I can't wait :applaud: I'm gonna make a separate Steam game slot just for this. That way I can switch from NBA 2K14 to NBA Jam 2K14 easily!

Re: NBA Jam 2k14 - NBA Jam T.E. SNES Update Project

Postby Millertime2325 on Sun Feb 02, 2014 2:19 pm

Spent a good portion of the day editing all the player data. All players are officially edited. I tried to make sure everything was 100% accurate with my spreadsheet, but there's a pretty good chance I made a mistake or two. That's where you guys come in! I'll post a password protected mediafire link or something and send the people who have been keeping up with this topic the password. There are some more things that need to be updated.

Basically, there are some portraits that have some issues, and some could look a little bit neater for the final version. But those will be edited in due time. Right now I'm just worried about making sure the game play is spot on. If you feel the stats or appearances could be better, feel free to let me know! I'm also not opposed to adding more players. I think I have maybe 2 or 3 more that can be added - anything after that would be taking away from the limited Secret Character slots that are available. I tried to make it so the good teams have 5 players and the weaker teams only have 4 players. I would like to add a 5th player to the Bulls (Dunleavy?) Thunder / Sonics (Reggie Jackson?) and maybe switch Kaman with Nick Young on the Lakers. Would appreciate any help on that front.

Also, I got my Xbox fixed last night and booted it up, looks fantastic on my old SDTV (Y) Played a game or two with the Nets and my boy Joe Johnson, former Arkansas great, and everything felt pretty solid.

I'm planning on doing some more work on this tonight and tomorrow afternoon, then posting the beta after my Super Bowl party tomorrow night. Thanks for sticking with me guys! Appreciate the help and patience. Looking forward to releasing this and getting some feedback :)

Sounds pretty awesome. Had to put in some practice as I haven't played the game in forever. I was Payton with Kemp as my teammate and was getting killed by 10-12 pts and rested Kemp in the 3rd and was down 15 points. Played as Kemp in the 4th, caught fire twice, and outscored the Mavs 27-6 in the 4th to win

Alright, I decided to post the beta now instead. You're going to need to grab a headerless NBA Jam Tournament Edition rom for the SNES. I think most of them are headerless, at least the ones I've come across have been. Apply the patch to your rom, and that should be it. I'll PM the password out now. Be sure to let me know what you think, and let me know if you run into any issues. Cheers!

there are still portrait issues with some players. off the top of my head, gerald green, ibaka, perkins, gay

LOL @ calderon?'s face on the black player on the Acclaim intro. doesn't need to be fixed, but funny anyways

perhaps in a future release, you could put Pelicans/Grizzlies/Rators players on the Rookies team. and replace secret characters with other pelicans grizzlies and raptors players to allow you to pick one as a "secret player" and then team up with a real teammate. i.e. fill up the rookies team and have Eric Gordon, Zach Randolph, Demar DeRozan, etc. all as possibilities on the right side and then add guys like Anthony Davis as one of the secret players that you can select like Jazzy Jeff to allow you to play as Davis and select Gordon as a teammate.

I had a few minor issues with ratings, but it's all minor stuff

it looked like you were all gung-ho on getting 5 players for all the teams at first but then when you got to Utah, you started getting only the more important players in to save time. No Olynyk/Joel Anthony???

I managed to play a quarter with Portland vs Dallas, and I gotta say I am very impressed. the core game is the same but with changed names, portraits, and faces. Awesome job! Can't wait to see where you take this.

Maybe when we get an official release, we can hold online tournaments!

Yeah, I tried to get the portraits to be perfect before I released it, but I just got to the point where I said F it. More concerned about the gameplay and roster data right now, but hopefully I'll just need to spend a day or two on the portraits before everything is perfect. I thought the white face in the intro was pretty damn funny when I noticed it lol. I found out that it was Dragic, so if I really want to I can swap it out, but I might just leave it because it cracks me up.

This isn't a bad idea. I was actually thinking I could get together one of those teams in the rookie slot, but the problem becomes the limited number of players available. There are about 20 or so player portraits that are compressed and not able to be edited, so that takes up most of the secret characters in the game. I'll have to try to figure out how many players are left over, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I really wish I had the technical know how to add / edit teams, but that's way beyond the scope of my abilities. Would be cool to edit the Nets to be from Brooklyn and Sonics to the Thunder, but even that seems like it's way too complicated for me.

Feel free to suggest any rating or roster tweaks you had in mind. As I said in a previous post, I'm not opposed to changing the rosters and ratings around in order to make it the best experience. Even if you think a rating should change by 1, I can edit it in pretty easily.

Appreciate the kind words and the suggestions. Feels good to finally get this out there after months of work. Can't wait to perfect it and release the final version to everyone. Still hoping this gets picked up by a gaming blog or two haha.

Tournaments would be awesome, and if there is enough interest it would be sweet to get a league going.

Tried it out and so far, it's working fine and it's definitely fun having today's players with the old school gameplay. Great job!

At a glance, the ratings are all looking pretty good. I'll keep looking through them and make any suggestions for changes if they come to mind, but nothing jumped at me straight away as being off the mark.

Shame we can't do anything for the PC version, since I still have that up and running in DOSBox.

This seems like the next logical step after fixing the portraits. It may be out of your technical knowledge, but other than addressing the missing teams, updating logos & team jersey/court colors is the only other thing this needs.

A few ratings I noticed. This is all a matter of opinion, but I think you were pretty conservative on giving 9s but I feel that Korver's 3PT should be a 9, Joe Johnson's clutch should be 8 or 9 and James Harden was a bit overrated. His PWR, STL, & DUNK were a bit too high imo. this was all that i could remember off the top of my head. and i think zzcoolj mention Kyrie's dunking as a bit much too.

Still hoping this gets picked up by a gaming blog or two haha.

maybe we could give it a bit of a nudge?

This is great. Do you think you could help me out with a cover for XBMC for me? You're much better with photoshop than I am.. I want to create a Sega genesis style cover (without the sidebar that says Genesis).. It's like a 200x300 rectangle, I tried to make some similar to what's in the OP but that was the only one I was even moderately happy with, and even that I don't even like that much. Here's an example of one I made for my modded NHL 91 rom.. I took the 94 Genesis cover and pasted a picture from the 91 Stanley Cup Finals and edited the name.. But that was easy since I just pasted an image overtop of it and didn't have to do too much editing.

sevin0seven actually did all the ratings for me.. I think he did a great job, but it wouldn't hurt to have a few extra pairs of eyes to look things over.. Harden did seem a little overpowered, I was pretty much dominating with him and Howard when I played earlier haha.. And I agree about Kyrie's dunking, but pretty much most / all PGs seem to have too high and frequent dunking.. I see more guards going in for dunks during gameplay than layups, but I'm not exactly sure how to change them to fix that.

with Lin he still had a fair amount of layups. honestly with less traditional PGs nowadays, there aren't very many PGs that i havent seen dunk. even guys like Lin, CP3 and Lillard have had some sick dunks. I think the shorter guards that don't dunk need to have their dunks lowered to 0 or 1. guys like Parker, Curry, and Rondo should have a 0 in dunks to prevent them from doing it in-game

yeah i would agree he did a great job on ratings, but yeah just a few things that i would personally change

That said, those guys can dunk and Rondo has been known to perform windmills in the open court, so for NBA Jam they could stand to have slightly more generous dunking ratings.

Really?

honestly i dont mind dunking PGs but my only limitation to that is guys like stephen curry shouldnt be doing those somersault off-screen dunks

EDIT: i just finished a game vs minnesota and i dunno if it's in the settings but they shot a LOT of long 3s. almost half court shots.

also, what's your criteria of making players normal/short? seems like there's a good number of short players. seemed like guys 6'3" or under in the original were short players while you had some taller guards like Ray Allen (6'5") as short players. we don't have to stick with the same setup, but i was wondering what your thoughts were on that

Yeah, this is something I'm not sure about.. I kind of want it to feel / play as realistically as possible.. but at the same time, if I cared that much about realism I probably wouldn't be playing NBA Jam.. But Q is right, Curry probably shouldn't be doing 17 front flips over Dwight Howard. I'll have to mess around with the dunk ratings this weekend.

As for the player heights, I mostly made the guards small unless they were 6'6 or taller. I didn't really know what to put for most of the guys that fell in the 6'4 - 6'5 height, kind of could have gone either way.. But I'm definitely open to change it, on some of the guys like Ray Allen specifically (and I think Wade too) the head is for a tall player model and the body is small, so it looks really weird. But there's only one head that fits on the small body, and that obviously doesn't look like everyone.

Oh, no question. Even in Jam, the ratings should be grounded in reality. By generous, I meant that some of those point guards could probably have Dunking ratings from 2-5 and it wouldn't be unreasonable.
