Inside the NBA with Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson and Ernie Johnson

Image
Welcome everyone to Inside the NBA Eastern Conference Playoff Preview Special. I'm Ernie Johnson along side Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. In a few minutes we will be discussing all the match-ups on this year playoffs. So let’s first talk about the Eastern Conference. First match-up features the East No.1 seed and defending champion Detroit Piston vs. No.8 Philadelphia 76ers.

Image
I think the defending champs will have the advantage here. With a solid starting line-up plus some key bench like Hunter and McDyess, Sixers will have hard time matching-up. I will gonna say Pistons in 5.

Image
And that’s not all; Pistons will have huge advantage in experience. And don’t forget they are the defending champion. I also go for Detroit but in 4.

Image
Common. Kenny gives my Sixers some respect. I think they will win 1 or even 2 games.
Well I admit Pistons almost automatic to win this series but I hope it will be a great learning experience for this young Sixers. A sidelight to note, Iverson will go up against his former coach Larry Brown. i think that will motivate A.I. more. Pistons in 6.

Image
Very well said, i also think it will end in 5 games.
Now let’s talk about No. 2 Boston Celtics going up against King James-led Cleveland Cavaliers.

Image
Well, it was a surprise for many to see the Celtics clinching the 2nd seed with team like Miami Heat and their opponent Cavs were the early favorite. But if you look closely in their line-ups, they have great players and played good team basketball. On the other hand, it's seem like James was the only consistent player on this team. In one night one player step up but will disappear the next game. Guys like Gooden, McInnis and Snow should be more consistent if they want to put a great fight in this series. Celtics in 6 games.

Image
Yeah, this Celtics team surprised most of us. But with Pierce playing MVP like season plus GP back on his pre-Lakers stint, the Celtics will pass the 1st round. But if there a series here in Eastern Conference that we can see an upset, it will be this series. So I will say it will go down to last and deciding game and I’ll go with Cavs in 7.

Image
I agree with you on that. I think Cavs might still this one from the Celtics. It will goes on how they will stop King James. If we saw Wade last year took over the Heat, I think we will see more on James in this playoff. Well to add on that, another sidelight, Ricky Davis will be playing against hi former team. Also goes for the Cavs on this series 4-2.

Image
Nice to here you agree with me on that.

Image
just on this one Kenny, just this one hehehe.

Image
An upset in the making? I don’t think so, Celtics in 6.
Now lets go with seed #3 Miami Heat versus No.6 Orlando Magic.

Image
Every said Heat will win not only the Eastern Conference but also the NBA Champion trophy when they got Shaq. Also everybody said Magic will be a lottery team without McGrady. Well both team surprised us. Heat struggled all season and finished 5th in winning percentage in East while Magic made the playoff. But its playoff time and he all know come playoff time its Shaq will step-up big time. Heat in 5.

Image
Not to mention, Wade playing better. In his rookie year, he put some show, and this year with Shaq on his side. Things looking better for Wade. On the other hand, Francis will miss his buddy Mobley who was traded last February. And without a big man to stop Big Diesel, I think it will end with in 4 games.

Image
Even the resurgence of Grant hill will not help this Magic team against Shaq and Wade combo. Also Heat playing well since they Luke Walton. Walton, starts at small forward are putting almost triple double in some nights. I will also go with Heat but in 5 games. I think Magic will still one at home.

Image
I will not put my money against Shaq so it will be Heat in 4.
Now last but not the least, the No.4 and 5 teams. Indiana Pacers vs. New York Knicks with the Pacers got the home-court advantage.

Image
Okey lets see, Pacers got the 2nd best record in East while Knicks almost got the 2nd seed. Celtics and Knicks have identical record but Celtics clinch the No.2 spot..

Image
Well, Celtics got the 2nd seed coz they go first via alphabetical order. That was a bullsh*t rule made by EA in determining tiebreaker. F*uck them, this small thing they overlook makes gamers hate this game. Hope they look at this year next year. If not every team will change their name to like this Anew York Kicks or Arlando Magic or Awashington Wizards.

Image
Ha ha ha. Cool down Charles. Yeah EA f*ck up against but let’s not talked about that.

Image
Okey, I’ll continue. I think Pacers will win this series. Miller love playing the Knicks and this maybe the last time to see Reggie in uniform. So I go with Pacers in 6.

Image
I agree with you on that Magic… Knicks may backcourt duo of Marbury-Crawford but they will have no answer on Pacers O’Neal and Artest, not to mention they also got Miller and Jackson. Pacers will win this one in 5 games.

Image
As much as I want to discuss this series it will all end up with Pacers winning this. So well might as well just said Pacers in 6.

Image
Pacers indeed. They win it in 5 games.
Well, that's it for tonight folks. We will see you next time on Inside the NBA for the Western Conference Preview. I’m Ernie Johnson along with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. Goodnight.

Inside the NBA with Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson and Ernie Johnson

Image
Welcome everyone to Inside the NBA Western Conference Playoff Preview Special. I'm Ernie Johnson along side Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. In a few minutes we will be discussing all the match-ups on this year playoffs. So let’s talk about the Eastern Conference. First match-up features the West No.1 seed Sacramento Kings vs. No.8 Memphis Grizzlies.

Image
I think having the best record in NBA showed how good this Kings’ team is. Acquiring Cuttino Mobley mid-way in the season only makes them more formidable in offense. They will go up against one of the deepest team in NBA. But with Kings having in this playoffs for so many years, they know how to handle pressure and I think they will pull this one in. Gonna give it to the Kings in 6 games.

Image
I think injuries will have a factor in this series, Kings always screwed by injuries. C-Web, Peja and Bibby need to be in great shape for this team to be successful. Except from that, I think the Kings will be in Western Semifinals after 6 games.

Image
If you remember in Kings’ last regular games against the Suns, they have in their hand which team to face. If they win the game they will play the Griz but if they lost that game they will play the Suns. I think Kings thought they can win more against the Griz. I also think they will win this but if they not be careful , we may see an upset here, Kings in 7 games.

Image
Record already showed how good this year Kings are, so I will say Kings in 5 games.
Now let’s talk about No. 2 San Antonio Spurs going up against Houston Rockets.

Image
This match-up will be a great one, TD-Manu duo going up against Yao-T-Mac duo. Though the Rockets duo seem not that well as many as expected. As much as I said this is a well even match-up team, I think Spurs will win this one or even win it all the way. They are the favorites and they playing like that. This series will end in 6 games with the Spurs advancing to the semifinal round.

Image
Both team struggles in this season but Spurs made one great finishing kick to clinch the division title. They won 12 straight games from March to April and I think they already playing the way they should be, a title-contender team. I also will say Spurs in 6 games.

Image
I think both duos will cancel each out, so other guys will be a great factor in this series outcome. Guys like Parker and Barry for the Spurs and Wesley and Howard of the Rockets will need to step up. I like Spurs chances in here and I will go with them Spurs in 7 games.

Image
I also think the Spurs will win this one also in 7 games.
Now lets go with seed #3 Minnesota Timberwolves versus No.6 Los Angeles Lakers.

Image
Everyone said Lakers will be a lottery team without Shaq, But with Kobe on your team you will always be a special team. I like to see an upset here but that will be a tall order for my Lakers. They will go up again the leading MVP candidate Kevin Garnett and co. Though my mind said Wolves will win this, my heart said Lakers all the way. It will end in 7 games… with Lakers winning it.

Image
I know were you coming from Magic. But as you said KG will try his best to pass the 1st round again as they did last year. But he needs guys like Cassell and Wally to be injury-less post season to do that. I’ll go with Minny in 6 games.

Image
These 2 teams met last year in Western Conference finals and met with the same seeding 2 years ago. Both series were won by Lakers. With Wolves having the same line-up against this fully-revamped Lakers, I will say Wolves will gonna win this series. And they will only need 5 games to dispose the Lakers.

Image
I like Lakers chances in here but I also think its payback time for the Wolves. Wolves in 6 games.
Now last but not the least, the No.4 team Dallas Mavericks and No. 5 Denver Nuggets.

Image
Dallas Mavericks held the division and no.2 spot most of the season before they went down due to Spurs last great run to snatch it from them. They still play well and with Dirk, and Finley, Mavs will win this one against Melo and K-Mart tandem. Mavs in 6 games.

Image
To add to that, guys like Terry and Stackhouse coming from the bench, only make this team formidable. If Nuggets don’t find ways to neutralize these players, they will be out of this playoff in 5 games.

Image
I will also go with the Mavs in 5 games. Melo will not be as great as James will do in this post-season.

Image
I think Mavs will win this one in 6 games.
Well, that's it for tonight folks. We will see you next time on Inside the NBA. I’m Ernie Johnson along with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. Goodnight.

yes if all top seed teams advance (except my Lakers), going to the finls will be that hard. but even teams like rockets (im 1-3 against them, Griz (Miller and Posey torch me) and nuggets (I hate playing against lenard) will be as hard as the top 4 teams. well i try my best to win it all the way.
by the way thaks for the challenge i will not go out in the 1st round

as i said lower seeded team also have a chance to advance and i will also have hard time against them.
next for implementing the playoff prediction. you make my playoff like the real one.
i like your prediction and yes i saw memphis upsets the kings one time when i sim whole playoff so i can test the nba draft.
and losing to spurs is quite realistic. (Y)

6th Seed Los Angeles Lakers Battles No.3 Minnesota Timberwolves as Playoffs 2005 Begins

MINNESOTTA (Ticker) --Los Angeles Lakers begin defending their Western Conference title as they open up this year playoffs against Minnesota Timberwolves. Wolves won the season series against the Lakers 2-1.

This Series will feature two teams that met the past 2 years. They met last year in Western Conference finals and in the 1st round 2 years ago. Both series won by the Lakers and with both series Wolves have the home-court advantage. But this year might have a different result. Lakers, after losing in the Finals last season , revamped almost the whole team. They have a new coach, different players with only Bryant only the holdover of the Fab Four. Without Shaq, Lakers were able to make a decent run in the regular season and barely making the playoffs.

Bryant as expected led the Lakers in scoring with 27 points a game, which also the no.1 in NBA. But surprisingly, the players everybody saying a selfish guy, also led his team in assist with his 5.5 assists per game. While Odom, part of the Shaq deal, led the team in rebounding. He average 10.2 caroms per outings and led the Lakers in double-double. Bryant and Odom maybe the cornerstone of this new Lakers but guys like Caron Butler, Chucky Atkins and Chris Mihm will need to put good consistent numbers in order to get pass the Wolves. Also their bench players like George and Divac will be a factor in a long series like this. One player they will miss will be Jones, who will be out for 4 weeks due to an injury.

“This is not a new situation for me, I’m ready to step big time as I always do, I’m the one who put the Lakers deep in the playoffs but come Finals time, a lazy big guy will step out to win the Finals MVP plum,” Bryant said asking about how he will to be playing this playoff with Shaq on his side.

“But this time, I got teammates who will help me throughout the playoffs, we may not advance to the finals but will gonna give our best to reach our goal,” Bryant added.

Its’ nice to be back in playoffs, he made a good run when were in Miami and will try to make one this year, though it will be more difficult since here in West,” said Lamar Odom.

We just gonna play it one game at a time, that’s what I said to my boys. We know we’re not the favorite to win this series and that will be less pressure for us. Coach Rudy T said who already announced he will step down as Lakers coach after this season due to health reasons.

On the other hand, Wolves will try to advance to the Semifinal round for the 2nd straight years after 7 year of early 1st round exit. Last year, having the best record in NBA, they not only able to pass 1st round but were able to play in the Western Conference finals only to lose against Lakers. This will be an extra motivation for the Wolves to win this series and avenge their 2 straight series lost against the Lakers. Kevin Garnett, the reigning MVP and this year leading MVP candidate will again lead his team. Injuries and age will be the factors on how well the Wolves will fair in this playoffs. Guys like Cassell, Szczerbiak and Sprewell should stay healthy for the Wolves.

“I’m not thinking about individual awards, I just played night in and night out to help my team win. Last year, it was nice to finally get over the hump and I’ll try to do it again this year,” Garnett said.

Lakers are a young but still a dangerous team. Having the home-court advantage is a big plus for us. Though I said to the team that even we have this advantage, any team can steal that from us so we have to play well every game, at home or at the road,” coach Flip Saunders said.

Series Key Matchups:
Kevin Garnett vs. Lamar Odom

How well will Lamar Odom match-up against Kevin Garnett? This will be answer as we go along the series. Guarding KG will somehow affect Odom’s offensive game with most of his energy will be use in covering Garnett. Also foul trouble will also limit Odom minutes unless Lakers decide to play Odom at the no. 3 spot. KG, on the other hand, will be alright with this match-up as he even went up against big and stronger guy like Duncan and Shaq in the past.
Advantage: Kevin Garnett

Latrell Sprewell vs. Kobe Bryant

This match-up at the shooting guard position will also be a great one. Though Bryant clearly the more talented athletic from the 2 due mainly that Bryant is younger than Spree, Latrell always have a big game against the Lakers. And if Lakers don’t get careful, we might see Latrell having a field day in scoring with his outside sniping or driving to the basket. On the other hand, as we said Bryant, is faster, talented and athletic player. He can score anytime he wants and can do that in many ways. Wolves will try to stop him by doubling him. But Bryant led his team in assists and we can see him finding open teammates with that Wolves defense.
Advantage: Kobe Bryant

the two teams look pretty even on paper.
the lakers have an average starting lineup rating of 71.8 while the t-wolves have an average for their starting lineup of 73
it should certainly be tight.

Game 1 Recap: Los Angeles Lakers @ Minnesota Timberwolves

Image

Age Doesn't Matters

Image
Sam Cassell got his game on high gear to
lead the Wolves in a victory against the
Lakers

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) –- That’s what Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell showed in front of their home-court crowd. The Lakers had a hard time trying to stop the Wolves backcourt duo as they combined for 52 points.

The game was close right form the start with both team biggest lead was not more than 4 points. Garnett started well in the 1st period but have to sit out most of the quarter due to early foul trouble. But in the 2nd period, Sprewell and Cassell scored 14 and 18 points respectively, almost the total points of Wolves points in the entire period. Only Madsen scored the other 2 points for Wolves big 34 points production in the 2nd quarter. That effort put the Wolves up by 59-48 at halftime break. Bryant also played limited minutes due to foul trouble.

Lakers were unable to make a run in the 3rd period despite Bryant and Butler joined Odom in Lakers’ offense. Sprewell again torched the Lakers either with his outside shooting or slashing to the lane.

Wolves, lead by 9 coming to the final period, somehow played relaxed in the final period. This helped Lakers cut the deficit to just 4, 88-84 and at 94-90 with 4:41 left in the game. But 12- 4 run by Wolves capped with an alley-oops pass from Hoiberg to Garnett, put the Wolves’ lead back to 12 points. They able to hold on to that lead for a 114-101 win.

Cassell finished with 25 points and 8 assists to win Player of the Game honor. Sprewell led the Wolves with his 27 point while Garnett playing the entire game with foul trouble still finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Odom and Bryant both scored 21 points and Butler chipped in 20 points fro the Lakers.

Wolves now lead their series 1-0. Games 2 will be played again at Target Center.

Post game Interview:

Image
"I got to an early foul trouble and somewhat affected my game. I’m became less aggressive in both end of the court. We will come back on game 2”.

Image
"They just protected their home-court advantage. But we still try to steal one game here. Spree, I think kill us with his outside shooting, he always plays well against us.”

Image
“I think we play well, the wolves just played better and we made some bad play defensively. We will try to make some adjustment and hope a different result next game.

Image
“Lamar played aggressive and that put me in early foul trouble. I proud with Sam and Latrell, they simply took over when I went out.”

Image
"I just got it going in the 2nd period and from then I think I can make any shots I’ll shoot. And I think Bryant foul trouble helped me get my game. He’s the no.1 perimeter defender in their team.”

Image
“Well, my teammates helped in the entire ballgame. Spree and I just have a great game but we still need KG on the court on our next few games to win this series. I know Lakers will be more aggressive in stopping me next game.

Image
“Although we saw 1or 2 players stepping up, I think it’s a whole team effort. You just have to give credit to other guys. Great play by Spree and Sam, KG’ s leadership, Kandi rebounding, and even Ebi few minutes in the court, all that help us win this ballgame.”

all going to plan for my predictions (outside of that Knicks upset of Pacers)....

it should be interesting to see if Micchy can get game 2 in Minnesota....if he does then it will shift the power in this series....either way, I think it's going to the full 7 games....
