That's cool. I actually picked up NBA 08 on PS2 a while back, I've been meaning to check out its story and do a feature on it. Might have to see if I can track down a couple of the other games in the series for cheap, might be interesting to look back on.

I might grind through them and record the cutscenes one of these days. The stories are really the only saving grace of the series. Still don't know if "Big W" 's son ever wakes up from the coma.

March 3rd: 5 Tips to Endure a Long MyCAREER Season

I'm almost at the end of the regular season in my rookie campaign in NBA 2K17's MyCAREER. As much fun as I've had so far, it's definitely been a grind, especially since I prefer to play twelve minute quarters. Even with shorter quarter lengths, 82 games is quite a marathon, and it's difficult not to get impatient once you're past the All-Star break, and the postseason is looming on the horizon. Of course, if you're battling to qualify for the Playoffs, each game is going to have more meaning, and that should hold your interest. However, if you've already clinched a Playoff berth, a little bit of boredom might start to set in.

Fortunately, there are a few ideas that can make tedious stretches in MyCAREER a bit more fun. Some of these suggestions arguably apply to MyLEAGUE and MyGM as well, but I personally find that boredom during the regular season is more of a problem in MyCAREER, since you're locked to a single player, and you obviously don't have all the team management functions to change things up. With that being said, here are five ideas that have helped break up the boredom for me, and will hopefully help some of you make it through the regular season grind, whether you're playing MyCAREER or another mode.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Roster Oddities in Basketball Games

March 17th: 5 Roster Oddities in Basketball Games

Whether you're updating a basketball video game or simply playing it, the accuracy of the roster is probably going to be of great importance to you. Sometimes, that authenticity is limited or compromised by factors such as the roster cut-off date, lockouts, and a lack of licensing rights for specific players. Official roster updates have ultimately counteracted those first two issues, and unofficial updates can provide workarounds for the third. Furthermore, through consistent official updates and user customisation, questionable ratings don't have to remain a problem for long, either.

Of course, even if certain issues can be easily resolved by official or unofficial means, basketball games have presented some unusual oddities in their default rosters over the years. Sometimes, unusual real life circumstances lead to inaccuracies, or create other interesting situations. In other cases, the game's roster management functionality itself is cumbersome, or otherwise strange. Whatever the case may be, there have been a number of roster oddities in basketball video games over the years, and today I'm talking about what I feel are five of the most interesting and noteworthy examples.

Postby Andrew on Fri Mar 24, 2017 10:33 pm

March 24th: 5 Players Who Appeared in More Video Games than NBA Games

Simply getting drafted by an NBA team, or making it onto a Summer League or training camp roster, is an achievement in and of itself. It's further than a lot of players will make it in their basketball careers, and for those who do get that far, it's the first step towards realising their dream of playing in the NBA. Of course, there aren't enough roster spots available for everyone, and a lot of players will end up getting cut before the regular season begins. Some may find their way back onto an NBA roster and finally debut at a later date, while many others will not.

However, while some players never get the opportunity to suit up and play in a real NBA game, they may still see themselves make it to the big time on the virtual hardwood. The default rosters in NBA videos game must be locked at a certain cut-off date, which often results in missing players out of the box, but can also ensure that players on the bubble actually end up being included. Should such a player never make it back to the league, they'll end up appearing in more NBA video games than real life NBA games. Here are five players who did just that, whom you may or may not remember.

I think Isaiah Austin was added to a Roster update as a "Free Agent" in NBA 2K17.

Yeah he was added at one point. There's definitely been more than five, but there's always the possibility I'll do another article with another five.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Times Basketball Games Predicted The Future

Postby Andrew on Fri Mar 31, 2017 9:46 pm

March 31st: 5 Times Basketball Games Predicted The Future

With a bit of creative thinking and hindsight, it's not too difficult to find "correct predictions" everywhere. Take Michael Jordan's "Total D" basketball trading card from 1995, for example. Noting that the one-time Defensive Player of the Year is still generally known more for his dunks and scoring outbursts than lockdown D, the back of the card refers to him as an "Aerial Wizard". A reference to his high flying exploits, or a prediction of his second comeback with Washington, as well as the team's name change a year before it was even announced? I'll let you be the judge.

If you're thinking rationally, you'll have correctly written off the above suggestion as nothing more than a couple of fun coincidences. As I said though, it isn't too difficult to take those coincidences and spin a story about them eerily predicting the future. To that end, this week's Five is all about basketball video games that predicted one thing or another...or so it would seem. And no, the inclusion of the Charlotte Bobcats in NBA Live 2004 doesn't count; they'd already been unveiled, and we all knew they would be making their debut the following season.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Strange Occurrences in My NBA 2K17 MyCAREER

Postby Andrew on Fri Apr 07, 2017 8:47 pm

April 7th: 5 Strange Occurrences in My NBA 2K17 MyCAREER

Having played through the first season in NBA 2K17's MyCAREER and started on my second, it's fair to say that I've greatly enjoyed the mode, really for the first time since NBA 2K13 if I'm to be completely honest. The story was unintrusive, I found myself back on the Denver Nuggets, and it was a lot of fun dominating the league and setting some records on route to the NBA championship. Jumping to the Chicago Bulls and turning up the difficulty level has freshened things up in my sophomore season, and although I'm not playing the mode as frequently as I was a few weeks ago, I know that I'll eagerly pick it up again whenever the mood strikes.

The experience has been fun, and I do feel that it's the best incarnation of MyCAREER since the implementation of the story-driven approach, but there's definitely been some weirdness. Now, there's an element of fantasy to all of the modes in a basketball video game, and since strange and unexpected things do happen in the real NBA, it can be tough to say what's realistic and what isn't. At the same time, certain events are highly unlikely, and only seem to occur in video games in the name of shaking things up. When it comes to strange occurrences in my NBA 2K17 MyCAREER, here are five that come to mind.

April 14th: Top 5 PR Disasters in Basketball Gaming

Video games are serious business...well, just about as serious as a hobby can get, anyway. It's a multi-billion dollar industry with passionate consumers who naturally want value for money, and to be valued by the companies making the products they're buying. The relationship between gamers and developers can be contentious at times, and while our behaviour admittedly hasn't always been exemplary, there are certainly times when EA Sports and Visual Concepts have made disappointing decisions, or acted in a way that left a lot of basketball gamers feeling unappreciated or ripped off.

There have been several unfortunate incidents over the years, so as with any Top 5, I can't account for all of them, and even if you do agree with my picks, you may not agree with the ranking. I've tried to base my selections on a combination of the severity of the incident, the long-term impact it's had, and the general level of outrage that I've observed within the community. Finally, as always, these lists are intended to offer up my take on a subject while beginning the conversation, not ending it. With that being said, let's tip off the countdown with number five.

One thing that should have made this list: The college basketball video game fiasco.

A player (Ed O'Bannon) sued because likenesses were used without permission, effectively abolishing the NCAA basketball video game genre. We are left with mods. And this is a big deal to a lot of people, because people truly enjoyed the college basketball games that were released.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 NBA 2K Features I Want To See Return

Postby Andrew on Tue Apr 25, 2017 9:06 am

April 21st: 5 NBA 2K Features I Want To See Return

While many of us do have our gripes with recent NBA 2K games, for the most part the series has been very solid for a long time now. Unlike NBA Live, it hasn't been set back by frequent changes in direction. Instead, it's continued to build upon its established foundation, and the quality of the experience has been fairly consistent as a result. The depth of the modes and the assortment of features and options have gone a long way in making NBA 2K successful. From robust single player experiences to different modes for online play, to roster editing and customisation, there's a lot for basketball gamers to sink their teeth into.

Unfortunately, some features have fallen by the wayside over the years. There are various reasons for their absence in recent titles, from technical issues to design choices. Thankfully, we have seen some really great features make their way back into the game, such as the "Start Today" option in MyLEAGUE and MyGM. However, there are still some other features from past NBA 2K titles that would make a deep and well-rounded product even better, if they were to return. These are the five features that spring immediately to mind for me.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Preferable Pre-Order Bonuses

Postby Andrew on Fri Apr 28, 2017 10:41 pm

April 28th: 5 Preferable Pre-Order Bonuses

Yes, I know. The whole concept of pre-ordering is one of the biggest problems with video games these days, right up there with always online connectivity, and the need for day one patches. Ideally, we'd all band together and refuse to pre-order, in an effort to curb the practice. However, that's not going to happen. Developers obviously want to move their product, which means providing gamers with an incentive to put their money down as soon as possible. That incentive comes in the form of a variety of pre-order bonuses, which in theory reward gamers for having faith in a title.

In practice, pre-order bonuses can be a little underwhelming. If you're not into "ultimate collector's editions", the physical extras such as hats and posters aren't going to offer much incentive, but even if we just focus on the in-game items, certain pre-order bonuses can leave something to be desired. The "Early Tip-Off Weekend" bonus for pre-ordering the last couple of NBA 2K games is a great idea that should be retained, but there are a few other things that both Visual Concepts and EA Sports could be doing to reward loyal customers who pre-order. In some cases, that simply involves a slightly different approach to what they're already doing.

May 5th: 5 Best 2K Pro-Am Team Names

I'll be honest with you, fellow basketball gamers. A couple of things made me grumble today, and I was all ready to scathingly vent about them in this week's Friday Five, since I didn't already have a column prepared. However, I decided that I didn't want to do that. It's not because I'm afraid to share my opinions, or reluctant to stand by them. No, I simply decided that I'd grumbled enough over matters that are very trivial compared to other things that are going on in the world right now, and felt it would be better to write something more positive. Venting can be cathartic and I like covering more serious topics, but there's a time and place for lighter discussion, too.

So, I read through my list of topic ideas, and came across one that I'd previously done a little preparation for: the five best 2K Pro-Am team names that I've encountered in NBA 2K17. As you may know, the official NLSC squad's name is THRILLHO, which is a reference to a classic episode of The Simpsons. We've often wondered if our opponents get a kick out of seeing the name, especially given some of the dornas Arcane has created for our arena. There have definitely been a couple of team names that made us chuckle; some are quite creative, some are witty references, and a few have found a way around the profanity filter. However, these five are my favourites.

May 12th: 5 Misguided Things Basketball Gamers Say

It's a rare fanbase indeed that isn't outspoken in some regard, and basketball gamers are no exception. That certainly isn't a bad thing, of course. Whether it's positive or negative, constructive or snarky, there's satisfaction and catharsis in expressing yourself and sharing experiences with your fellow basketball gamers. With open lines of communication to the people creating the games, we also have an opportunity to influence their development for the better. Bottom line, a passionate and enthusiastic fanbase is always going to have something to talk about, and an assortment of strong opinions.

As a community, we have a lot of insight into basketball games, and some great ideas about the experiences that we'd like to get out of them. However, that doesn't mean that our opinions are above the influence of bias, cynicism, or occasionally even selfishness. Logic and reason gives way to passion and emotion, and we make declarations that are definitely wide of the mark. Whether we're criticising a game, defending a game, advocating a particular gaming style, or making sweeping declarations about the hobby, we basketball gamers are prone to making some misguided statements from time to time. Statements such as...

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Tips for Creating Basketball Game Content

May 19th: 5 Tips for Creating Basketball Game Content

So, you love basketball video games, and you want to create some content for or based on them. That's great! The ratio of creators vs. consumers in any community rarely favours the creators, so any time that somebody new wants to create entertaining and informative content for basketball games, it's most welcome. From our original content and talented modding community, to popular YouTubers and the EA Sports Game Changers, people are talking about basketball games, finding ways to help their fellow gamers enhance their experience, aiding the developers, and providing something interesting and entertaining to read or watch.

Although there are some well established platforms on which to create basketball gaming content, it can be difficult to know where to begin. To that end, I thought that I'd put together a shortlist of tips for anyone who wants to get involved in creating mods, videos, articles, and so on. Having observed what makes other people's content successful (and in my opinion enjoyable), as well as having tried my hand at more than a couple of creative endeavours related to basketball games over the years, these are some traits and techniques that I like to keep in mind. Hopefully, some of them will be useful to aspiring content creators within the basketball gaming community.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Biggest Developments in Modding

Postby Andrew on Fri May 26, 2017 8:25 pm

May 26th: 5 Biggest Developments in Modding

I've said it many, many times before, but our modding community has done some great things over the years. Of course, creating all those amazing mods hasn't always been easy, and in the case of some games, it's taken a while after their release to develop all the necessary tools. Even today, there are obstacles that make modding difficult at times, and there are some things that we used to be able to do that we presently cannot. Obviously, the goal here is to do the best we can with the tools at our disposal, and keep trying to develop new methods and resources that will help us to tinker with basketball video games as desired.

With that in mind, we only need to look back at the major developments in modding to find inspiration. As a community, we've been able to overcome a lot of obstacles in being able to modify NBA Live and NBA 2K, and in one or two instances, the developers themselves have helped us along the way. In the spirit of recognising all the advancements in modding, and hopefully providing some inspiration to keep doing what we're doing, I'd like to discuss five major milestones that I believe have marked some of the most important developments in the hobby. Without them, modding would certainly be far more limited, if not impossible.

June 2nd: 5 Things NLSC THRILLHO Learned in 2K Pro-Am

Even though we've cut back on our 2K Pro-Am sessions in NBA 2K17, the members of NLSC THRILLHO still get together once a week, or at least once a fortnight, to play a few games. As Arcane and I have mentioned in recent episodes of the NLSC Podcast, we've had a couple of really fun sessions recently including one where we finished the night on a five game winning streak, but also a couple of very frustrating ones. Last week's session was an example of the latter, leading us to call it a night after only two games.

At this point, we've played over 470 games, which is the equivalent of about five and three quarter seasons (or a little under two and a half seasons, adjusting the twenty minute games for regulation length). NLSC THRILLHO certainly isn't one of the top-ranked squads, but with all those games, we do at least have a lot of experience under our belts. To that end, we've undoubtedly learned a thing or two about the mode, which has given us a new perspective as we look ahead to NBA 2K18. If I may speak on behalf of NLSC THRILLHO for a moment, these are probably the five most important lessons we've learned in NBA 2K17's 2K Pro-Am.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Failed Ideas Newer Basketball Games Salvaged

June 9th: 5 Failed Ideas Newer Basketball Games Salvaged

Sometimes, disappointing basketball video games still bring surprisingly good ideas to the table. Likewise, even the best basketball video games can have features that seem kind of weak compared to the rest of the product. And of course, ideas that were good in theory can be executed poorly, regardless of the game's overall quality. In the best case scenario, great ideas that didn't pan out the first time around or were overshadowed by their game's shortcomings can be dusted off, polished up, and put to use in much better releases. If an idea has merit, it's worth revisiting.

While it may be harsh to call some of the ideas I'm discussing here "failures", their first incarnation was at the very least problematic, and their basic concepts ended up being shelved for at least a few years. Upon making their way back into more recent basketball video games, they've benefitted from advancements in technology and fine-tuning of the original concept, ultimately working out a lot better as a result. Some credit therefore has to be given to those original ideas, which obviously weren't all bad. Not every one of these ideas is universally liked by basketball gamers, but at the very least, they've been salvaged and done better since their debut.

It's pretty much what 2K has done in NBA 2K17, just without the on-screen targeting.

June 16th: 5 Mods I'd Like To Make This Year

Although I don't get involved with the modding scene as much as I used to, I still like to whip something up and release new mods whenever I can. I really enjoyed going back and updating my 1996 season mod for NBA Live 2004, and with some of the great court and jersey mods that Murat has been working on, I'm looking forward to releasing another new version in the not too distant future. These days I'm primarily focusing on content such as articles, videos, and the NLSC Podcast, but I do have a list of ideas for mods that I'd like to make, and there are some in particular that I'd really like to find time for, some of which I've discussed in two previous columns.

Please note that this is not intended to be an announcement, a To Do list, or anything like that. There's no guarantee that I'll be able to make these mods this year, or ever for that matter. However, at least one has already seen a couple of beta/demo releases, and others are ideas that probably wouldn't take too long to create, in between the other content that I'm working on (as well as other site updates, and of course, my day job and personal life). However, when the itch to get back into some modding starts to flare up, these are the mods that I'd be most interested in creating in the near future...time permitting, of course.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Basketball Games I Wish I Owned

Postby Andrew on Fri Jun 23, 2017 11:20 pm

June 23rd: 5 Basketball Games I Wish I Owned

Over the years, I've built up a fairly big collection of basketball games. Some I've purchased new upon their release and I still have my original copies, some I've traded in and picked up again second-hand years later, and some I've added to my collection many years after they first came out. I like having full series wherever possible, and it's been fun to check out basketball games that I never got around to playing when they were new. It's also helped in creating content for the NLSC, particularly the Wayback Wednesday features, so I've enjoyed adding to my collection in recent years whenever I've been able to find a bargain on eBay.

My collection of basketball games isn't complete, of course. Some titles are difficult to track down or cost more than I'm currently willing and able to spend, while others are only available on platforms that I don't own, or were never released in the PAL region. As such, there are a handful of basketball games that I don't currently own and very likely never will, but for one reason or another, wish that I did. The basketball games that I'm talking about today are, in no particular order, the top five titles that I'd love to add to my collection, if it were at all feasible.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Cheesiest Moves in Basketball Games

June 30th: 5 Cheesiest Moves in Basketball Games

We all want to see basketball games continue to get better, and eliminate cheesy moves and tactics as much as possible. Well, most of us do, at any rate. Judging by some of the 2K Pro-Am games that I've played in NBA 2K16 and NBA 2K17, a few gamers probably wouldn't be happy if a few of the exploits and loopholes were taken care of! Nevertheless, I feel confident in saying it's what a majority of basketball gamers want to see, and that it ultimately remains a goal of the development teams at both EA Sports and Visual Concepts. If you look back at basketball video games through the years, you can see improvement in that regard.

No game is going to be perfect though, and completely eliminating cheese is easier said than done. Gamers are always going to seek out the most effective tactics, and while these days that usually does mean playing smart basketball, there are still exploits to be found here and there. Throughout all the generations of basketball video games, there have been unstoppable moves and cheap tactics that gamers have discovered and exploited for easier wins. For this week's Friday Five, I've compiled a list of what I feel are five of the most infamous gameplay exploits; indeed, the cheesiest moves you'll come across in basketball video games.

Good read, the outside scorer from Live 06 was definitely a pain in the ass. I distinctly remember the computer AI using Wade and Kobe on the hardest difficulty almost made me quit and go back to Live 05 entirely.

My favourite cheese move definitely belongs to Live 04's hop step button. I believe it was the first time it was introduced to the game and you literally could not cancel the animation of the move so you would just awkwardly push defenders away from you which gave you a clear lay up almost 100% of the time.

Live 05 to me was one of my favourites of all time simply because they managed to add that stumbling animation if you would abuse the move.

Oh yeah, NBA Live 2004's Pro Hop was overpowered too. Problem was that although gameplay sliders were introduced that year, it wasn't until NBA Live 2005 that a slider for Pro Hop effectiveness was added.

Thanks for reading!

Trying to jog my memory on the subject of hop steps, but I remember hop step dunks were a problem in either 2K11 or 2K13, at least with the CPU. I always hated playing Miami because LeBron and Wade were unstoppable with their animations.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Retro Basketball Gaming Ideas

July 7th: 5 Retro Basketball Gaming Ideas

The preview season for NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18 isn't quite in full swing yet, and although the 2017 NBA offseason is underway, a lot of the big names are already off the board. There are Summer League games to catch of course, but I expect that right now, a lot of basketball gamers are choosing to hit the virtual hardwood. Whether it's LIVE or 2K Pro-Am, MyTEAM, MyCAREER, or perhaps a new MyLEAGUE or MyGM game with updated rosters, we're finding ways to get our basketball fix while we wait for news on the upcoming video games, and the start of a brand new season.

Of course, you may be looking for a change of pace, especially if you're feeling a tad nostalgic, or a little bit burned out on the most recent games. To that end, you may want to dust off an old favourite, perhaps picking up where you left off in an old saved game, or possibly engaging in a little Achievement/Trophy hunting. On the other hand, if you're looking for something new to do with a classic game, there's a lot of fun to be had if you get a little creative, and enjoy "What If?" scenarios. If you're looking for a little inspiration, I have five retro basketball gaming ideas to suggest.

July 14th: 5 Lost Official Downloads for Basketball Games

In our community, we know the pain of lost files. Mods, especially big projects, have been hosted all over the place throughout the years. As a result of sites being closed down and files being deleted from free hosting services after a period of inactivity, we've lost a lot of releases, especially from the early days. We've salvaged and re-uploaded files whenever possible, but there are a lot of mods that are seemingly gone for good. Of course, in theory, it is possible to create new versions of those mods which may be just as good as, or even better than the originals. Unfortunately, that isn't the case with official downloads, such as patches and downloadable content.

Just as we've tried to preserve our database of unofficial patches and mods over the years, we've also done our best to keep a repository of official downloads. If you browse our Downloads database, you'll find a bunch of the old official patches for NBA Live on PC, as well as demos, manuals, and so on. There are some official downloads that we haven't been able to salvage though, which means if you don't already have a copy of them installed or backed up somewhere, you're out of luck. This week's Five is a list of five official downloads that have been lost to time...at least as far as I'm aware.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Overpowered Badges in NBA 2K17

Postby Andrew on Fri Jul 21, 2017 7:17 pm

July 21st: 5 Overpowered Badges in NBA 2K17

Badges have become an important gameplay mechanic in NBA 2K. Like their predecessors, Signature Skills, they provide players with additional traits and abilities in order to realistically represent their performance and playing style. They cover a range of offensive and defensive abilities, as well as mental traits. If you're playing MyCAREER, 2K Pro-Am, or MyPARK, attaining Badges is absolutely crucial if you want your player to be as effective as possible. In NBA 2K17, a Gold or Hall of Fame level Badge makes a huge difference in being able to finish in traffic, knock down long threes, thread the needle on difficult passes, and so on.

As I mentioned in my Wayback Wednesday retrospective on Freestyle Superstars, concepts such as Badges represent continued innovation in terms of differentiating between players beyond their common ratings, and representing individual styles of play. While Badges have generally yielded more realistic results than Freestyle Superstars, at times they can be just as cheesy in their own right. A few Badges in NBA 2K17 are definitely overpowered, and could stand to be fine tuned for NBA 2K18. These aren't the only problematic Badges, of course, but they are five prominent examples that immediately come to mind for me.

July 28th: 5 Biggest Improvements in Basketball Games

After I grumbled about the current state of the preview season at the beginning of the week, we ended up getting the first NBA 2K18 screenshots, and a ton of exciting information about MyLEAGUE and MyGM. Although I stand by my comparisons to the way previews were handled in years gone by, and my point about EA Sports' missed opportunity to keep hyping NBA Live 18, it does seem as though this year's preview season is finally getting into gear. As I said, the news we've just received regarding improvements to MyLEAGUE and MyGM is exciting, and hopefully the good news will keep rolling out for both basketball games in the coming weeks.

Needless to say, for all the promising tidbits we'll hear, there'll be a healthy amount of scepticism. It's understandable, because both NBA Live and NBA 2K have their own frustrating legacy issues, some of which have been bothering basketball gamers for many years. Of course, with new releases coming out every year, it can be difficult to appreciate just how much basketball games have improved over time. Even though we still have valid complaints, basketball games have indeed come a long way since their early predecessors. Let's take a look at the aspects of basketball gaming that have seen the most progress; the biggest improvements in basketball games, if you will.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 More Random Basketball Game Facts

August 4th: 5 More Random Basketball Game Facts

If you enjoy trivia, raise your hand! I'm going to pretend that I actually see people either raising their hands or keeping them down, and then assume that everyone's hands are in fact raised. That way, I can say of course everyone enjoys trivia! In all seriousness, it's fair to say that most people enjoy hearing an interesting fact or two about one of their hobbies or interests, and in our community, that may well refer to a favourite basketball game. From Easter Eggs to unusual facts and figures, there's some interesting basketball video game trivia that we can talk about.

As you've no doubt gleaned from the title, this is actually a sequel article to a Friday Five column that I posted a few years back. Now, they say that sequels are never as good as, or better than the originals - with a few noteworthy exceptions, of course - but with all the basketball games that have been released over the years, this is a topic that could probably become a series. As such, I'll probably revisit it again down the road, but for now, let's take a look at five more random basketball game facts that hopefully at least a few of you won’t have heard, and will be interested to discover.

I had Hangtime on snes so I've played it a ton but I don't know why I've never noticed shaq's absence from the game. I understood why Jordan was missing but the Lakers roster was a bit lacking for sure

He was absent from the original Jam games too, though from memory he was in an early version of the original, and has leftover data hidden in some of the other commercially released versions.

August 11th: 5 Basketball Games I'm Oddly Nostalgic For

We each have our all-time favourite basketball games. Even when they've been surpassed by new titles, it's natural to feel nostalgic towards old favourites. In the best case scenario, some of them may still hold up reasonably well, and be fun to play years later. As far as the sim-oriented basketball games are concerned, my list would include NBA Live 95, NBA Live 96, NBA Live 2000, NBA Live 2004, NBA Live 2005, NBA Live 06, and now that a few years have passed, NBA 2K11, NBA 2K12, and NBA 2K13. In terms of arcade basketball games, there's NBA Jam Tournament Edition, NBA Street Homecourt, and more recently, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.

I'm nostalgic for those titles because they rank among my all-time favourites, but then there are also basketball games that I feel an affinity for, even though they wouldn't make my personal top five or ten. Some of those games are quite flawed, or at the very least haven't aged too well, yet there's something that draws me to them. Sometimes it's the general atmosphere, sometimes it's an ultimately inconsequential detail such as the soundtrack, and sometimes it has more to do with when they came out and where I was at in my life at the time. Whatever the case may be, these are five basketball games that I'm oddly nostalgic for, given the circumstances.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 More Basketball Game Features Ahead of Their Time

August 18th: 5 More Basketball Game Features Ahead of Their Time

I guess I'm in the mood for sequels at the moment. After following up an older Friday Five with another list of random basketball game facts a couple of weeks ago, I've got another Part 2 column for you today. Back in October of last year, I talked about five basketball game features that were ahead of their time. Since the list is obviously much longer than just those five, and we're in the midst of learning about the new additions and innovations in this year's games, I thought I'd take the opportunity to discuss five more basketball game features that were ahead of their time when they made their debut.

Like I said in my previous column, it can be surprising to see how long ago it was that certain features made their basketball game debut. Conversely, it's also somewhat disheartening when you remember that some of them can't be found in more recent titles. On a more positive note, some features and gameplay mechanics have definitely been enhanced since they were first implemented, or paved the way for similar and ultimately superior concepts. With that in mind, here are five basketball game features that demonstrated great foresight and technological achievement.

3 team trades were great for keeping regular rosters up to date, but in franchise mode was useless since you couldn't facilitate trades between 2 CPU teams

Yeah, that was an issue. It was definitely limiting, but you could use it to get deals to work under the cap, if you were creative enough.

August 25th: 5 Changes I'd Make To The NLSC & Community

Tomorrow marks my sixteenth anniversary as webmaster/administrator of the NLSC. I took over the site from Tim on August 26th 2001, a little less than two months before my seventeenth birthday. In other words, at this point I've basically been running the site for half of my life, which is kind of an overwhelming thought to be honest! I've had my ups and downs during that time - personally, professionally, and with the NLSC itself - but I don't regret taking the gig for a minute. It's given me a lot of creative satisfaction, fascinating insight into one of my favourite hobbies, and some tremendous opportunities.

Like a lot of people, I often look at milestones and anniversaries as an opportunity to reflect and take stock of things. It doesn't pay to dwell too much on the past, but no matter what you're doing, it's important to learn from experience. One of my goals is to keep the NLSC relevant and maintain a certain level of quality, while also looking to get even better. I'd like to think that I've had some success in that regard, but at the same time, there's still work to be done. I may be covering some familiar ground here, but as I look forward to bigger and better things, here are five changes that I'd like to make to the NLSC and our corner of the basketball gaming community.

September 1st: 5 Teams To Use in Franchise Modes This Year

We're just a couple of weeks away from the release of NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18! Although I anticipate spending time with modes like MyCAREER, The One, 2K Pro-Am, MyTEAM, and Ultimate Team, I'm also looking forward to returning to my roots as a franchise gamer. Given its incredible depth, MyLEAGUE will likely be my mode of choice, but I'm still undecided as to which team I'll use. My beloved Chicago Bulls are naturally always an option, but with the team entering a rebuilding phase, they're not exactly the most appealing squad. I can't help but think back to my attempts to play Franchise Mode with the Ron Mercer-led Bulls in NBA Live 2001!

MyLEAGUE does offer the flexibility of controlling multiple teams, switching control of teams, and of course, creating a brand new expansion team. However, I must admit that I'd personally prefer to take control of one franchise, and a real NBA team at that. I can't rule out trying to make things work with the Bulls, but there are quite a few interesting possibilities heading into the 2018 season. If you're looking for a team that can be competitive out of the gate, but also provide options in terms of wheeling and dealing, here are five teams that you may want to consider using in the franchise modes of NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18.

September 8th: 5 Teams to Rebuild in Franchise Modes This Year

Last week, I discussed some of the most appealing options in terms of teams to use in this year's franchise modes. This week, I'm looking at some of the more challenging options, in the form of teams that are currently rebuilding. Admittedly a couple of the teams that I mentioned last week are in rebuilding phases themselves, but they also happen to have a bit more talent on their rosters, including players with definite superstar potential. The teams I'm focusing on this time around generally aren't quite as talented, but still present some interesting scenarios for franchise gamers.

Assuming control of a rebuilding team in a franchise mode can be an unusual experience. Depending on your skill on the sticks, lottery-bound teams can greatly overachieve, even pulling off unlikely championship victories in year one. Of course, you'll certainly have your work cut out for you, and the rosters of teams who are bottoming out or trying to claw their way back to respectability aren't always fun to play with. At the same time, the challenge they present can be an enjoyable change of pace. With that in mind, let's take a look at five teams that you can try to rebuild in the franchise modes of NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18.

Re: The Friday Five: 5 Hopes for the 2018 Basketball Gaming Season

September 15th: 5 Hopes for the 2018 Basketball Gaming Season

As I noted earlier today, with the release of NBA Live 18 and NBA 2K18, a brand new season of basketball gaming is now underway! My pre-order of NBA Live 18 downloaded a couple of days ago and then unlocked at midnight Australian Eastern Time, so I stayed up quite late playing the game and sharing some initial impressions on Twitter. As of this writing, the day one patch for the PlayStation 4 version of NBA 2K18 has just finished installing, and I've almost finished downloading the PC version on Steam as well. I anticipate that I have a big weekend of basketball gaming ahead of me.

With any luck, we're all in for twelve months filled with fun basketball gaming experiences. I've felt optimistic about this year's releases through most of the preview season, and I came away from both the NBA Live 18 demo and The Prelude to NBA 2K18 with some positive impressions. I'd like to spend more time with the full versions of both games before I offer up some in-depth impressions (and eventually, comprehensive reviews), but as I look ahead to the 2018 season of basketball gaming, I do have a few hopes for the experiences that will be on offer in this year's releases.
