I don't know what you game style, but I always play with the Magic, and with DK's rosters I can put up very realistic results with T-Mac. He's always "the man" of the team, sometimes reaching 30 points. I play Superstar, Unlocked, 8 mins and CPU shot (as for DK's recommendations).

Maybe locking on T-Mac causes some strange behaviour by the (flawed) game. :?

DK, thanks for the great tweaks you provided us!
The only problem is that I´m still getting too many blocks. How can I fix it?

Tue Jan 07, 2003 8:27 am

DK and others - Do you guys run plays? and if so which ones? I need some advice on how to hit medium range shots. Currently all I'm doing now is running the pick and roll play and shooting it when I'm open but the damn thing just will never go in.

Tue Jan 07, 2003 8:47 am

I have been playing on AllStar with a new tweaked roster with 11 min quarters and getting great results.

DK, is this the next update to your roster? I'd love to try a tweak at 11-min...All-Star especially...haha I can't win on SuperStar with your latest tweak. I come damn close, but then they always pull away. Alright, thanks for your work!

Rebounds look really good! Losing the Offensive Boards by 2, and then winning by 2.

I'm still working on it but for realistic results when you play you have to play like a real team would. I don't take advantage of the steal attempt flaw by the CPU in the post or try to dunk with Pierce every play by freestyling, I just try to run the clock a little and screen and motion for the open shots.

Kobe and Shaq both went for 20+ but I held them to a really bad 3rd quarter (6-19) anthough Shaq still managed to score 10 in that quarter. A 3pt play by Vlade helped sel the game with a minute left.

I may release a beta version of this roster for feedback becasue this is a completely different kind of roster I have here.

I was leading at the half, the game was tied in the 3rd quarter, and they blew me out in the fourth making 75% of their shots.(originally, the lakers were well below 50%) Derek Fisher kept braking down Armstrong and getting easy baskets and several threes in the third quarter.(all contested threes) McGrady had his best game yet scoring 41 points off of 17 for 29 shooting 59%, he also was 6/6 from the line and added 13 rebounds, a block, and 7 assists. T-Mac was only 1/5 three point shooting, all WIDE OPEN, in fact, he air-balled in open three and a uncontested 20 foot jumper. Amazingly enough, I held Shaq to 5 of 10 shooting(10pts), it was the reserves that killed me. Kobe was held to 9 total made shots and ended with 22. George and Bryant got a couple easy baskets when I attempted to take a charge and they just mowed over me then dunked/layed it in.

With only 3 turnovers myself, the rest of the team either threw the ball away or into the hands of a player who wore a purple shirt. Grant Hill missed a couple dunks and inside shots, Humphrey was 0-2 from the field and both misses were off dunks. Armstrong connected on just 2 of 10, he came up with nothing out of 5 threes.

I guess I should play unlocked from now on, I just can't stand my PG letting his man get to the basket so easy.(it's even more of a joke on the fast brakes) Overall I'm thinking AI transition D needs some serious overhall. Also, the computer on my team needs to stop going for the loose balls as they go out of bounds as I get lots of needless turnovers like that.

One of my turnovers was rediculous. McGrady was dribbling around the top of the 3pt line, he passed to Garrity in the corner and it was picked off. The defender who was guarding him had managed to grap the ball when it was about an inch and a quarter(screenwise) away from him! That's like a five foot reach in real life!

Hey DK, i have downloaded your roster from 28th of December. If i try your new beta, what about the players i created with your other roster? Can i keep them? What about the franchise i already started with your other roster?

Can i simply upgrade to your new roster?

You lose all changes made

Hrmpf .. then i think i wont try your beta, sorry. Cause i want to play my franchise at least till the end of the first season.

Atm i am playing at 8 minutes per quarter and get realistic results. When you have managed to tweak the rosters in a way, where you can get realistic results in 12 per quarter, tell me :D. Then i think i'll give it a try.

But anyway, you have done great work so far. Just have a look at my Hornets Franchise Thread in the franchise area. I had some great games so far, and i am only 3 games into a 82 game season :).

Oh my! I finally got those lakers, and good. My first game played unlocked so far in 2003, and as you can see 21 turnovers tells that story.

The defense was absolutely horrible, I got some very easy shots off. Noticing that, I held back on the threes and took the game inside where I dominated. Kemp had about 15 points and nearly all from the low post. McGrady ended with 27 and 11 assists.

This time, because I could player switch, I was able to stop Fisher from getting anything he wanted. I quickly fouled out Armstrong in the 2nd quarter though because of being overly aggressive in challenging his shots.

The assists count clearly indicates the computer did not deal with my pick and roll well at all. I ran the Pick and Roll like TRL plays the Backstreet Boys.

The only reason the Lakers FG % was lower than 50 is because I held Fisher to 3 of 14 shooting and 0 for 8 threes with my tight D. Rick Fox was shooting like Ray Allen in this game making 7 of 10 shots and 4 of 6 threes.

I really felt the tension in this game as the score was close at the half. I quickly pulled away with a huge win when the Lakers shot 5 for 17 in the fourth and by handing out more dimes then the lakers total made FGs. My next opponent will be New Jersey, they handed me my worst loss ever in any Live game I have played so it's payback time.

I didn't go to shaq TOO much (he had 15) This patch definitely played nicely from my end. Nice and even shot distribution. The cpu didn't go down low often except to Martin occasionally. The inside game definitely not dominant like before (I had dec 16 patch from DK)

Has anyone else had the problem of having your starters pulled by auto sub near the end of the game even though it's not a blowout? I use auto sub because I don't want to break the flow, but it annoys me when I'm only up by a couple of points and my starters are taking a break.

Keep up the good work!!

Wed Jan 08, 2003 9:13 am

I played with your beta rosters Orlando vs NJ for three quarters (Superstar, 8 mins, CPU shot) and I noticed this: PGs lose a lot more balls with freestyle, and I'm not talking about difficult moves, but just crossovers under your legs while moving down the court (not pressed by defense)... that's fine for Miller, but Vaughn or even Armstrong can't lose this kind of balls. I noticed more thightness in defense, but Kidd can and K-Mart can go to the basket whenever they want. NJ scored a whooping 70% in the first quarter (the play away), and after 3 quarters they were still over 60%. I think I can play defense, because with previous rosters I've never seen a 60% FG% in 16 season games.

Ok, maybe NJ is one of the most difficult opponents out there, but I can have a more reasonable match with the previous rosters (28th of December).

I'll try with other teams, but at first glance I think that the previous rosters are better for my style of game.

I'll let you know about my next games. Thank you for your tweakings DK.

I don't know why you can't stop the CPU from driving, whenever Kobe drove of of a pick or isolated and drove I just brought over Vlade and I got in the take charge position, this stopped him and he usually took a bad jumper, passed out or got called for the charge (Of course he was killing me to begin with but I adjusted)

I went ahead early so my reserves got more time. I tried setting up some open threes and it didn't go well, I even missed the few open ones I did get.

Kidd had just a bad game with 8 turnovers. He put in 31 but from 8-24 shooting and 5-15 threes. Again, no match for my D. Still, I got a lot of cheap shooting fouls I made trying to pressure him after rolling off a pick and shooting threes. Thus, he beat me down from the line instead sinking 10-12 on the night.

In this game, rather than having a one-sided inside game, I was able to knock down some jumpers which was very satisfying.

I was phoneix, I only lost cause I couldn't hit any medium to long range shots. No three pointers either, which was strange cause I usually can hit a few of those. I made about 10 medium range shots out of about 40, and absolutely no long range 2's(had some wide open shots too).

Thanks, this is going to stay pretty set except for some dribble things I'm looking to do.

When will the final come out?

To me, this beta is a step down for me atleast from the other roster patch. The FG%'s are a lot higher and the overall feel is worse to me. I just tried playing 2 games, and I quit in disgust in the middle of the 2nd quarter both times. Fouls are insane. I was called for 16 fouls, to the other team's 8 and there was still half the 2nd quarter left. Every time they go down low, and I jump to contest, it's a foul. Also, I hate when I jump to contest a 3, they call fouls, and give them 3 shots. Free throws are way too uneven at times. Geteting up on your man playing defense is pointless, cause they can still execute their crossover and spin moves and get to the hoop. Yeah you can take the charge, but what's fun about taking a charge every other time down the court, why can't they just be stoppped and be forced to pass it. I hate it when the PG dribbles straight up, takes a 3, without even looking around...happens 3-5 times a game...maybe more. Maybe it's just me, but this newer roster is a downgrade...

The fouls are definately not weird for me but the spin crossover and PG shoot first mentality thing can only be fixed by EA and we all know that. This is why this is a beta and I'm just trying all things because it was really starting to bother me how guy would always miss outside of 10 FT. Try playing with the old roster and look at the shooting chart at the end of the game, It will be all red Xs outside the paint besides 3s.

I probably would have given up by now but I have no other games that I could play with interest right now so I keep trying.

I gt some good news I think. I made quckness in the 80-90 range and speed in the 50-60 range. The game moves at about (maybe little faster) the same speed as Live 2000.

Now for the best part. I played a Phi vs LAC(me) game and was able to stop them from driving to the hoop very well. Granted I only controlled the PGs or PF/C (I always did this and it never worked but now it does) and the CPU controlled defender can usually hold his own but I would help and double every once in a while and players could not drive like they owned the place. On offense things move a lot slower and I noticed it is a lot harder to get to the bucket, but you get abit more time off screens which is nice.

I might put up this beta tonight as soon as I am sure it is not a fluke.

Well i´ve tried your beta and i´ve found good and bad things.

Good:
You´ve managed to make the cpu miss some threes when being alone for an open shoot, when before with just an inch of distance from the defender they could hit a lot.

It´s a bit easier to find a man with an open shot chance, because sometimes cpu players help more their mates and live a player alone (if the pass is not intercepted).

Now you can put in some jumpers from long distance, that you couldn´t before, this makes it more realistic.

Bad:
The defence i think is worse than in previous patches, it is not difficult to get an easy basket.(with the beta i get higher scores, with the same mintes per cuarter)

Still too many pass inerceptions, while in previous nba lives these interceptions didn´t exist, and this made it easier to find a good shoot position, but now you can´t make a pass with a little risk because it´ll probably get intercepted.

Although now it is a bit easier, it still too difficult to find an open shoot, a good shoot position, due too the interceptions, and to the poor movement of the players(not the one you´re controlling, but your teammates), who for example never come from a pick and roll to recieve a pass a make a shoot, or when you try loose your defender by going near other players and hoping that your defender gets stuck with one of them because they get in his way (like a no intentional pick and roll from other player) and so you can make a confortable shoot. ( i don´t know if you´ve understood this last example, sorry but my english is limited as you can notice). Both examples could happen more less in previous nba lives.

It would make it more relaistic if getting to the paint or near the paint wasn´t so easy, and so you would find it better to make a jumper.

Most players have a quite high FG% when being in the paint or near it, this gives no feeling of a need to go for your superstars to make more shoots, as many other teammates can do that work too.

It´s difficult to stop good players to score on one on one situations (i don´t refer only in fast breaks), if they get near the basket is quite hard to stop them (in my last game i couldn´t stop francis from going to the basket and scoring, he was 16/21 in FG.)

The movements of the superstars are great, for example iverson going for the lay up , or t-mac going for the dunk when their defender is in front of them, but not all the players should do them(or at least very few times), and not all the time (even the superstars).

I know there´s more bad than good things, but it is all a constructive and not destructive opinion.

And i also know that some of the things i´ve said can not be fixed(except by EA, of course)

In general the patch looks good, but i think it needs more work.

And keep up your work like that, because if it weren´t have been for your rosters, i would also have given up this game.

Hope my feedback is helpfull.

Alright here is the 2nd beta.

You will notice the players are a lot slower when compared to other versions, but just play with it and you will start to enjoy it.
