Setting offensive strategies...

I've heard people say that when they watch CPU vs CPU games or even when they just play the CPU it's important to set the CPU's offensive strategy in order to run plays through the teams superstars.
Now, I tried doing this but the plays stay the same. What I mean is that I set up a CPU vs CPU game between the Lakers and Sixers just to see if I could do this.
I switched to the Lakers to run plays through Shaq (I think it was inside triangle 6) and set the other 3 and when I switched to the Sixers to set their plays, they had exactly the same as the Lakers.
I reswitched them but then the Lakers had the same as the Sixers so I'm just assuming it is not possible to set different plays for different teams to run.
Does anyone know anything about this or how it can be done or do both teams just run the same plays.
