AI - Artificial Incompetence?

Postby JohnnyKnoxville on Wed Oct 04, 2006 12:42 am

Just thought I'd share this little gem:

I'm playing a dynasty with the Knicks, simmed most of the first 2 years and am now in year three. Decided to play a full game for the first time (I used to intervene before), and am up against the Kings. After twice taking a big lead only to watch it evaporate because apparently neither Marquis Daniels nor my sophomore SF can finish fast breaks (the count was five wide open layup or dunk attempts either hitting the front of the rim or going out of bounds from the backboard in a single quarter...) I eventually end up with a 2 point lead with 6 seconds to play. The Kings take a timeout, and Steve Kerr rambles on about how they'll "do something they are comfortable with" and "want to get the ball to their go-to-guy" (which would be Ron Artest, who had no problems hitting shots against three defenders all day). Inbound pass to Tyson Chandler (the Kings starting C), who gets the ball just inside the three point line. He starts dribbling, waits til the clock reaches 2 seconds, then takes a step back and takes a three with 2 guys in his face.
While I somehow thought it would surely go in, it did miss and I won by 2. Now, is it just me or would Tyson Chandler be about the last option for such a shot on any given team?

This was just the last in a series of dubious playcalls by the CPU team (on All-Star, JFTR), most prominently the "hold the ball for 20 secs with one player and then rush a shot".

So while I quite enjoy the game so far apart from the glaring bugs discussed in length in other threads, I am wondering if anyone else gets the feeling that the whole issue about the CPU a) "cheating" to keep the game close or win it and b) making amazingly stupid playcalls rather often is still just as bad as in previous versions?

i don't get the CPU cheating as much as in other versions. for me at least, this year i've been able to win by 6-12 points rather often... last year games for me were either a 1-3 point difference or a total blowout....

but the CPU AI is really something.... there are many waaaaaaaaaay too many times when you play tight defense and the CPU somehow doesn't understand it and stops trying to develop a play, regardless of where he is or how much time on the clock is left.

almost once a game i bump a PG near the half court line and he just dribbles the ball in the same place till there are 2 secs left and launches a half court buzzer beater. this doesn't happen only to PGs, it seems as if the CPU AI is not prepared to react to an awful lot of situations and get into the "hold the ball for 20 secs with one player and then rush a shot" mode way too often.

A fix to such a spot would be reset the offense. When in doubt the CPU can get the PG to the top of the key, get the sg and sf to the sides, get the pf and c to each side of the lane, and pass around the perimeter.

EA is spending all its time on marketing features, on freestyle this and ESPN radio updates rather than on game play. All icing and no cake.
