Road: 2-3 (4-8)

Southeast:

Washington: 17-11
Orlando: 17-16
Miami: 15-16
Atlanta: 13-16
Charlotte 11-18

After starting the month with a loss, the Hawks went on a three game winning streak to get over the.500 mark for the first time with a record of 10-9. During that brief streak, Joe Johnson reached a career high in points with 59 in a win against the Timberwolves. A blowout in Orlando; followed by a heartbreaker against the Raptors kept the Hawks under .500 for the rest of the month; the ugliest moment being a 33 point home loss versus Utah. The Hawks finished 13-16, being 12th in the East and 1.5 games behind the Sixers for the 8th seed. They sat at 17th in the Power Rankings. Al Horford won East Rookie of the Month again.

Transactions:

GSW trades Patrick O’Bryant and Troy Hudson to MIL for Dan Gadzuric.
MIA trades Udonis Haslem to CHA for Gerald Wallace.

---------------------------------------------

January 2008:

East Player of the Month: Ray Allen; East Rookie: Thaddeus Young
West Player of the Month: Kobe Bryant; West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record: 6-8 (19-24 overall)
Home: 2-3 (11-11)
Road: 4-5 (8-13)

Southeast:

Washington: 30-14
Orlando: 27-22
Miami: 25-20
Atlanta: 19-24
Charlotte: 17-28

The Hawks started the month with a pair of blowout wins on the road, before suffering 3 consecutive losses. They won 4 of their last 9 to hold a 19-24 record. They sat in 11th place, two games behind the 8th place Pacers, and 18th on the Power Rankings. The rookie race heated up in the month, after Al Horford’s Hawks defeated ROY frontrunner Kevin Durant’s Sonics. However, Horford did not win East Rookie of the Month for the first time this season, losing to Thaddeus Young. The playoffs are not out of question for the Hawks; who hold the longest playoff drought in the NBA. (9 seasons)

Transactions:

NYK trades Jerome James (lol) to PHX for Sean Marks and Brian Skinner.

---------------------------------------------

February 2008:

East Player of the Month: LeBron James; East Rookie: Thaddeus Young
West Player of the Month: Kobe Bryant; West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record: 5-9 (24-33 overall)
Home: 4-3 (15-14)
Road: 1-6 (9-19)

Southeast:

Washington: 34-24
Miami: 33-24
Orlando: 34-28
Atlanta: 24-33
Charlotte 23-34

The Hawks started the month off 3-1, before suffering a 5 game skid; their longest of the season, which was ended with a narrow win in Golden State. The Hawks continued to slide a bit, and finished the month with a 24-33 record, good for 10th in the East. They stood 3 games behind the 8th place Pacers, and were ranked 17th in the Power Rankings. Playoffs still a possibility, but are continually out of reach.

Transactions

IND trades Marquis Daniels to MIA for Daequan Cook and Mark Blount
PHX trades Jerome James for Travis Diener and Jeff Foster
DET trades Rodney Stuckey to NJN for Bostjan Nachbar
TOR trades Chris Bosh and Rasho Nesterovic to NJN for Richard Jefferson (wtf)

---------------------------------------------

All-Star Weekend:

Al Horford in Rookie Challenge:

Al Horford: 29 Minutes, 11 Points, 13 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 5-8 FG
Rookies win 121-110
MVP: Kevin Durant (32 Points, 7 Rebounds)

Josh Smith in Dunk Contest:

Round 1: Josh Smith vs. LeBron James vs. Trevor Ariza vs. Thaddeus Young
(28, 50: 78); (41, 39: 80); (50, 40: 90); (50, 35: 85)
Round 2: Ariza vs. Young
(32, 42: 74) (31, 37: 68)
Champion: Thaddeus Young

Joe Johnson in 3pt Shootout:

Round 2: 1. Arenas (21); 2. Bryant (19)
Champion: Gilbert Arenas

Joe Johnson All-Star Reserve:

Joe Johnson: 20 Minutes; 11 Points, 5 Assists, 4 Rebounds, 4-9 FG, 3-4 FT
East Wins 154-148
MVP: Gilbert Arenas (36 Points, 9 Assists, 4 Steals, 4 Rebounds)

---------------------------------------------

March 2008:

East Player of the Month: Dwyane Wade; East Rookie: Thaddeus Young
West Player of the Month: Amare Stoudemire; West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record: 5-12 (29-45 overall)
Home: 3-5 (18-19)
Road: 2-7 (11-26)

Southeast:

X-Miami: 45-29
X-Orlando: 42-34
X-Washington: 41-33
Charlotte: 32-42
Atlanta: 29-45

The Hawks season fell apart in the month of March. Posting a pathetic record of 5-12, the only high point of the month was a thrilling 106-104 OT win against the Clippers. Sitting 6 games behind the 8th place Pacers, Playoffs are all but out of question for the 29-45 Hawks. Atlanta stands at 22nd in the Power Rankings. With the Suns owning the Hawks draft pick, they will likely continue to finish the season playing hard

---------------------------------------------

April 2008:

East Player of the Month: Ray Allen; East Rookie: Thaddeus Young
West Player of the Month: Chris Paul; West Rookie: Kevin Durant

Record 4-4 (33-49 overall)
Home: 2-2 (20-21)
Road: 2-2 (13-28)

Southeast:

XD-Miami: 50-32
X-Washington: 46-36
X-Orlando: 45-37
O-Charlotte: 35-47
O-Atlanta: 33-49

The Hawks finished the season on a relatively high note. Despite missing the playoffs with a record of 33-49, they won the final two games of their season, upsetting the Cavaliers and Heat. Atlanta finished 12th in the East and 20th in the NBA.com Power Rankings. Will there be some changes in Atlanta soon?

2008 NBA Champs: Image
2008 Finals MVP: Image (23.3 PPG, 9.8 RPG)

After losing Game 1, Finals Carlos Boozer and the Utah Jazz won 3 straight. The Celtics narrowly edged out Utah in Game 5, but behind Boozer's 34 Points, and Deron Williams's 18 point, 15 assist performance, the Jazz took Game 6 and the series. Boozer and the Jazz managed to pull off something that could never be done in the Stockton/Malone era: win a championship.

Thanks for the praise; I simmed the whole season (I intervened a couple of very close games, but thats about it) since in real life the season is almost over, and though I found it screws up the rosters a bit, it makes things more interesting.

As far as the offseason goes... you'll see.

Hawks Front Office

Chapter 1: The Sacking of Billy Knight

"Y-Yes...? You wanted to see me, Mr. Johnston...?

"Yes. Sit down Mr. Knight. We have been very patient with you, but it has been four years. What do we have to show for it? A 33 win team? This was going to be the year. You told me it was. You said we would make the playoffs. There was no excuse. Phoenix had our pick, we had the team. What gives, Billy?", scolded Hawks owner Larry Johnston.

"Well, these things take time. Jumping the gun by signing a bunch of big contracts just to get swept in the first round is a better alternative? I'm just trying to rebuild without creating a Knicks-type atmosphere", replied Hawks GM Billy Knight

"Then what do you call Speedy Claxton? This just isn't working Bill. We go through this every year. I've had enough. You just aren't getting it done. I'm sorry Billy, but-"

"Wait! Just give me another year! I can get us to the playoffs," pleaded Knight.

"-your fired"

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

"Get a hold of yourself man! Don't make me call security," Johnston threatened.

"Well who will you get to replace me, huh?"

"Naturally, our assistant GM, Liam Washburn. Now please, get out of my site Bill."

"Washburn eh... He'll pay for this!," thought Knight as he stalked out of the building.

-------------------------------------------

At the Washburn manor...

"Washburn- oh hey Larry," Liam said as he picked up the phone.

"I was wondering if you were interested in... you know... being promoted to the GM position."

"Are you serious? I'm not getting served? Yeah! Of course!"

"Great. Come to my office later today and we'll discuss contracts and such."

"Definitely," Washburn said, hanging up.

"General Manager of an NBA franchise. Wow... I can't believe it. What will I do first?," wondered Washburn, as he started jogging on an adrenaline high.

Hawks Front Office

Chapter 2: Offseason 2008

It would be difficult for Washburn to improve the team significantly this offseason. Most of the free agents would be too expensive for the Hawks to afford (thanks in part to Speedy Claxton's bloated contract) and the Suns owned their lottery pick.

On draft night, he looked through scouting reports, and was surprised to find Ellery Cochrane a mid-to-late first round projected Center at the 41st pick. Excited, he immediately selected the 20 year old Center.

"Maybe now Al won't have to play the 5..." he thought as he watched the rest of the draft, laughing at the occasional hilarious name. The draft finished with the selection of Darko Stevanovic by Houston, and then he focused his thoughts on the four players whose contracts will be expiring: Josh Smith, Josh Childress, Solomon Jones and Salim Stoudemire.

-----------------------------------------------

"Hello sir. I have put together a few offers for your client to consider."

"Alright. We would like to stay in Atlanta for the long haul. However, we would like to see some more playing time. And a starting position.

"Well, I can guarantee 25 minutes a game, but not a starting position. But here is my best long term offer," Washburn said coolly as he slid a clipboard across a table to the player's agent.

"Hmm... Yeah... Well, due to the market size and the amount of PT you promise, I think we will have to make some adjustments. Okay, how about we drop the length to four years, and add a half million per year.

"I will consider it. Let me talk to our other clients."

-----------------------------------------------

"No Josh. You're great, but we aren't giving you a max contract. The offer stands: 5 years, 40 million."

"Fuck that. 55 million or I'm leaving."

"You can't afford to do that. The absolute highest would be 5 years, 45 million."

"52.5 Million, and a guaranteed starting position,"

"You can have the starting position, but there is no way you are getting 52.5 million."

Two Hours Later...

"I am glad we have come to an agreement Mr. Smith. See you this fall."

-----------------------------------------------

"You want a 30 million dollar contract? The most I had intended to offer was 5 million over three years. Is this a joke?"

"No. This team needs 3pt shooting."

"So for 3 point shooting you want us to invest 5 million a year for the next six years? No. 10 Million over 5 years is my best offer."

"Well then I'll just take my services elsewhere. Lots of teams can use an undersized 2 guard that can shoot the three."

-----------------------------------------------

"Hey! I've been trying to contact you for weeks! Where have you been? We need to discuss a new contract!"

"What? I already joined a team in Europe because I thought I was off the roster."

"Jesus Christ. We had a contract for you."

"You did? Damn it! And its too late now... Well shit. I'm an idiot."

"That you are," mumbled Washburn as he hung up.

-----------------------------------------------

"Thank you so much for this opportunity Mr. Washburn. Believe me, you won't regret it."

"No problem. It would be a shame to waste the rest of your prime."

"Man, a starting job. Thank you so much sir!"

"Of course. See you at training camp."

-----------------------------------------------

"So, Liam. How is the coach search going? Do you have a replacement for Woody?," asked Larry Johnston, the Hawks owner.

"Yeah... but you might not like it. Trust me though, it will work out in the end."

"Well who is it? Skiles? Larry Brown?"

"No... its... me."

lol, these are great, especially the behind the scenes.
Contract negotation is always such a hassle.
I remember one year, I offered Josh Childress the midlevel exception (a generous offer IMO) ,
but he decided to walk away for more money instead :(

EDIT: why is my post dated Friday? I thought today was Thursday ?

Skillmatic, Thanks for reading. The Bosh/RJ trade was retarded. One of the biggest flaws in Live is how dumb the CPU GM's are, as you will see later.

Chino, Thanks for replying. One thing missing from all these uninspired dynasty stories is a villain.

Maree, Thanks for the reply I guess... Fucking Spammers are Ruining This Section...

+deidei+, Post ineligible. The more replies the better though.

Iceman_44, Glad you like. Contract negotiation sucks in this game. Free agency is a mess. The date is Friday because the default timezone is Australian here. Change it to your timezone in your control panel. ;)

Next update should be up today or tomorrow. Keep the comments coming! (Y)

Lets keep this to PM's. I don't want this topic to become a flame war.

I am going on a trip this weekend, so the update is delayed until Sunday or Monday.

Interesting storyline here, I wonder who all those players you either resigned or let go.. I'm guessing you gave Josh Childress a starting job, either Soloman Jones went off to "Europe" and Salim Stoudamire went to take his services else where... Can't Wait for next update!

Note: I was just going to wait on the update, but seeing as I have a little time, I'll post a half-recap.

Hawks Finalize Roster With Magloire and (Craig) Smith

Atlanta, GA - As soon as his regime began, Coach/GM Liam Washburn tinkered with his roster. First, he resigned highflying Swingman Josh Smith to a 5 Year Contract worth just under 48 Million Dollars, then secured sixth man Josh Childress for another 4 years with a 22 million dollar contract. Combo Guard Salim Stoudamire, and now Euroleague player Solomon Jones were not resigned.

The biggest news however, were the new signings. The Hawks first signed former all-star Center Jamaal Magloire to a 2 year contract via the Mid-Level exception. Magloire, who has had little success since his career 2004 season, hopes to revitalize his career in ATL. Additionally, the Hawks got a steal in former Timberwolves guard Craig Smith, signing him to a league minimum contract, and giving the roster 12 players.

Josh Smith will continue to start for the Hawks. Controversially, Magloire will also start, pushing combo forward Marvin Williams to a sixth man role (or seventh, depending on how much time Childress will get). It will most certainly be an interesting year for the Hawks in Atlanta.

Hawks Depth Chart:

C: Magloire/Pachulia/Cochrane (R)
PF: Horford/Williams/C. Smith
SF: J. Smith/Williams/Childress
SG: Johnson/Childress
PG: Bibby/Law/Claxton

Oh. I was wrong about Childress. Magloire? Interesting- we'll see how he turns out. I'd suggest playing Craig Smith as the backup to Magloire though, I'd like to see him get some decent playing time.

Chaser7, Smith will likely have a hard time getting too deep in the rotation. His height may make it difficult to back up Magloire. Granted, Horford is often Magloire's backup.

blackhole, I could say that Smith is a PF, that your post was a waste of internet space itself, that your grammar is poor, and that you don't have a dynasty story but that would be feeding the trolls. Oh wait... shit! I just did.

rl564411, Thanks for following. I hope J-Smoove doesn't become the next Darius Miles.

mandich, I guess resigning Childress was a good move for my fan base. :)

Baha, Solomon Jones..
What a retard :P. Nice pickups.
Craig Smith could help out in the long run, and Magloire takes a WIDE load off of Horford.
