The Young Kats from the Bronx

Postby megarover on Thu Oct 29, 2015 5:03 am

The days of the Philadelphia 76ers are gone.........in their place the NBA is introducing a new team to Bronx, New York. If you are thinking these Kats will be a cakewalk like the 76ers of recent years you'll be surprised. New Owner Randy Griffin has completely cut the previous roster and even issued a statement declaring "Opponents be wary because you have been formally been invited to the Lion's Den."

Young Kats Ready For Their Inaugural Season in the NBA
Written by Dave Wright

After releasing the previous roster Bronx management have done the unthinkable and replaced them with a team filled with players without a single speck of NBA Experience. As expected the bold move has been met with harsh criticism throughout the league. However Lions Owner Randy Griffin has insisted that their team will surprise thanks to three players in particular. A flashy 6'5 combo guard out of LSU, a fierce big with a habit of throwing down rim rattling dunks at center and a stoic post player who shows flashes of greatness. Whether or not these young Cats are as good as Griffin claims has yet to be proven. But it sure will be crowded in town especially with the Nets and Knicks competing in the same division. Let the Battle for New York begin!!!

And without further ado get a look at your Lions

Lions hire former All-Star Center as Head Coach
Written by Dave Wright

The Bronx have continued to surprise after news was released that the Lions had signed former Houston All-Star Yao Ming. Coach Brett Brown was among the first people released by the Lions and the Lions have desperately been looking for someone to take over that role. Rumors had been reported of negotiations being done with former Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau but talks fell through earlier in the week. Ming was a 8x All Star as a member of the Houston Rocket and was known during his playing days for his towering 7'6 height. Without a coaching history it is difficult to figure out why the Lions made such a strange move but perhaps he can teach a thing or two to the plethora of young bigs the Bronx have on their roster. After all the 35 year old Chinese native will be by far the oldest person in the young Kats huddle.

Lions Sign Sharpshooter Jarell Eddie
Written by Dave Wright

The Lions have signed Virginia Tech standout Jarell Eddie to a one year deal. Head Coach Yao Ming looked at add some depth on the wings and set his sights on acquiring Eddie. More importantly though the swingman will add some much needed shooting to the team. The former Hokie was a recent winner of the NBA D-League 3 point contest and is known for his ability to light it up from deep. This will be his first stint in the NBA after going undrafted in 2014 though he isn’t likely to get much playing time.

Lions make a pair of trades
Written by Dave Wright

A day before their first game of the season in Boston the Lion have made a couple of trades. The first trade was with the Knicks to acquire point guard Jerian Grant in exchange for Glen Davis, Aron Brooks and a future 2nd round pick. New York also sent a pair of future first round picks in the deal to sweeten the pot. With the addition of Grant the Lions looked to trade highflying point guard Spud Webb. Bronx Head Coach Yao Ming had been very interested in Wizard swingman Kelly Oubre and Washington happened to be looking for a guard to help relieve John Wall. The trade was made with both sides adding picks (Bronx sent three and Washington sent one) and the Lions will welcome their new teammates in time for Wednesday’s game at the TD Garden.

Maravich, Mourning lead Bronx to first win as Lions
Written by Dave Wright

If you could describe how the perfect first game as a new franchise should look like it would be the Lion’s matchup with the Celtics Wednesday night. Despite playing with a team full of rookies from their 12th man to the head coach Bronx was able to pick up an impressive 134-114 victory. Pete Maravich and Alonzo Mourning both had a debut for the ages in what could quite easily be the best debut by a rookie duo ever. Maravich had 36 points, 4 rebounds and a dozen assists while taking over in the pivotal fourth quarter. Mourning refused to go let Maravich take all the shine though and put up an impressive statline of 30 points, 14 rebounds and a whopping 10 blocks. His presence at the rim frequently altered or straight up sent packing the shot attempts of various Celtics players. Isaiah Thomas in particular had many encounters with the Georgetown rookie that didn’t end too well for the speedy point guard. He did however dish out twenty assists off his penetration. Lions starting point guard Sam Cassell struggled to stay in front of him throughout the first half.

Maravich and Mourning shouldn’t get all the credit for the win though. The rest of the team was just as impressive. The young Timothy Duncan put up 20 points along with 6 blocks and newly acquired small forward Kelly Oubre Jr had 20 points as well on 10-10 shooting! Lions Head Coach Yao Ming was very impressed with Oubre’s production off the bench and noted how well he finished in transition. Boston guard Avery Bradley led the Celtics with 32 points and Tyler Zeller chipped in 24. The game was tight till the fourth quarter when the Lions went on a brutal run to end the game. The Lions head home for their home opener this Friday in the Jungle.

Pistol Pete comes through late in Lions home opener
Written by Dave Wright

It was only natural that in their first game in their new arena the game would come down to the finals seconds. The Lion's Den will hopefully have finishes as thrilling as this for years to come. The Bronx crowd was deafening right from the opening tip and courtside Bronx owner Randy Griffin sat with a pair of notable celebrities. The score was tied in impressive fashion 95 apiece with 8 seconds to go after a clutch jumper from Utah guard Alec Burks. Lions Head Coach Yao Ming promptly called a timeout and proceeded to call up a play for the Pistol. With Tim Duncan inbounding the ball the Lions caught Alec Burks overplaying Maravich who cut to the basket for the tough lay in over Rudy Gobert. The score left three seconds on the clock giving Utah one final shot at winning the game. Unfortunately Gordon Hayward's jumper at the buzzer was off and the Bronx held on for the win. Maravich finished the night with 24 points, 4 rebounds and 12 assists. It is difficult to believe the young man is in his first year in the league when looking at him on the court. "We all knew he was getting the ball when they tied the game" remarked Lions Center Alonzo Mourning.

A remarkable effort by the Jazz sparked their comeback from down 13 in the 3rd quarter. They trailed most of the game but went on a 8-0 to end the third quarter to trim the lead to one heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth featured back and forth action until the very end with both sides continuously alternating control of the game. Duncan and Mourning combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Bronx and went head to head with the Utah frontcourt. Derrick Favors and Trevor Booker surprisingly played very well in the final period against the youth of the Lions. Bronx doesn't have long to savor their home opener victory before Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers stroll into town. The defending Eastern Conference Champions will be a true test for how good these 2-0 Lions truly are.

Lions Notables
P.Maravich- 24 points, 4 rebounds, 12 assists
T.Duncan- 16 points, 7 rebounds
S.Cassell- 14 points, 3 assists
A.Mourning- 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks

Jazz Notables
G.Hayward- 25 points, 4 assists
A.Burks- 18 points, 4 assists
D.Favors- 16 points, 12 rebounds
T.Burke- 11 points, 15 assists
