Chapter 15
“Welcome to Minnesota!”
Will Sit and Flo Ruf walked onto the Target Centre floor and shook hands with former Wolves GM Kevin McHale; soon to be Head Coach.
“I’m glad to be here Mr McHale,” Sit replied coolly.
McHale handed Sit a folder and said to him, “I guess General Managing duties are all yours Sit.”
Sit took the folder and smiled, “Thanks and I would like to introduce you to my friend Flo Ruf who will be our new scout.”
“Nice to meet you,” McHale said to Flo.
Flo nodded, “Nice to meet you too sir”
Sit then said to McHale, “So Casey didn’t take his sacking too badly?”
McHale shook his head, “I hope not but its business around here. I wanted to coach this team and he’s done a bad job so it was time to fire him.”
“Good luck then and I’m sure we will keep in touch,” Sit happily exclaimed, “Oh and also, which players wouldn’t you mind cutting?”
McHale thought for a moment, “I would have said that the whole team but Kevin but the way he’s been acting up recently makes me think that the whole team could be expendable.”
Sit nodded and took a note of this in his head, “Well, seems like I got a lot of work to do around here!”
Sit sat in his new office watching a recording of the Timberwolves last game. During that game, Kevin Garnett would be held to single digits and the Wolves would lose by 23 points. On the large screen, Garnett was hit hard as he went up for the bucket and he pulled himself off the floor slowly. Glaring at the ref who was calling the foul on him, Garnett barked something at the official.
The commentator announced to the fans at home, “And Kevin Garnett has been hit with a technical.”
Garnett, on screen, was shaking his head as he walked off the court.
“This is a horrible blow out loss for the Wolves,” The commentator continued, “It’s tough to lose every game in the NBA. The Wolves now drop to six and fourteen.”
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and Sit pointed his remote at the widescreen television and switched it off. Kevin Garnett walked through the door.
“Kevin,” Will said, “I’ve been waiting to see you, take a seat.”
Sit was conducting player interviews as his first job as GM, trying to gauge how his players felt with the team.
“Thank you,” Garnett said as he sat down.
“Kevin, how do you feel about the season so far?” Sit asked him.
Garnett thought for a moment, “It’s going alright although we could be winning a bit more. I mean, I don’t have many years left and I feel that if the Wolves aren’t going to play at their best in my prime, there’s no point in staying.”
Sit was a bit surprised, “You really want to move out of here?”
Garnett shrugged, “Well, if we can’t win, I would rather play with a contender.”
Sit nodded, “I see what you’re saying but the Wolves need you. You’re having another MVP season; do you think you could wait till next year so that we can get help for you?”
Garnett shook his head, “I’m honestly unhappy with the direction of the franchise. I want to win now and during this season. I guess it’s too late to make the playoffs but I think that if we were to have a winning record for the next two months or so, team morale would be a lot higher.”
“So you have a problem with the team because our roster isn’t that deep and that the morale is low?” Sit asked him.
Garnett nodded, “I don’t want to be a pain or anything and I’m not criticising you but I feel that this team could be better than we are. In so long, morale hasn’t been this low.”
Sit smiled, “Don’t worry mate, I will try and do my best. One thing though, what do you think of a trade?”
“A trade wouldn’t be that bad I guess,” Garnett conceded, “Depends where I go.”
Sit nodded and said to him, “Well Kevin, I will see what I can do but I can’t promise that I can trade you out of Minnesota at all. And I don’t want to trade you away because you are the face of our franchise but we will see what the future holds.”
Garnett got up and put his hand out to Sit to shake, “Thank you for talking to me sir.”
Sit shook his hand, “Keep up the good work, you’re doing great.”
As Kevin Garnett left Sit’s office, Sit put his arms behind his head and sat there. He was thinking of places to send his players.
The Wolves players practised on the Target Centre floor as Sit walked past. It was game day and the team was shooting around as some of the players joked with each other playfully. Rookie guard Rashad McCants took a shot from beyond the arc but failed to let the ball go as Michael Olowokandi swatted him from behind. Coach McHale laughed out and pointed at the big man.
“That’s the first shot you’ve blocked in years, do it in the game!”
Garnett was sitting down near the home bench and Sit approached him.
“Big game today hey Kev?” Sit said.
Garnett looked at Sit, “You like talking to your players don’t you?”
Sit laughed, “It’s my job buddy. I have to get to know you guys better.”
Garnett nodded as Wally Szczerbiak walked over and sat down next to Sit.
“Wally, how’s your foot feeling?” Sit asked.
Wally looked down at his foot and responded, “It’s feeling alright. I’m not starting though.”
McHale then yelled out for Sit to talk to him at mid court. Sit got up and strolled up to halfway where McHale and his three assistants were standing in a circle.
“How’s the trade talk going?” McHale asked Sit.
“It’s going fine,” Sit said, “I think I might be able to send Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles.”
“The Clippers, yeah, they need him,” McHale said.
Sit corrected him, “The Lakers actually. I’m trying to get Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm. Might be worth it.”
McHale was sceptical, “No, I don’t think so.”
Sit just smiled and quickly added, “Well, what do you guys think of Ricky Davis?”
McHale yelled, “You’re not trading Garnett for Ricky Davis!”
Sit laughed and quickly waved his hands in front of McHale’s face, “No, no, no - I want to send Wally to the Celtics.”
McHale looked at his assistant coaches who mumbled to each other and before long, McHale turned back to Sit, “We’re interested, we will talk about this more later.”
“Over here!”
“Pass it!”
“Pass the damn ball!”
The crowd was going crazy as the Wolves fell behind for the first time of the night late in the fourth quarter. Garnett was sitting nicely on 32 points while holding Spurs big man Tim Duncan to 13. Trenton Hassell was doing a surprisingly good job on Manu Ginobili while Marko Jaric kept Tony Parker in check. Still, the defending NBA champion Spurs were slowly creeping back behind a 22 point effort from sixth man Nick Van Exel.
McHale looked like he was about to pull his own hair out after Szczerbiak was hit with a technical foul for swearing at the ref. Everyone in the stands stood up to boo as Parker calmly sank a free throw and put the Spurs ahead by three. The Spurs then quickly got the ball back in play, popping it down low into the post to Tim Duncan who used the pivot to get into position for an easy bank off the glass.
“Tim Duncan!” the PA man shouted into the Arena’s PA system.
McHale was prancing up and down the sideline screaming at his players, “Get the ball to Kevin! No, don’t go yourself! Shoot if you’re open!”
Sit sat in his seat, shaking his head. Memories of the Atlanta Hawks came flooding back and he immediately got out of his seat to move down closer to the floor just in time to see what happened next. Garnett was called for a foul after Duncan went up for a shot, kneeing Garnett in the process. It looked like a charge but the ref called a block. The ref blew his whistle, dismissing the Wolves players who were arguing his call. McHale erupted and walked onto the court, pointing at the ref. Sit tried to get to the court but security stood in his way, blocking him from entering onto the court.
McHale was screaming at the ref, “That was a charge, Kevin got hurt.”
The ref seemed to ignore McHale before blowing into his whistle and signalling another technical foul. This time it was McHale’s and the ref signalled for the second official to come onto the court to discuss what was going on. Two of the assistant coaches were finally holding McHale back from doing anything stupid as the crowd began to boo even louder. Garnett, meanwhile, was still sprawled on the floor and getting medical attention from the team doctor. Sit stood at the bottom of some steps, watching helplessly.
The ref then made his decision clear by saying to McHale, “You’ve been ejected, please leave the court right now.”
Two security guards walked onto the court to escort the coach off the floor to boos raining down. Sit finally got past security to join the other assistant coaches on the bench and took a seat.
“This is nasty,” Sit said, shaking his head.
Mark Moore nodded and passed Sit a notepad, “You want to help coach the rest of the team?”
Sit smiled, “Don’t mind if I do!”
“Ok, we’re losing by eight points and there’s still about three minutes left,” Sit told the players, “We can do this guys.”
Garnett was slouched over in his seat as he rested his sore body after being hit forcefully by Tim Duncan. Eddie Griffin didn’t look too interested in what the General Manger had to say.
“What do you know about basketball?” Griffin rudely interrupted.
Sit took a glance at Griffin, “Look, if you’re such a smart ass, why don’t you stop playing and have a smoke?”
Griffin seemed offended and threw his towel on the ground before storming for the change rooms. Sit was a bit shocked as he remembered his time in Atlanta with Al Harrington.
Sit pretended to laugh, “Ok guys, let’s win this game! Wally, Kandi, Troy, Marko and Mark. You guys are on!”
Mark Madsen who was still in his track pants looked surprised, “Me?”
Sit pointed at him, “Show us what you got big guy!”
Madsen stood up to run on court before Moore shouted at him, “Take your track pants off!”
Madsen looked down and ran back towards the bench trying to yank his pants off while running and fell over. The crowd who had seen him laughed as Mark Madsen’s image was quickly put up onto the Jumbotron. Mark Moore hit himself in the forehead and sighed.
Moore looked at Sit, “Why are you sending him on? He’s a spastic.”
Sit shrugged, “I thought we needed someone who could bring some energy out there.”
Moore then sighed even louder, “He’s still a retard.”
Play began once again with Madsen wearing his jersey back to front.
The Wolves made a brilliant attempt of a comeback, getting within a basket of the Spurs before the more experienced Spurs were put back in front, out of reach, thanks to two late treys from Bruce Bowen. The Target Centre crowd started to dwindle as the full time buzzer sounded with the Spurs winners in the 103-98 victory. The Timberwolves trudged into the locker room and quickly got changed before preparing to meet the media throng. Not surprisingly though, there were no beat writers or sports journalists waiting to interview them. Everyone had congregated outside to talk to the ejected Kevin McHale and Eddie Griffin who had walked out on his team. Before the team was allowed to leave, Sit had Mark Moore make everyone stay for his talk to them.
“I’ve talked to all of you this past week,” Sit started, “And I’m happy with how our team is. Thanks you boys for a spirited comeback tonight and hopefully, we can win our next game!”
Sit dismissed the team before walking out to look for McHale. As Sit left through the door of the team’s locker room, a bunch of microphones and tape recorders were shoved into his face. Everyone started to simultaneously ask Sit questions so he asked them to quieten down and ask a question one at a time.
“Will Sit, why did you send Eddie Griffin out of the game tonight?”
Sit was a bit stunned by the question, “I didn’t. He decided to leave himself and I will be dealing with that matter in the near future.”
“Do you feel that Griffin might have a bad relationship with you, much like how Al Harrington didn’t like you in Atlanta?”
Sit laughed, “I don’t want to speculate on anything and I really shouldn’t care. With the Hawks, it was my fault for trying to manage Harrington’s ego. I’m only the GM and my job isn’t to try to manage anyone’s ego.”
“Will there be any trades going down soon as there’s only a few days before the trade deadline?”
“I’m sorry but I can’t tell you guys much. But I can say that there are a few trades I am considering. I’m sorry but I have to be going now as it’s late and everyone needs to get home now.”
Sit retreated for the exit as the flashes of cameras were left behind and Sit. He left the stadium and got into his car. Sit took his mobile phone out of his pocket and rang McHale.
“Hey Kevin, I hope everything is alright,” Sit said to him.
McHale sounded angry on the other end of the line, “You have no idea.”
Sit tried to change the topic, “So these trades I was thinking about. I think we need to discuss them more carefully.”
McHale seemed to agree, “We will talk about it tomorrow at midday in your office. I will get Mark and the other coaches to come.”
Sit told him he would be there and hung up. As he drove his car out of the parking lot to drive to the hotel he was staying in, Sit thought to himself, This team causes one hell of a headache.
