Nice wins over the Clippers and Knicks!

Fair call on Dwight. Still though, as a Magic fan who has the highest level of hatred for the fool, I would probably welcome him back.

Yeah he's missed like nearly 2 months through injury. It's weird to see him not playing.

It's nice to know that my team is capable of winning. Just not when I'm controlling them.

I'm not going to rule out trying to sign Dwight. You can't really pass up the best big man in the league when he is available. Plus, I did have Blake Griffin on my Thunder game and I don't really like him either.

Kemba shines brightest amongst rising stars

Player of the Game: Kemba Walker
(28pts, 6reb, 12ast)

The game may have been a blow-out on the scoreboard, but everyone involved seemed to have a good time. Particularly Bobcats guard Kemba Walker.
He was one of three players participating in the rising stars challenge who will also be lining up tomorrow night in the main event, the all-star game.
Walker (28p/6r/12a), Kyrie Irving (16p/11a) and Anthony Davis (20p/6r) were all a class above in a game that showcases the league's best youngsters.
Young Wizards rookie Bradley Beal also dominated in the game. His dazzling 27 point display followed on perfectly from his good early season form.
Damian Lillard made a nice came off the bench and finished with 15 points and 5 assists. Walker and company were far too good in the end though.
A first half display that saw total domination on the boards set up the comfortable win. Rebound machine Kenneth Faried didn't seem his usual self.

Western all-stars hold on to grab narrow win

Image

EAST - 28 29 28 31 116
WEST - 30 28 25 35 118

Player of the Game: Russell Westbrook
(37pts, 3ast, 3stl)

All of the talk leading up to this year's all-star game has been about the absence of the MVP favourite and multiple scoring champion Kevin Durant.
But by the time that this game was finished his Oklahoma City team-mate Russell Westbrook had made sure that the conversation had shifted topic.
The often maligned guard put on a display even that Durant himself would have been proud of. He scored the equal-fourth highest number of points.
His 37 points ties him with Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett on the all-time list. It was only 5 points shy of the record of 42 by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962.

The match-up between Westbrook and Chicago guard Derrick Rose was mouth-watering for fans. Both are so athletic and match-up well on each other.
Rose ended the game with 27 points and 7 assists himself. LeBron James had his usual triple-double flirtation with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists.
Memphis forward Rudy Gay managed to shake off all of the speculation surrounding his future and had a decent game in his first all-star appearance.
Every man and his dog knows that the Grizzlies need to trade Gay this season and with only four days until the deadline, they are leaving it quite late.

There were a lot of great players that missed the game through injury this year. Such as Durant, Chris Paul, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Bosh and James Harden.
Other regulars like Tim Duncan, Dwyane Wade, Tony Parker, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce missed out. A new generation are taking over their spots.
A fresh group of Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker all made their first all-star appearances this season.
Guys like John Wall, Evan Turner, Jrue Holiday, Paul George, Derrick Favors, Greg Monroe and Damian Lillard will be pressing their claims in the future.

The game itself was a classic. Neither team led by more than four points the entire time. It's surprising that it didn't end up going to overtime either.
It was a strangely competitive game from the offset. Usually these games are played in more of an exhibition type atmosphere during the first half.
Westbrook and Rose traded baskets all night and LeBron was involved in nearly everything the eastern all-stars did. Everyone got game time as well.
It was the Thunder guard that emerged as the MVP at the end though for his amazing display of speed, athleticism and sheer force in attacking the rim.

Westbrook probably figured that since Durant wasn't there, it was his turn to get all the attention. I tried to keep up with Rose but I couldn't.

Grizzlies dump Gay in Washington

Image

Memphis today somewhat reluctantly accepted the Wizards offer of expiring contracts and a first round pick for recent all-star forward Rudy Gay.
The 26 year old had been shopped around the league during the past month because the Grizzlies just couldn't afford to keep his large contract.
Several teams were interested in him, but none of them could come up with a deal that satisfied all of the criteria that Memphis were looking for.
Initially they were hoping to get a young prospect and some draft picks for him, but it seems that no teams were willing to meet this lofty price.
As the deadline drew ever closer they changed their demands to expiring contracts and draft picks. This put the Wizards at the front of the queue.
Washington rolled the dice on this deal, giving up Corey Maggette, Kenyon Martin, Donte Greene and the first round pick they got from Houston.
It perhaps isn't the ideal package that Memphis were hoping for, but it certainly achieves what they set out to do when they started shopping Gay.

No team ever wants to break up something that is working, but despite their impressive 31-23 start the Grizzlies had to look at the bigger picture.
Keeping Gay and the $37m he is owed in the next two seasons would have created severe luxury tax issues, which a small market team can't take.
Grizzlies management didn't want to pay excessive luxury tax for a team that they just don't feel can truly compete for a championship right now.
Reportedly their first priority was to trade Zach Randolph, but the combination of his age and salary made him an unattractive proposition to teams.

After much discussion they realised that their only option was to trade Gay. There were several interested teams, but few that had the right pieces.
In stepped Washington general manager Steve Kerr to once again take advantage of another teams unfortunate situation to improve his own team.
When former Hornets guard Eric Gordon wanted out of New Orleans, it was Kerr who stepped in and negotiated a move that saw him move to Utah.
Of course Kerr used the Indiana natives' desire to leave to leverage a deal to acquire young forward Derrick Favors from the Jazz in a complex deal.

After all is said and done the Grizzlies still have a core of Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley that can keep them at their current heights.
Their supporting cast of Tony Allen, Marreese Speights and Jerryd Bayless all give everything for the team. They are still a good, playoff calibre team.
Maggette and Martin should add a good level of experience to the Grizzlies team which will come in handy if they end up going deep in the playoffs.
Donte Greene is a handy player to have on the bench. His length allows him to be effective at scoring and also rebounding at both ends of the court.
Houston currently occupy seventh seed in the west with a 30-26 record. If they finish the season poorly Memphis could end up with a top 15 pick.

Washington meanwhile took a big step forward in their development towards being a playoff team. Gay will help them immensely moving forward.
His athleticism will allow him to to fit in nicely with the Wizards' run-and-gun style of offense that John Wall and Bradley Beal are currently running.
The small forward position is one that Washington was desperate to upgrade. They had been looking ahead to the free agent market to fill the gap.
"We just felt that Rudy was a much better option than what we could potentially get in the Summer", said Wizards GM Steve Kerr this afternoon.
"This deal does limit us somewhat in what we can do in the Summer now, but from our point of view we've just completed our main business early."
The struggling Wizards were due to have around $37m to spend on free agents during next year's off-season. Now it's been cut to just over $19m.

Realistically, they probably weren't the first name of Dwight Howard's list of destinations anyway, so this move isn't exactly bad business by them.
Chris Paul wasn't going to be a target either given that they've got John Wall. After those two it's debatable if anyone available is better than Gay.
Paul Millsap, Andre Iguodala, Monta Ellis and OJ Mayo could all become available and the Wizards do still have enough room to afford one of them.
The direction they take during the free agency period will largely depend on what they can do in the draft. Especially if they land a top five pick.
Another dominant defensive big man is top of their list. If they manage to select Cody Zeller or Nerlens Noel they may not need to pursue Howard.
If the Wizards can add some quality depth to their team over the off-season, they will definitely be aiming to grab that eighth seed next season.

Funnily enough getting Rudy for my original Thunder team was the first trade I ever did in a dynasty/association.

phpBB [video]

Oh and I realise that he's overpaid, the deal isn't really market value and it goes against my rebuild policy. But I'm not bothered because they got what they needed and so did I. Sure I may have ended up drafting Shabazz Muhammad to fill the SF gap, but the depth of quality in the free agency pool isn't as good as it could have been. I'd rather spend $17m on a quality SF than on 3-4 role player types.

I wasn't going to do any more trades this season, but the real life stories about Gay gave me the idea to do this.

You're probably right. But I like him as a player and I have to spend the money on someone. Might as well be the fourth best SF on the game.

I like the Gay trade, but it looks like he isn't getting enough points like he should be consistently

Nice acquisition of Rudy Gay! Just like Durant35 said, you'd be making the playoffs next year around 3-5 seed.

As long as he can get 20 per game I'm happy. He's probably still fitting in with my team and the chemistry is hard to establish when you keep losing.

Hopefully I can add a great prospect in the draft and then some quality depth during the free agency period and come out next season and attack the 5-8 seeds at least.
