Pistons give fans early Christmas present by landing Jennings
In a move undoubtedly made in response to Orlando's acquisition of Rajon Rondo from the Celtics, Detroit have today agreed a trade that secures them in-form point guard Brandon Jennings from Milwaukee. The Pistons also receive guard Armon Johnson, big man Kosta Koufos and sharpshooter JJ Redick. In return the Bucks acquire Brandon Knight, Cody Zeller, Rodney Stuckey, Jan Vesely and a 2016 first round draft pick.-----
Many experts believe that there are five serious championship contenders in the eastern conference this season. Washington, Philadelphia, Detroit, Brooklyn and Orlando. Last week the Magic made a bold move when they acquired Rajon Rondo from Boston and now the Pistons have responded by completing a deal that they hope will benefit their team in the same way. Many have labelled Brandon Jennings as too inconsistent to be a leader of an NBA team, but this season he has shown his worth by leading the league in scoring. Two years ago he led the Bucks on a fairytale trip to the NBA finals, where they pushed the heavily favoured Thunder to six games before succumbing to the superior team.
The Pistons will hope that Jennings can repeat the feat for them this season. Whilst he will arguably have more talent around him in Detroit, especially in the frontcourt, it will no doubt be tougher for them to go all the way because the eastern conference landscape has changed in those two years. The Wizards have emerged as serious contenders with their young stars, the 76ers keep steaming along nicely and the Nets can never be underestimated. Then there is Orlando who have started slowly in the new LeBron era, but now look to be gathering pace at the right time.
Detroit needed another scorer to help them compete with the best teams. Before doing this deal DeMar DeRozan was their highest scorer this season with an average slightly below twenty points a game. Clearly they felt that acquiring Jennings, as the third highest scorer in the league this season, was the right move.
This trade is the latest step in recent years by the owners in their quest for a championship. Last year they splashed the cash to lure veteran Andre Iguodala to Detroit. Then during the off-season they signed Greg Monroe to a big money deal and traded for DeMar DeRozan. They may have given up important bench players in Stuckey and Zeller, but Redick, Johnson and Koufos should be able to provide solid output for them. Currently they sit four games behind the streaking Wizards with the third seed and a 21-7 record.-----
For Milwaukee this deal represents them moving on from the memory of that surprise finals trip. They loaded up their team with veterans after that season in the expectation that they could reach those heights again. Unfortunately though last season they went 39-43 and narrowly missed the playoffs and so far this season they sit third bottom with a 9-17 record. Obviously Herb Kohl has lost faith in the team's ability to achieve it's goals and now wants to start fresh. Rumours have also circulated that guard Monta Ellis is being shopped around in the hope that the Bucks can ditch his substantial contract.
Brandon Knight was a solid contributor in Detroit and should be a handy replacement for the departed Jennings. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season and it will be interesting to see if he stays with the Bucks. Rodney Stuckey will probably fill in for the injured Monta Ellis for the time being before eventually taking over Redick's role as the sixth man. He still have two years to run on his current deal. Vesely hasn't shown a whole lot so far in his NBA career, but he is still young and on a fairly cheap deal.
Possibly the biggest piece the Bucks get in this trade is seven footer Cody Zeller. The Indiana graduate found playing time hard to come by behind the pairing of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond in Detroit, but should be able to cement the starting spot with the Bucks. He looks like being the future of Milwaukee's frontcourt as veterans Kendrick Perkins and Drew Gooden expire at the end of the season and don't look likely to return. With Kinght, Zeller, LeBryan Nash and Tony Mitchell on board the future doesn't look too bad for the Bucks, no matter what happens with Monta Ellis.
Another reason Milwaukee are shedding wages is the bumper free agent class that will be available next season. They may have to overpay to land them, but any of Eric Gordon, Paul George, Klay Thompson, Enes Kanter, Evan Turner or Chandler Parsons would be a big coup for them and could set them up for another push to the finals.

Three team trade sees Ellis land in Dallas
Less than a week after trading Brandon Jennings to Detroit, Milwaukee today further dismantled their roster by agreeing to a three-team trade that sent star guard Monta Ellis to the Dallas Mavericks. The deal sees the Mavericks receive Ellis, Trevor Ariza and a 2015 second round pick from the Bucks, plus big man Ian Mahinmi from Indiana. The Pacers receive veteran guard Brandon Roy from Dallas, and big men Ersan Ilyasova and Ekpe Udoh from Milwaukee. Finally, the Bucks acquire OJ Mayo, Royce White, JJ Barea and a 2015 first round pick from the Mavericks, and rookie guard Reggie Bullock from the Pacers.-----
It is no coincidence that this trade comes in the same week that Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki announced that this season would be his last. The thirty-six year old German forward has been a loyal member of the Dallas organisation for sixteen years and owner Mark Cuban clearly wants him to retire from basketball with another championship ring. Cuban has shown his willingness to spend big to put his team in championship contention, most notably in 2011 when Nowitzki led them to their first ever title. Dirk is still playing at a high level, but he isn't really capable of carrying the offensive responsibilities on his shoulders anymore. That is where Ellis comes in. He is a much more dynamic scorer than Brandon Roy is and he should fit in well alongside Nowitzki and Danny Granger.
The time was probably right for the Mavs to make a move as they currently sit just outside the playoff seeds with a 14-16 record. Cuban will surely be hoping that Ellis can replicate the form he showed with the Bucks when they reached the finals two seasons ago. If Nikola Pekovic can dominate in the paint for them, they should be a great chance to make the playoffs and even cause an upset or two. Certainly they would be a team that the likes of Oklahoma City and San Antonio would rather avoid in the first round.-----
Indiana fill the biggest hole in their roster by landing a dynamic power forward to play alongside big man Roy Hibbert in the paint. Ilyasova is a great rebounder and should complement the defensive presence of Hibbert. He also has the ability to step out and knock down three pointers, which should serve him well with the Pacers. They also acquire veteran guard Brandon Roy in this deal. He will replace Mayo and hopefully his past playoff experience can help guide the Pacers deep into the post-season. Another positive for Indiana is that Roy's contract saves them a handy $6 million over three years compared to Mayo's.
Doing well this season is particularly important for the Pacers because superstar Paul George will be an unrestricted free agent next off-season and hasn't committed to staying in Indiana at this point in time. There have been strong rumours that the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics and Heat are willing to offer him max contract money if he turns his back on the Pacers. Indiana are currently underachieving in tenth place in the eastern conference with a 14-18 record. They will really need to improve their if they want to secure a playoff spot in an ultra competitive eastern conference.-----
Milwaukee continue their roster retooling by replacing Ellis with Mayo and dumping the contracts of Ilyasova and Ariza. Mayo is two years younger than Ellis and has shown in patches that he can be an effective scorer in this league. It seems like a decent move for them as they will be more focussed on next season now that they have traded away their two best players. After this trade they now only have around $26 million in guaranteed contracts, giving them flexibility to add more talent to their roster through free agency. Although they do have to re-sign recently acquired guard Brandon Knight, which will take up some of their cap room. There is also unrestricted free agents Kendrick Perkins, Drew Gooden, JJ Barea, Daequan Cook and Ishmael Smith to consider.
This deal also lands them another potential lottery pick, depending on how well Dallas do from this point on. It means that they currently have five first round picks over the next two years. Three next year (MIL, OKC & DAL) and two in 2016 (MIL & DET). The next couple of seasons will be important if they ever want to reach the heights of 2013 again. If they are lucky they may end up with an Oklahoma City-like haul of young prospects that they can then develop into stars. It looks highly likely right now that they will indeed have a top five pick in the upcoming draft as they have a 9-18 record. They will be battling it out with the likes of Miami, Minnesota, Boston, Memphis and Sacramento to have first shot at a reportedly stacked draft class.
