They have Greg Smith, who's Thomas Robinson-esque. Good for spot minutes, but not great for anything more than 10.
Jae Crowder had some decent potential, it's too bad they had to give him up. I get it, though.
Brandan Wright is extremely limited, without him eating Greg Smith's minutes, you may see what Smith is capable of.
Jameer Nelson is in a slightly better situation. In Boston, he can mentor the young guards (Smart, Young, Pressey) and step in when necessary, assuming they don't waive him.

Problem with Smith is that he's only 6'9". Somewhat foul-prone too.

Those huge hands, though. Maybe not as athletic as Wright, but he can absorb contact.

Brandan Wright is also 6'9". Difference is Wright is athletic stretch four while Greg has heavier gravity pull.

Statistically they're pretty much identical players. Both are highly efficient, can block shots, shoots from same distance. Wright being 28, is more polished while Greg has just entered his 4th season.

The real loss comes from the fact that Wright incredibly was shooting 75% from the field. But I don't think that was sustainable. You just don't shoot over 75% in this league, you just don't, unless you are going to claim he is going to be the first player to pull it off ever in league history. Greg Smith actually has slightly better career shooting TS% otherwise. Obviously this is a gamble that could pay off well for the Mavericks. Kudos to Cuban for taking this risk. It's clear he wants to get better and win, when lots of other owners would have just sit around and cashed in on a what seemed to be a pretty good season. And this gamble makes sense.

Loss of Jae, Nelson is really nothing btw.

Wright isn't even a stretch four, he can't shoot threes and almost all of his shots are within 10 feet of the basket (97% of his shots Kobe Christ!) he can't even create his own shot or drive to the rim and most of his shots are assisted which are dump off passes when someone penetrates or is near the basket.

Unless he develops a three pointer like Channing Frye or becomes a good defensive player what we saw/see from Wright this season is his ceiling.

now, Celtics have traded all of the players in its 2008 NBA Championship starting lineup.

Celtics have a large spectrum of guards, it won't cause much problem

Can't wait to see this team in action. Rondo should play better than he has been, and he always steps it up in the playoffs - I guess I'm most skeptical about fit. Dallas was the best offensive team in the league, so I'm not convinced adding a PG who can't shoot, and taking away an uber-efficient backup big will make it any better. Greg Smith has put up similar numbers, but in garbage time scenarios. Signing Emeka Okafor or Jermaine O'Neal would be huge - Ray Allen might put them over the top. Still, fit is a concern, as neither Ellis or Rondo are good 3 point shooters, and both need the ball in their hands a lot.

Defensively Rondo is of course a big upgrade over Nelson (as I'm sure many of us on NLSC would be too) but point guards have a limited impact on team defense.

There starting 5 looks incredible on paper, but it'll take some great coaching (which we can count on from Carlisle) and for the players to stay healthy for this team to be a legit contender.

Yep, Ellis/Rondo chemistry will be a key. I'm also skeptical, is the reason why I mentioned they'd be better off with Ellis as a sixth man.

But Wright as explained, is strictly a dunk guy that was overachieving. His numbers imo was bound to go down as season deepens. You probably don't want to rely on that heavily either when things get tighter in the playoffs.

Either way we know Rondo is a system changer guy, good or bad. Gonna be fun to see how he changes the Mavericks culture/system.

Well, yeah his scoring percentage was going to go down since nobody in history has ever cracked 72%. But the guy has averaged 66% since he got to Dallas and all of his numbers are right in line with the rest of his career. And only 33% of his attempts have been dunks this year. Unlike his fellow high percentage scorer, Mr. Chandler, he can actually shoot outside of the circle under the basket. He's more than decent out to 15 or so and out to 10 feet is no problem. Where do you think Anthony Davis operates?

There's a good chance he locks the Celtics into the playoffs now.

benji, Problem is log jam at his position. There's no guarantee the Celtics will go Lakers route with Ed Davis and give tons minutes to Wright. You already got youthful Sullinger, Olynyk, Zeller, and vet Bass. Though Wright is better than any of them, his skillset isn't.

BTW the Celtics don't have a PG again, remember last season when Michael Jordan Crapford played a PG? Yup, Marcus Smart, Bradley will see huge minutes there. Turner's role increases by default which isn't good. Nelson probably isn't in the future plan, Smart is priority. This team might be a playoffs in East, but might as well tank and get that draft pick for Sauru.

Chemistry wise, I just don't see a better fit for Ellis than Rondo. A perfect pass/shoot backourt. This will likely make Ellis a slightly better defender given the fact he won't be looked upon to facilitate.

But people on TNT putting the Mavs as the 1/2 team is ridiculous. Home court, possible, top of the west? If some serious injuries don't happen, I don't think so.
