You basically have to go to the basket a lot more to get free throw attempts. It also helps if you perform more layups than dunks. Try backing down your defender, then when you're just outside the no-charge area (the semi-circle under the basket), tap the direction towards the basket and press shoot. You should perform a layup rather than a dunk, I find that you are fouled much more frequently on these layup attempts. I was able to attempt 18 free throws with Kevin Garnett alone a few games back.
If you beat your defender off the dribble and pull up immediately for a jumpshot, you can sometimes draw a foul as they struggle to catch up and foul you in their attempt to block the shot. You can also, in a limited way, draw contact by dribbling close to your defender (without backing down) and launching a quick jumpshot. Neither of these techniques are as effective as taking the ball to the basket though.
