Ive been playing live for a long time now, but missed the 03 and 04 series. (02 wasnt available for PC anyway)
What really got changed from 2000 and 2001 to 2005 was the blocking thing, and I do not like it at all.
While in 2001 almost every shot in the post got blocked and it did always look like goaltending, in 05 and 06 the blocks just look so preassigned.
You do not really need any timing, but can only push the button and your player jumps for the block, almost only possible if your opponent went for the lay-in/dunk.

If you take a look at some blocks (only for those who do not see NBA that often, like me

) you notice that there are so many blocks where the player takes a hook or just a simple shot and gets blocked by the defender because of great timing (jumping even before the shot-attempt, like Ben Wallace´ big block vs Boston)
This is always near to goaltending, but has something to do with skill.
While in live 05/05 (maybe 03/04?) you just push the button and your defender comes from behind, jumps even 2-3 meters which looks really unrealistic and blocks it.
Also these animations are always kinda programmed and have nothin to do with freestyle. (frestlye control everywhere, but not in defense ... )
I know it is hard to make blocking better, but what do you think about blocking in the newer lives and when did it begin to be that programmed and easy ?
So long hov-
