player shooting styles/form

Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:15 am

don't know if this has been brought up before, but i find it annoying that everybody has the same shot, except some of the big men, who have a ridiculous looking one. they need to make a few different kinds of shooting form that can be assigned to players that shoot relatively that way. Shawn Marion for example shoots from his chest, with mad chicken wing release, so when i see him shooting in live, it just doesnt seem realistic. Same goes with Michael Redd who brings it back well behind his head before letting it fly. Anyone else agree?

Agree with you. They have different shooting styles for the 3 point Shooting contest, so it's not that hard to get into the game, I guess...

Sun Jun 05, 2005 9:20 am

exactly. good point with the three point shootout, even the way they do it there is good, theres a variety of different shots, but not a different one for every player in the league, cuz they dont need to be that precise. only a few stand-out guys (reggie, for example) have their one and only shot in the league.

Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:34 am

a few different shot styles would be nice, it would vary things up

Actually, I've spoken with a producer about this and it's basically a case of being limited by the current technology. Right now, it's not feasible to have as many shooting styles in 5 on 5 play as the three point contest. As I understand it, it might be possible to have four or five distinct styles in regular gameplay, which would still be an improvement.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 2:27 am

I honestly dont see how it could limited technology it's not even that damn complicated.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 2:40 am

as much as i find lacking technology hard to believe, if thats what they say then we have to accept it, though i hope the "technology" to do it comes soon, because it would improve on gameplay, as some players would be able to get certain shots off faster or better than others.

I don't think it's true, look at games like Star Wars - Battle front, there's 100's of characters capable of doing 100's of things and it's all on the same stage.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 7:29 am

just look at jow many dunks there are, why would it not be possible to put many shots in it. i think the baseballseries of EA allows to select a swing so it is possible to do the same with nba live (not completle sure if it was that game)

Mon Jun 06, 2005 8:16 am

baseball has alot less things going on than basketball

Mon Jun 06, 2005 8:30 am

this may be true, but in MVP Baseball 2004, when creating a player, they have the swing style of EVERYONE in the league (not sure if its still around for 2005) so it couldnt be that hard to do it for the shots, besides if XBOX 360 is going to play Live 06, doesnt that enable them to put more complexing things into the game?

Mon Jun 06, 2005 8:36 am

i personally would have to put this lower on the list of things that live has to fix to make the game better.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 9:20 am

as would i, but it is still on the list. but on of the most important things is making the CPU smarter, and not just a stop n pop 3 point machine.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 9:54 am

Well I think the only shooting styles they could change is the ones that's COMPLETELY different from the regular shooting styles they have as many have said already and it doesn't have to really be exactly every big name player in the game, but the players that really have a different shooting style compared to the one that is already in the game should be changed. I'll say change about 10 players including Marion, Redd, Allen, Posey (who kicks his legs out and shoots from the side), Prince, Dirk just to name a few.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:36 am

Of the current players (assuming Reggie doesn't come back for next season), I'd say Marion has the most distinct shooting style. It's such a quick release, especially on his 3s.
Adding to the list made by Bill Cosby, I'd say Antoine Walker's three point shooting style would come to mind, he barely gets off the floor when he shoots 3point "jump" shots.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:45 am

i would agree that marions shot is the most unique in the game

Mon Jun 06, 2005 11:31 am

I should have gone into more detail. Every animation takes memory and there is only so much memory that can be used for gameplay. It is taken up by the players attributes, art and animation. Every time the game loads, it loads the unique animations that the players need in their dunk packages. All the animations required for each player to have a unique jumpshot would take more memory than is currently feasible.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 12:36 pm

ah that makes more sense. still if they keep working at it i wouldnt be surprised to see it in a few years ( i hope)

PS: i agree Marion's is most unique, also very ugly too. theres many more that could be added to Cosby's list, but i guess we wont be seeing that for a while.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 1:27 pm

o well.... I guess it's alright for the time being as well as the other gameplay is realistic. Hey, I'm not complaining about it even if they don't have it, remember back in the day with 2000, 1999, 1998 where they had the same jump shot for everyone plus only 1 layup animation?

Mon Jun 06, 2005 1:41 pm

One thing that I think of is, if you were to TRULY have all the players different shot forms, that would also mean you have to alter the release points and timings, right? And it would make it much harder to shoot with different players, because some shoot fast, others shoot slow, etc.

Thats true, just imagine playing with the Suns, you've had JJ and Q lightin' it up for almost the whole game, then you find Marion open for a three but you hold the shot button too long and release the ball too late. But.. It would be great if you were playing with a multi tap(or the equivalent of that on xbox360) and had 4 mates playing together, each on player lock.

Mon Jun 06, 2005 9:48 pm

but the fact that it would be harder would be more realistic. it would make the game harder too which is good because even on the hardest setting it is easy.

Tue Jun 07, 2005 12:22 am

but tru nba fans know how their stars shoot in real life, so i dont think its difficult to have different release points

Tue Jun 07, 2005 5:53 am

exactly, if you watch basketball a lot, its not hard to figure out the mechanic on players shots

thats true but most of us play dynasty mode and as the league was filled with generated players we would have to learn how each and every single one shot. it would get really annoying real fast.
