Discussion about NBA Live 2003.

Hi, everybody! I've just made the first(maybe) roster patch with up-to-date players rating and develop stats.
I've spent hundreds of hours on it, and hope you guys will like it!
Here is the key feature of the patch,
- Corrected all players information. (height, weight, jersey numbers and more...)
- Re-calulated players rating included Field Goal, 3 Point, Free Throw, Off. Rebound, Def. Rebound, Steal and Block directly from 2002-03 Statistics.
- New definition of Develop Stats for better simulation result.
- Four individual roster included "Single Mode", "Battle Mode", "Online Mode" and "Non-Tweak" for different needs.
I know you always want more transparency. So, I decided to open the calculation formula.
Here is the details,
- Code:
following is the formula which is calculated directly from 2002-03 Statistics,
RATING FORMULA RANGE
FG ^Adjusted Points per minute + 3PT rating + FT rating 60-90
3PT 3 Point Percentage + 3 Point Made per minute 50-90
FT Free Throw Percentage 50-99
STEAL Steals per minute 50-70
BLOCK Blocks per minute 50-70
O.REB O. Rebound per minute * Team's O. Rebound efficiency 50-99
D.REB D. Rebound per minute * Team's D. Rebound efficiency 50-99
^Adjusted Points = (2 * PTS - FGA - 0.5 * FTA) / (Team PTS) * (Team Off. coefficiency)
following is the formula which is calculated from original value,
RATING FORMULA
DUNK Scaled from 50-99 to 50-90
INS. SCR Scaled from 60-99 to 50-80
PASS Scaled from 50-99 to 60-99
SPEED Scaled from 50-99 to 50-95
QUICK Scaled from 50-99 to 50-95
JUMP Scaled from 50-99 to 50-90
Finally, please try it and tell me what do you think on it.
Your feedback is essential for me to make the patch better and better!

Zaxis,
Good job on the rosters and tweaks. Played 3 games so far and each game resulted in fairly realistic results.
Steals and turnovers seem to have reared its' ugly head more times than I would have liked though. Other than that, a very well done job all-around.
Keep 'em coming!

First off, let me tell that i still didn´t play with your rosters, bur i´ve just downloaded them. It looks great stuff but i have a few questions, if you could answer me it would be cool. So...
1 - what are the gameplay settings you recommend? Minutes pe quarter, difficulty level, arcade or simulation, that kind of stuff.
2 - could you please post the stats of a couple of games you made with your rosters? Im particularly interested in REALISTIC fg% (between 400% and 480%) and REALISTIC number of steals and blocks.
3 - Kevon sent me this great rosters of his, and im playing with them for a couple of weeks now. Is your patch similar? the only way i see to improve this Kevon rosters is a bit more dribbling ability from the guards and a litte lower fg% (both Human and CPU, but especially Human). I also think the CPU plays too well on offense and makes sometimes STUPID shots (like three guys in the shooter face, one of trying to block and i STEEL makes the shot).
Thanks in advance

Hi, Nuno! I hope the following could help.
1. This roster patch is designed for superstar level and simulation mode. I recommend you play 7-8 minutes per quarter for more realistic result.
2. Usually, my FG is arround 50-55%, with 10 blocks and 5 Steals. And computer is arround 40-50%, 5 blocks and 10 steals. I do not have any complete game stats in my hand right now. Maybe I'll post some here later.
3. Oh, really? There was somebody work similar to mine? I'm new in here. Could you tell me who is Kevon and where can i get his patch?

Dear td3ph:
Wow! Your patch is nice. The only thing i don't like is the FG rating. I think it should not calculate straight forward from player FG%. It make a dunker such as Kevin Cato have better FG than a shooter like Mike Miller. Despite this hole, the other settings are nice.

Well, i really don´t know who he is but he is around in the forums. I think he has a great sense of realism about the NBA and you can see that in his rosters (im getting even better realism know that i got use to them) However, i have the e-mail he sent me with is rosters. I would send it to you but i don´t know your e-mail...
Thanks fot the gameplay setings, but now that i played a bit with your rosters, i think the players are too fast and driblle too quickly...
But the player ratings are GREAT!!!

Dear Nuno,
After your word, I'm really interest on Kevon's work. Could you send it to me? My email address is (
zaxis03@yahoo.com).
And thanks for your comments! I agree that the Dribble should be decrease a little. I'll fix it in the next revision. But i think the players speed is just fit now. You may take a simple test, try to run from one baseline to the other in pratice mode and clock it. You will get the answer!

Ok, The Notorious an Zaxis! I´ve send you the rosters you asked for. I also put some things you should know about them.
The Notorious, since you live in Montreal, i think you are an Habs fan. Could you please tell me how Mike Ribeiro is doing? He is son of portuguese and i think he has portuguese nationality. Im asking because im portuguese and i live in Portugal

Great patch Zaxis! Ratings are really very accurate, but I have a question for all you. It's about stats after simulating games. I mean, in season mode, when you simulate some games, stats of the teams are not realistic.
All starters have 35 minutes per game and most bench players play only 10 mpg and score 3 ppg. You said that you changed Develop stats (D fields in players.dbf, those in the last columns) but there's no effect in the season stats. I tried to increase FG attempts of bench players, and reduce those from starters, but neither...
I really would like to have realistics stats when simulating games.
Does anyone have any idea? Have you tried modifiying more these D fields? Help, pleaseeee!
Thanx

Dear Nuno,
I've tested the roster you sent to me several times. I think beside the players speed, the overall game feeling is quite good, and the result is quite realistic too. But when i checked the players rating carefully, i have been full of confused.
I really interest how did the rating calculate. Some players like Guyton and Wang have incredible high FG, Dean Garrett was the fastest player beside Iverson, and Tony Massenburg fly much higher than Kobe and Vince.
But beside these, I still think Kevon did a good job of balancing the game, the game result are great. and finally, thanks for your mail!

Hi, Brownie!
The minutes of bench players problem was cause by internal programing. I think there is no solution currently. But you can play with my patch for better simulate result of the starters. It especially help some young player like Stoudemire and Giricek. and finally, thanks for your support!

zaxis,
You said that you spent hundreds of hours on the patch...did most of that time go into changing players's apperances and numbers? Or did you have to actually go through by hand and change peoples ratings?
Fri Jan 17, 2003 11:14 am
Hi, K-Flex!
Nice question, I think most of the time I've spent was checking and correcting player's information, defining the formula and testing it repeatly. I have to say i did not modify any single player rating individually by hand. All of the ratings in the patch are generate by the formula directly. I think this is the only way to get the most accurate and fair result.
Do you have any comments on my patch? Please let me know what do you think of it!
