:!: :!: :!: Big liveGMC UPDATE :!: :!: :!:
Authentication works on the site now! If you are a veteran contributor(ie SIT, Heiks, The X, Match 66(Mark), PM me and I will provide your login crudentials. Yeh!<br>

FAQ? That's nice Honor Glow, but what does it mean?
It means that now(well, by this weekend actually), you won't have to wait for me to check my e-mail or check my PMs to get your pstats generated and find out who your Team MVP is.

On my end, this will prevent formatting discrepancies that e-mail attachments seem to be quite common when sending text files to me. I'm so excited as this will now bring a new level of customization to your liveGMC experience in the not so distant(but not so near) future...also this is something I've been wanting to do for at least a year and a half and I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. For those of you who've struggled through a math/logic problem for a long duration, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. :D

Thu Apr 20, 2006 7:16 pm

o_0 can I be a veteran contributor lol

Thu Apr 20, 2006 9:24 pm

Permission Granted...Eddie...I mean Jugs....check your PM.

Thu Apr 20, 2006 9:27 pm

haha lol nice password. I'll go check it out 8-)

Fri Apr 21, 2006 2:01 am

Great update HonorGlow! I hope I will be a veteran contributor in the future

Well, this is all in preparation for '07 so I'll be sending you your login crudentials here soon enough...I see you don't have any current Dynasties being posted...are you still playing Live 06...if this is so, I'll go ahead and issue your login info sooner than later!

:!::!::!: NEWS: GM Pstat loader has been launched (beta v1.0)

Instead of repeating myself, I thought I'd just cut and paste the announcement I sent to "The X"...for vets out there, no more nuisance of e-mail attachments to me!:
Honor Glow wrote:Hey The X! Guess what...well, I know you're still about 7 games away from the end of the season...BUT guess what...Beta version 1.0 of the uploader is ready for you to try at that time! Once you log in (I sent you your login crudentials) it'll give you a link to submit your stats! Finally! After 2 years of waiting for the right time, you can finally upload without my flakiness to hold things back...

...when you finally do upload, please give some feedback as it's still in development mode.

...and I added additional functionality, you can now sign out

:!: I updated many of the first post information, my gosh, after three months some of that stuff can get pretty outdated!

Do I qualify as veteran 04 contributor?

Mon Apr 24, 2006 1:06 am

HonorGlow, yeah I'm still playing Live 06. It is left about 5 games till the end of the season in my Dynasty...

Most definitely! However, I have to tweak some stuff in order for you to submit your 04 stats. Right now it's only for 06. Man, I have to make my code scalable...

Marquis wrote:HonorGlow, yeah I'm still playing Live 06. It is left about 5 games till the end of the season in my Dynasty...

Okay, give me about 10 minutes and you should have a PM with all your login crudentials.

Mon Apr 24, 2006 4:43 pm

Well, I guess now that we can authenticate pstat submissions now, I'm braving new territory and doing something a bit more elaborate now...this was inspired by Micchy Boy giving me his pstat file for his playoff run(Live 2005) and I ended up never using it...I constantly suck at keeping promises.

:!: Introducing: Project Psuedo-Hollinger Playoff Board (or until I can come up with a better name...)
I've been wanting to do this for the longest time, even before John Hollinger became a daily Insider contributor to ESPN but I guess I needed "all the stars to align" I take it if ESPN is forking A LOT of money for his statistical contributions, he must be doing something right and have some credibility...(he's not a mathematical/statistics professor or a former NBA player...basically a former sportswriter from the Northwest USA) As stated in wikipedia:

"Many experts regard the PER as the best all-in-one basketball stat ever developed, though others are still not convinced."

In order for this to work, it requires both the team stat file (tstat) and the player stat file(pstat) in conjunction as Hollinger's formula is quite sophisticated in comparison to NBA's proficiency formula or the Birdie Board formula. Unfortunately, it also seems like I'll be able to get it about 90% of the way there as his multi-part formula requires knowing the opposing teams stats...and unfortunately these stats aren't kept in live 06(Did this exist in '2004? I could have sworn it did.)

Some thoughts:
 No penalties on this board(we'll leave that for the Birdie Board)
 pstat/tstat file only need to be submitted at the end of your playoff run.
 If anybody smart out there can help me figure out/derive estimated pace adjustment without knowing the opposing teams stat info let me know.

I thought that this would be great as a standard playoff run can easily be around 20 games and that's pretty much the length of some of our Dynasty seasons(29 games) In addition, as the playoffs are where the money time is, it just made sense that we dedicated some of liveGMC to it.

So, I'll need all the encouragement I can get during the coding process...I got the preliminary step done tonight by having the server read all the stats in the team stat file...so we're at least stepping forward in the right direction!

:?: Anybody have a better name for the board than the "Psuedo-Hollinger Playoff Board"????

Mon Apr 24, 2006 8:27 pm

Looks like a great idea...gonna send my stuff in when i get to the playoffs...

Tue Apr 25, 2006 12:20 am

sounds good....am looking forward to seeing "The X Playoff Board" j/k

Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:52 am

Don't know if anybody has noticed but I've confirmed that my site is down...apparrently Network problems from my host server which is weird...I hope it's nothing that I've done (aka livedynasty.com whew...)

Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:54 am

Ye man I was just on it an dnot workin

Tue Apr 25, 2006 1:19 pm

Hopefully live 07 is good and you convert all this stuff to live 07, then you'll see me with some pstats submissions

Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:13 am

:!: Rocking, liveGMC.com is back up! Login to your heart's desire!

:arrow:Hollinger Playoff Board(aka The X's downfall board) progress report: I got the server to parse out the non-playoff teams from the real playoffs teams. Not as much progress as I would have hoped but the site didn't get back up until about 10:30pm last night. So, hopefully I can go just a little farther at lunch.

Sun Apr 30, 2006 4:49 pm

:!: New liveGMC.com feature!

So here it is...something I've been wanting to do for some time now...a graphical representation of all your Live 06 submissions for each GM. It's nothing too special now but like in all of my things, there's potential there. This is especially cool for those who've submitted 3 or more stats as they can see their rise or decline submission from submission. Here are some decent examples:

...and of course Yours Truely...

So for those who have already submitted pstats, the link can be located under Team Information on every breakdown page.

...and for those who haven't submitted yet, something to look forward to! Comments, Questions?

wow interesting
I see your's Dynasty Birdie score growth is the fastest
I think you should do the vertical scale step's value smaller than 23, and start to grade from let's say 50 points instead of 0. Hope you understood my point

Thanks for the comment Marquis! Yeh, I'll find out how to do the vertical scale step increase your requesting. Unfortunately from what I gather, will the graphing module I'm using. You have to start at Zero but I'd rather do what you suggested- I think we'd have to start at like 40 as there are some Dynasty teams that have actually gone that low historically.

Hollinger Playoff Project: update
So, we got some progress this morning from liveGMC's core of Software Developers(...um me). If you guys are curious what Hollinger's formula looks like, here's the URL:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/per.html

So, there are these three key variables that have to computed that are derived from the tsat.txt file, factor, VOP(league average value of a possession), and DRDP(league defensive rebound percentage). Here's Honor Glow's from my current 2007 playoff run:

FACTOR: 0.62394032216182
VOP: average value of one possession 1.02729319296038
DRBP: League Defensive Rebound Percentage 0.668154654762762

The VOP for the real life NBA league season is roughly about 1 and DRDP is about 0.7. From what I gather, my league must be a really good offensive rebounding league...or a horrible defensive rebounding one!

Anyway, I'll work on that more this weekend now trying to incorporate the whole formula. PLEASE, again, save your tsat and pstat files once your playoff run is done! I NEED MORE DATA! :D Thanks guys!

Sun May 07, 2006 12:00 pm

Cool stuff man, keep it up. (Y)

Sun May 14, 2006 12:47 pm

After an ice cream run, I'll be continuing working on the Hollinger Playoff project:

Currently, here's Heiks' from his current 2009 playoff run:
FACTOR: 0.601
VOP: average value of one possession 1.027
DRBP: League Defensive Rebound Percentage 0.682

Here's Marquis' from his current 2007 playoff run:
FACTOR: 0.609
VOP: average value of one possession 1.012
DRBP: League Defensive Rebound Percentage 0.684

Compared with Honor Glow's:
FACTOR: 0.623
VOP: average value of one possession 1.027
DRBP: League Defensive Rebound Percentage 0.668

...alright, so I'll be posting in about 2 hours here, hopefully I have something worth posting... ...if anybody can figure out what FACTOR signifies in this formula...I'd be much appreciative!

...update:
It looks like I'm on the last stage of getting some real Hollinger numbers posted here...barring any coding errors that may have occurred but it's looking pretty promising. For the first 10 playoffs submissions, I'll just be posted unadjusted PERs and then after that I should have enough data to go back and do adjusted PERs and a rollout to liveGMC! I'd going to get some semblance of sleep now though...more numbers for you tomorrow!

Mon May 15, 2006 2:17 am

Good job. (Y) I've been watching these formulas a bit, but still can't really understant well. I think factor is a some kind of multiplier..
Looking forward to more of this

Mon May 15, 2006 9:14 am

From www.hornets247.com:
We were going to use John Hollinger's Player Efficiency Rating to pick a winner from this group, but that formula made our brains hurt...

YES, I agree ESPECIALLY if there's a fundamental error in the formula description!...if anybody cares...look at this formula...where the hell is one of the missing opening parentheses?!?!?!?!:

uPER = (1/MP)*
[ 3P
+ (2/3)*AST
+ (2 - factor*(tmAST/tmFG))*FG
+ (FT*0.5*(1 + (1 - (tmAST/tmFG)) + (2/3)*(tmAST/tmFG)))
- VOP*TO
- VOP*DRBP*(FGA - FG)
- VOP*0.44*(0.44 + (0.56*DRBP))*(FTA - FT)
+ VOP*(1 - DRBP)*(TRB - ORB)
+ VOP*DRBP*ORB
+ VOP*STL
+ VOP*DRBP*BLK
- (PF*((lgFT/lgPF) - 0.44*(lgFTA/lgPF)*VOP))) ]

This is something you learn in math 101...the right parentheses should have the SAME amount as the left parentheses...So where is the missing left one!

...I'm glad I don't get paid for this, because I would have clocked out about two hours ago.

Update: After trying to derive the right formula from Google...many sites are just erroneous (basketballreference, wikipedia, schaller tpr)... Hollinger you win, I will by one of your older versions of your books...

... if anybody knows where to find the correct version of this formula, please let me know(please do me a favor and count the parentheses before informing) Project Hollinger...on hold.

Wed May 24, 2006 6:58 pm

Just a little note for myself...judging by the pace of this year's and last year's submissions, I should be able to match last year's submission contributions by July 12, 2006. To reach the 100 submission mark, it's estimated that it'll take until September 9, 2006 to reach that goal...

...let's see if anybody is still playing Live 06 by that date  Chances are they'll be some poor 'ol chap that'll see Live 06 in the discount bin and desire to have a go at it by then :D

So, keep those submissions coming! (provide that you're within the submission window)

:!: Hollinger Update: I finally got somebody to respond to my request for corrections on the formula. This weekend, those who have submitted their playoff stats should see further breakdown on their Hollinger PER.

Fri Jun 02, 2006 1:03 am

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this, Honorius. I'm looking forward to digging back into it a bit with you. :D
