Chapter 5
The rising sun blinded Sit as he woke up to the prodding of his chest. A low voice demanding Sit to wake up drew him away from his sleep. Sit adjusted to the bright light of the early morning sun and he opened his eyes. What he saw certainly shocked him as he scanned what was ahead. Sit was behind the wheel of his and ahead of him, he could see an overturned car. Police swarmed the car ahead, checking it inside and out. Sit tried pinch himself but couldn’t as a lanky police officer with a goatee pull him out of his car. Sit was then turned to face his vehicle and pushed against the passenger door. He felt the cold steel handcuffs slap against his wrists and lock together in a tightening grip. The policeman checked if Sit had anything on him and found his wallet in his back pocket. Pulling it out with one hand, the policeman looked at the drivers’ license carefully.
“Mr William Sit, I suspect that the murder of the man in the other car over there is related to you,” The officer seemingly recited, “You are now under arrest. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say, may and can be used against you in the court of law.”
Sit was then forcefully pulled back from his car and shoved towards a police car. The stronger man pushed Sit into the back of the squad car and accidentally hit him in the head. Unbearable pain rushed through his head as he was thrown onto the seat. Sit struggled to stay awake and he felt colder and colder. A voice shouted out his name. Sit! His whole world turned black as a phone rang.
Sit awoke to the ringing of his home phone. He groaned as he picked up the phone at his bed side.
The clock on his table read 10:34 AM and Sit mumbled into the phone, “Hello.”
“Hey Sit, it’s Albino. Why didn't you pick up before? You going to come down to the office today?”
Sit sat upright and answered, “Yeah, of course. I will come in now. Anything urgent?”
“Not really, we just got some things to do and plus you’re late,” Albino said.
Sit stood up, walked towards the bathroom and picked up his toothbrush to start brushing his teeth, “I will be right there.”
Albino hung up on the other end and Sit continued to get ready for another day at work. His answering machine indicated that there was one new message. Sit pressed the play button and listened to Albino shout his name on the recording. As he put on his suit and got ready to leave, he thought about the dream he had had. That was one weird dream, he thought as he tied up his shoelaces. He walked out of the door, locking it behind him and went outside to find Albino waiting outside.
“You’re here to pick me up Albino? Thanks a lot man, I’m so glad to see you.”
Albino looked at Sit weirdly, “Anything wrong?”
“Just a bad dream,” Sit replied.
Albino started the car up and the drive into the office was quiet apart from when Sit decided to tell Albino about his dream and whether it meant anything. He told Albino about the time where he had seen a horse race in his sleep and saw the number of the winning horse. Sure enough, Sit would go and bet on that horse to win.
“I won two hundred bucks from that,” Sit proudly exclaimed, “Maybe this time, I’m going to be able to cheat my own death or save another guy’s life! What do you think?”
Albino just shrugged, kept on driving and thought to himself, you're a crazy one!
Albino dropped Sit off at the building’s entrance and he said to his friend, “You better go up quickly before you get into trouble.”
Sit nodded and jumped out of the car and ran inside to catch the next lift up to his office. It was a quick ride up to the top floor of the building as Sit wasted no time to get to his office. As he walked briskly past his secretary, she smiled at him and Sit smiled back.
“Will,” She said, “Good luck.”
He was bewildered by her words, “What do you mean?”
“Nothing,” She replied hastily as she picked up a box of documents and left the room.
Sit straightened his tie with one hand before opening his office door. There was a loud thump as Sit dropped his briefcase. There was a familiar man sitting at his desk.
Barry Johnston sat in his chair. At the exact moment Sit saw him, his head started to hurt. He raised his hand to the spot where the searing pain started to burn. Sit’s eyes squinted and he looked up again to see Johnston glaring at him.
“Don’t… what are you doing to me?” Sit stammered as fear started to take control of him.
Sit stood in the doorway shaking and slowly knelt down onto the floor as the unbearable pain took control of him. Sit screamed out in agony as he had both of his hands on the top of his head as if he were trying to summon an evil spirit out of him.
Sit looked up and angrily shouted at Johnston, “What are you doing with me? Stop screwing around with me!”
Sit’s head then started to feel like it was going to explode and he started to hit himself in the head, frantically hoping that the aching sensation he was experiencing would magically disappear. It was still no use as he shook uncontrollably and felt like he had lost all control of his body. Every message he sent to his mind to help him move didn’t receive a response. Sit desperately thought, I must get out of here before he looked up once more.
“What are you laughing at?” Sit asked as he saw Johnston grinning hysterically.
The man pointed down at Sit and Sit looked at his hands. He was shocked to see what he saw and screamed out once again. This time he didn’t scream in pain but it was ion shock and disbelief.
“What’s happening?” Sit started to cry.
Blood was dripping from Sit’s shuddering hands and onto the carpet. Sit willed himself to use all of his might to wipe the blood off of his shirt and looked at his hand again. It was no use as the blood was still there; his hand was drenched in it just like before. He looked at his shirt that was now stained in a very dark red.
Sit looked up again. He couldn’t see if Johnston was still there. Sit’s eyes couldn’t focus as the hurting just became more cutting and his eyelids were too heavy for him to keep open. His body fell helplessly onto the floor in one motion, in one thump.
“William Sit, wake up!”
Albino slapped Sit two more times and noticed that his friend was regaining consciousness. The lawyer had found him lying on the floor and immediately came to his aid. Sit was now lying in his chair with his tie loosened to help him get some air. Sit showed signs of waking up as he opened his eyes and then sat up quickly. He was stiff and looking around; very alert. Albino could tell that something was wrong.
“I saw Johnston,” Sit spluttered out in a hurry, “And I saw…”
Sit seemed to look all over his office, looking for something. He looked down at his shirt and then at his hands crazily and started to rub them together.
“It can’t be…” Sit quivered as his face started to go pale, “There was blood. Albino, there was blood! And my head hurt here!”
He pointed to a spot on his head and stood up to look at the carpet, “There was blood there!”
Albino put his hand out and stated, “Maybe you should sit down. There’s something I’ve got to tell you.”
Sit couldn’t stay calm and looked around as if he were going to see a ghost. All his life he had been scared of the paranormal and this proved that his fear was genuine. Albino tried to sit him down but Sit just stepped away from Albino and bumped into something.
“The guilty conscience of a killer,” A voice from behind him announced.
Sit stepped forward and spun around. A tall man with a goatee stood in the doorway; he wore a dark suit and seemed to invite himself into the room.
“Detective Vincent Thompson,” He proudly stated, “I believe that you, William Sit, are involved in the death of Mr Barry Johnston.”
The news hit Sit hard as he started to realise that all along, it wasn’t a dream. He then stared to ponder, did I kill Mr Johnston?
Vince seemed to have read his mind on the spot and asked him in an intimidating voice, “Were you his murderer?”
Sit broke down, he couldn’t force back his tears as he cried for the man who he thought he had killed and also for the uncertainty that his future provided him.
He shouted out, “I don’t know! I can’t remember!”
Albino seemed to break his own silence and stepped in front of Sit, “My client is clearly traumatised by all of this. Detective Thompson, I request that you leave him alone or I will report your behaviour to the police department.”
Thompson looked at the two of them and laughed, “Sit, you’re a lucky man. I might not get any answers out of you today and due to you not co-operating, I am going to arrest you now.”
Albino wagged his finger in front of the detective, “Don’t forget I’ve secured bail.”
“You’ve broken it, he’s not allowed here.”
Albino shrugged, “He should be allowed to get his belongings from this office. After all, the rest of the Hawks organisation has left the building. The condition to bail was that he wasn’t near any member of the Hawks.”
Vince laughed out even louder, thinking he had found a flaw in the lawyer’s argument, “He’s right next to you. You’re a part of the Hawks.”
“I resigned this morning,” Albino said calmly and coolly picked out a piece of paper from his shirt pocket, “Here’s my letter of confirmation of resignation.”
Vince fumed and stood in an undignified silence, tapping his fingers against his side. He though, Damn lawyer.
“You may have been protected this time Sit,” Vince threatened, “I will get you next time.”
Vince retreated as Albino shouted at him, “There will be no next time. We’re going to court!”
The rest of the day was quiet for Sit as he couldn’t believe what was going on. He gathered the rest of his possessions from his office and left the Hawks’ building for the final time. The letter informing him that he was sacked was in his room and Sit sat on his bed trying to make out the events of the past few days. He learnt that he had been asleep for up to two days and that it was Albino who had secured his bail on the day of his arrest. The media was trying to get a statement from Sit but luckily for him, Albino and his friends hid him from the public eye by tipping off beat writers and news crews incorrectly.
“How are you feeling?” Albino asked in a caring tone.
Sit looked at the clock. It was late but he didn’t seem to feel tired. He also didn’t feel like talking either.
Albino tried to get a response from Sit just to know that he was ok, “Well, the place that you said hurt. That’s where you were hurt in the crash.”
Sit still didn’t twitch a muscle and Albino continued, “The police found both of your cars in the morning. There’s no direct evidence that proves you are guilty. We can still win this case.”
Sit suddenly cried out, “There’s no use. I killed him. I killed Johnston.”
Albino was worried, “What do you mean? Are you absolutely certain?”
Sit seemed to be utterly confused, “I’m not certain but I think I did it. Wait- I don’t know anymore. I can’t remember anything!”
He lay down on the bed and put his head in between his sheet covers and screamed, “I hate this!”
Albino patted him on the back, “Mate, I think you should try to rest a bit. I know it’s hard to grasp. After all, it happened too quickly. Don’t worry, we will find out what really happened.”
“It’s too late now,” Sit said furiously, “He’s dead now and no one knows what actually happened. I’m as good as dead.”
“Innocent till proven guilty.”
“So what?” he challenged the lawyer.
“I quit my job so that we could focus on this case. You have nothing to be afraid of, you didn’t do it!” Albino reasoned.
Sit started punching his pillow and wailed, “I hate myself!”
Albino asked, “What exactly are you scared of Sit?
Sit, for the first time in a long time, thought carefully about an answer.
He stuttered, “I-I don’t know anymore.”
