NBA RETURNS TO SEATTLE

After years of advocating, protesting, discussing, and negotiating, NBA commissioner Adam Silver has finally given the nod to overturn his predecessor’s previously issued statement that if the Sonics leave, the NBA will never return to Seattle.

Recognizing that the city has always been a great basketball city, the league has agreed to a deal that will allow the investment group led by Chris Hansen, who has been actively pursuing for the return of the franchise (previously at the expense at the Kings) since 2013, to own an expansion franchise in Seattle, under the condition that a new arena will be constructed as soon as possible. A deal has already been reached with the city to build the new stadium.

“It’s a very exciting time, I’m sure Seattle fans are as excited as I am at the return of the Sonics.” Hansen said.

The team will play in the KeyArena while the new stadium is being constructed. An expansion draft will be held for the Sonics and the other to-be-named expansion franchise.

Due to this move, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be realigned to the Southwest division.

SECOND EXPANSION TEAM ANNOUNCED: CHICAGO GETS SECOND TEAM

Lakers and Clippers, Knicks and Nets, Giants and Jets, Yankees and Mets, Dodgers and Angels, Cubs and White Sox.

Some might cry foul, but there is no question that the biggest market cities will always have multiple teams of the same sport. If nothing else, the cross-town rivalry alone makes the league that much more interesting (and in some cases, more competitive).

It is in that spirit that the NBA has granted the second expansion franchise for this upcoming season to an ownership group headed by Illinois native and former Suns owner Jerry Colangelo the ownership rights to have his team in Chicago. Colangelo, 76, is an alumni of University of Illinois and began his career in professional basketball with the Chicago Bulls in various front office roles before moving on to the expansion Suns franchise in 1968, eventually becoming owner in 1988, and was named executive of the year on four occasions (77, 82, 90, 94). Recently retired NBA player Kevin Garnett, who played his high school ball at Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, will possess a minority stake in the team.

In a somewhat controversial statement, Colangelo blasted the current management of the Bulls when explaining his desire to bring a second team to his home state.

“Chicago is very dear to my heart, and it pains me to see Chicago basketball being run into the ground. The people deserve better than that and this is what I aim to do” Colangelo said.

Colangelo is expected to step down from his current position as advisor to the 76ers.

The team name and branding will be revealed at a later date. Unlike the Lakers and Clippers, the new team will not be sharing the United Center with the Bulls, but instead play in the new Chicago Stadium, which finished construction earlier this year.

EXPANSION DRAFT RULES SET

Details of the expansion draft have been released by the NBA. Adam Silver announced earlier this evening.

The rules used will be the same ones that were in play when Charlotte was awarded an expansion franchise in 2004, with 8 players being protected on each team. Only one player may be picked by either team during the draft, and the draft will be run on a serpent style for 13 rounds.

The Seattle Sonics have won the coin toss and will pick first.

NBA EXPANSION FRANCHISE TO BE NAMED CHICAGO SHARKS

Image

Chicago, IL - The NBA’s 32nd franchise, and the second in Chicago, will be named the Chicago Sharks, it was announced today by owner Jerry Colangelo. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, and minority owner Kevin Garnett joined Colangelo as the team’s name and logo were revealed to the fans for the first time at the unveiling event hosted at Wrigley Field.

“We are grateful for the Cubs organization in lending us this venue and their support for a second basketball franchise in the city of Chicago. It is with great honor and pride that I present to you the new face of Chicago basketball, the Chicago Sharks.” said Colangelo.

The Cubs, of course, are the cross-town rivals to the Chicago White Sox, owned by Jerry Reinsdorf, who also owns the Chicago Bulls.

“The Sharks name symbolizes fierceness, authority, determination, and uncompromising competition, which is exactly what we want to possess here in Chicago. We will be aggressive and competitive, and will not settle for anything less than being at the top of the food chain.” said Garnett, who was also named the team’s first President of Basketball Operations.

The team’s colors will consist of blue, white, and black.

Other names said to have been considered included Blizzard (reference to the city’s winters) and Stags (a nod to the Chicago Stags of 1946).

2017 EXPANSION DRAFT RESULTS: SONICS TAKE JOE JOHNSON FIRST OVERALL

Image

Less than two months after signing with the Jazz, Johnson will be moving to Seattle, as the Sonics opted to select the 7 time all star wing with their first selection in the 2017 NBA Expansion Draft.

Johnson (35), will be joined in Seattle by former teammate Deron Williams, as well as other notable names such as Warriors sixth man Shaun Livingston, and former second overall pick Michael Beasley.

The Sonics opted to go with more veteran players and star power in the draft, although they did mix in a few youngsters such as sophomore player Norman Powell (23) of the Raptors, as well as rookies Malik Beasley (19), and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (21).

On the other hand, the Chicago Sharks opted to go with Aussie point guard Patrick Mills (28) from the San Antonio Spurs with their first selection. Joining Mills will be his former Spurs teammate Boban Marjanovic (28), as well as journeyman wing Gerald Green (30), and defensive specialists in the form of Tony Allen (34) and Thabo Sefolosha (32).

Full results of the draft can be viewed below.

Yeah, that was definitely a factor. Although I'd have to admit a large reason was due to the unavailability of a preset logo that represents a blizzard

Will release the court design and jersey designs soon!

Kevin wrote:Nice logo and color choice. Did you make it or are those 2k presets?

Thanks man! I'm rather hopeless with graphic designs so yeah I used the custom blank presets that applies your chosen team colours. I did have to do a bit of editing to get the logo to be transparent so I can put it on a black background on the banner though!

Yeah I've noticed that as well, give or take one to two guys, the algorithm seems pretty (almost overly) consistent. Would be nice to have variations in that sense, but it is a new feature so not a biggie (Y)

SHARKS UNVEIL UNIFORM DESIGNS

Image

The Chicago Sharks today have unveiled the team's uniforms for their inaugural season.

The home and away jerseys were modeled by Tony Allen, who was freshly selected by the Sharks in the recent Expansion Draft.

The designs featured a clean, simple look, and features a primary color (blue for away, white for home) with solid stripes on the sides.

Fans are now able to purchase replica jerseys at ChicagoSharks.com

Alongside their jersey designs, the Chicago Sharks have also unveiled the team's playing court at the New Chicago Stadium.

The court, which was revealed online on ChicagoSharks.com and across all the team’s social media platforms this morning, features the team’s primary logo at center court, is built on a light colored parquet floor. Both baselines have the words “Chicago Sharks”, and the team logo is also featured on the inside of the three point line on both ends of the floor. The new Chicago Stadium logo also appears near center court on either side.

SHARKS HIRE DAVID BLATT AS HEAD COACH

Image

It’s official. The Chicago Sharks have named David Blatt as the first head coach in franchise history; it was announced at a press conference by minority owner and president of basketball operations Kevin Garnett. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. It is believed to be a multi-year deal, however.

“We are excited to have a coach at the caliber of David Blatt, he has had a fantastic track record of winning basketball games both in the NBA and in Europe, and will certainly instill a solid foundation here in Chicago.” said Garnett

Blatt interviewed for NBA vacancies in New York, Sacramento and Houston. He had expressed desires to remain in the NBA as a head coach following his dismissal from Cleveland.

“I’m glad to be back in the NBA, and I’m glad to stay within the division. I have great familiarity here, obviously, and I look forward to build something with the Sharks franchise.” said Blatt

Blatt (57), was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 to January 2016, where he guided the Cavaliers to an 83-40 record in 123 games and made the 2015 NBA Finals, where Cleveland fell short of the title in 6 games. He was subsequently fired before the All Star break the following season despite a 30-11 record at the time.

Prior to the NBA, Blatt had guided the Maccabi Tel Aviv to the 2014 Euroleague title, and was named Euroleague coach of the year, among other honors in Europe.

Creating an expansion team in a big city that already has an established team is a cool idea. It adds a rivalry aspect to your game that you wouldn't get if you based your franchise in, say, Las Vegas or Omaha.

Blatt is a great choice to be the Sharks' first ever coach (Y)

SHARKS SIGN BRIANTE WEBER

The Chicago Sharks have signed free agent guard Briante Weber to a one year deal.

The deal, believed to be worth $1.47M, will have a team option for a second year.

An undrafted free agent out of VCU, Weber spent the past season playing for Sioux Falls, Miami's D-League affiliate, and ended with averages of 10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He also spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies on a 10 day contract, in which he averaged 4.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals over 6 games played.

A defensive ball hawk in his college career, Weber was designated to the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team on multiple occasions, and also earned the title as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year for three straight seasons. He led the nation in steals through his junior season in 2014 with a 3.46 average, and was 12 steals away from being the all-time steals leader of the NCAA when he tore both his ACL and MCL in his senior year.

WORLD PEACE AGREES TO DEAL WITH SHARKS

Metta World Peace (Formerly known as Ron Artest) has agreed to sign with the Chicago Sharks to a one year deal.

The deal is believed to be for $1.66M.

Drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1999, the former NBA defensive player of the year signed with the Lakers during the 2015 offseason after playing in China and Italy, and possesses career averages of 13.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game over 16 seasons.

ANDRE MILLER AGREE TO SIGN WITH WIZARDS

The Washington Wizards have agreed to terms with veteran guard Andre Miller on a one year deal for the veteran minimum.

Miller (40), ended last season with the San Antonio Spurs after a contract buyout with Minnesota.

The 17 year veteran had previously spent two seasons with the Wizards and holds career averages of 12.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists.

SIXERS SIGN LANCE STEPHENSON

Lance Stephenson has agreed to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Stephenson has been a free agent after the Memphis Grizzlies declined their team option on his contract.
Stephenson signed a three-year, $27 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets in 2014.

Nah that's alright. Blue's my second favorite colour due to my football club Chelsea FC so all good there (Yep, the sports induced bias is always there somehow)

Cheers mate! Yeah loving the rivalry aspect and not only with the Bulls too since Central has always been so heated.

Blatt is highly underrated imo, they did him dirty in Cleveland.
