The first one got done! Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

For the first entry, I’m taking a look at dynamic hair physics in basketball video games. While I was certain this was a recent breakthrough for the genre, I was surprised to find out that I completely missed the first game to feature player hair that wasn’t cemented in place.
Opinions are my own.

I remember a player with a ponytail back in Live 2005 or 2004 had it go up and down during gameplay, but that was about it. I don't see why this can't be implemented when they have cloth physics. Same thing, just slightly different.

benji and I were talking about that, Brian Grant maybe? I thought it was something a patcher did, just making the hair a part of the neck so it animated separately from the head.

I'll have to fire up those games with the default rosters and check that again, along with NBA Live 06 on the 360.

just confirmed that Nash has moving hair in 2K7, couldnt find any other players, and the CATs don't have it though. Looks damn amazing too, much better than Live 06 and Live 14 even. Not in 2K6 or 2K8 tho

So in a nutshell NBA Live 14 is the best game of all-time as it has Dirk Nowitzki moving hair physics.

Screw you Jao, you didn't specify in the article that the gif was from Live 06 so I thought it was from Live 14. Damn it.

And let me correct myself by saying that Live 06 360 version is the best game of all-time as it has Dirk Nowitzki moving hair physics.

When poking around the NBA 2K14 files on PC, you might come across references that only apply to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, and of course the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version which the PC port is based upon. While many of these are expected, there has been one specific reference that I have yet to understand or fully explain within the files of NBA 2K14.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all complaining about the gold swirls and menu equalizers in NBA 2K13, probably because it was only last year. Executive produced by Jay-Z, NBA 2K13 garnered criticism for the presentation elements that were supposedly designed by the man himself. 2K themselves claimed that Jay-Z had his fingerprints all over the game and articles came out about Jay-Z using his star power to get Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley in last year’s game for the Team USA vs Dream Team hype. Aside from the presentation elements and his name on the box, Jay-Z was not included in the game’s celebrity team and was only shown in videogame form in the crowd of Nets games.

Re: Dumb Fact Monday: WTF, Moon in Target Center

Postby JaoSming on Tue Feb 25, 2014 1:30 am

http://www.nba-live.com/dumb-fact-monda ... -the-moon/
While I am talking about playing underneath the Moon in a basketball videogame, for once I am not talking about anything Street related. This may or may not have affected me, because this week’s Dumb Fact Monday has completely confused me. I have no idea why this is in the game or if it is even on purpose. After researching it, I don’t believe this is grounded in any sort of reality or included for accuracy purposes. So please share in my confusion.

Why there is an image of the Moon in the rafters of NBA Live 14′s Target Center?

I also want to remember a moon in NBA Jam for some reason....

i remember seeing it once watching a twolves game on TV. when opponents go to the free throw line, they play a sound of a timberwolf howling (like in NBA Live 10). I guess they encourage fans to howl as well (towards the moon?)

EDIT:

well i tried "target center moon" at first and it was promising with a few seating charts but it was a lot of stuff i didn't want like stuff about target. i thought timberwolves was pretty specific since it's a team name that isn't a common word like "kings" so i just typed in "timberwolves moon" and surprisingly it was the only picture i could find

Wolves howling at the moon. Makes sense. In any case, that's something I never knew before, that's cool that EA included that particular detail.

Re: Dumb Fact Monday: Got NCAA in my NBA

One of my favorite things about getting the PC version of our yearly NBA games is to see what hidden or unused content got left on the game disc. Sometimes there is nothing useful, but NBA 2K10 provided the community with a bunch of hidden files that, along with the initial release of REDitor, kickstarted NBA 2K modding on PC. Hidden in the thousands of game files were a few college gyms that had no business showing up in the yearly NBA 2K game.

Since I haven't had much to do with NBA 2K modding thus far, that one's news to me. Generally speaking though, it is fun to find assets like that dummied out or hidden on the disc, and certainly useful to our community. Looking forward to seeing what other hidden content you talk about in future DFMs.
