Re: NBA 2k13 - Wizardry needed in Washington

Postby Phil89 on Mon Dec 31, 2012 9:34 pm

Why the Wizards? I wanted something completely different from what my Thunder game on Live 10 had become.

-Eastern conference team
-Rebuild job
-Wall & Beal to build around
-Potential lottery picks
-Free agency

It'll probably take me some time to get used to not winning 60 games a season though.

I'm going to try not to make too many changes to the roster in a short space of time, but there will be a couple of deals at the start to get me on track with my long-term strategy for this team.

Wizards hire Steve Kerr as new general manager

Image

Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis today announced that long time general manager Ernie Grunfeld had left by mutual consent.
Former Phoenix Suns general manager and experienced NBA analyst Steve Kerr was announced as the Wizards' new general manager.
He was relatively successful during his three-year spell in Phoenix. The team had a 155-91 record during that time, winning 63% of games.
They even reached the western conference finals in 2010 but were eliminated in six games by the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Grunfield had been in the job since 2003. In nine seasons his teams only made the playoffs four times, losing in the first round three times.
He had gotten rid of some trouble players recently, but obviously Leonsis had decided that the team had stagnated under his stewardship.
The likes of Gilbert Arenas, JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Nick Young have been moved on. Their off-court antics proved their downfall.
All were undoubtedly talented, but lacked a certain something between the ears. John Wall has now inherited the leader role on the team.
The Wizards' owner apparently not wanting young star John Wall's talent to go to waste and decided it was time to make a positive change.
Future scouting will target players who have less erratic personalities. They would rather have a Kevin Durant type than a Dennis Rodman.
No more will they take risks with players who demand to be the centre of attention. There needs to be a team first mentality all around.

It's believed that Leonsis decided to follow the path that the Oklahoma City Thunder have gone down with such great success in recent years.
Kerr's work in Phoenix made him Leonsis' top choice to implement the new strategy, which will be building around John Wall and Bradley Beal.
He himself has spoken of his admiration of Thunder GM Sam Presti and his team building efforts whilst broadcasting Thunder games on TNT.
Now it's up to him to get the Wizards back onto the right path. This is a team that hasn't featured in the playoffs since the 2007-08 season.

The first major task for Kerr will be to reduce the team's wage bill beyond this season and acquire some more young prospects for the future.
Next season the Wizards will have about $52m in guaranteed contracts on their books. Veterans Nene and Emeka Okafor having the biggest.
Supposedly Kerr has been given a license to make some aggressive trade moves in order to shed some of the team's undesirable contracts.
His directive is to target younger players and future draft picks. All of which could possibly be used in the future as important trading pieces.

Another reason for this change in direction for the Wizards is the possibility of Dwight Howard and Chris Paul being free agents in 2013.
Both are seemingly happy in Los Angeles for the moment, but neither has specifically committed to the Lakers or Clippers respectively.
Two other targets that Leonsis might have his eye on are Andre Iguodala and Paul Millsap. The latter being a restricted free agent though.
Kerr might decide to extend their free agency flexibility until 2014 though, with the biggest name of them all LeBron James expiring then.

Some other staff changes for the Wizards include head trainer Eric Waters being replaced by Martin Walls, who signed a four-year contract.
The scouting department was also revamped, with Mark House and Clint Dudley signed as the new NBA scout and prospect scout respectively.
Despite all of the changes, head coach Randy Wittman and assistant coach Sam Cassell will both remain with the team for the foreseeable future.

The Wizards open their season in Cleveland against the Cavaliers on October 30th. It will be interesting to see what changes they make by then.

Yeah, that's funny especially when you play the late 90's Bulls where in Kerr is playing and also commentating.

That's definitely going to be a conflict of interest with Kerr on commentary. ;)

A good choice for a change of pace. Will certainly be keeping an eye on this one.

For sentimental reasons, I'm kind of hoping you keep Nene and Livingston (in earlier Live games, I was able to overachieve with him), but I would completely understand if either one (or both) ended up being traded.

Anyway, good luck with this one. I'll make sure to check in from time to time.

Thanks. The challenge of turning this ship (franchise) away from the iceberg (mediocrity) really excites me.

Perhaps I should have thought that through a bit better. But it was too late once I realised and I couldn't be bothered thinking of someone else to use for the story.

For anyone who followed my other threads, this one will be a bit different. So far I'm rubbish at this game, but I don't want to lower the difficulty. I feel that my improvement in playing this game will coincide with my team improving and it adds to the story. So no 60 win seasons for a while. :P

I don't mind Nene, but his age and contract kind of conflict with my usual philosophy for save games. If it makes any difference though there will be another former Nuggets player on the roster soon.

Rockets acquire Nene from Wizards

Image

Washington general manager Steve Kerr today made his first move in his new role by sending forward Nene to the Houston Rockets.
The Rockets also received former Atlanta shooting guard Jordan Crawford and third-year power forward Trevor Booker as part of the deal.
In return the Wizards acquired promising forward Patrick Patterson, sharpshooter Daequan Cook and the Rockets 2013 first round pick.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale has apparently been an admirer of the Brazilian. He missed out on signing him as a free agent last season.
Of course later he re-signed with the Nuggets in December 2011 and was subsequently traded to the Wizards only three months later.
Now McHale has got his man. A powerful inside scorer to partner Omer Asik in the frontcourt and balance it out at both ends of the court.
Asik has proved himself to be an effective interior defender and shot-blocker. His rebounding ability should take some pressure off Nene.
Nene said in an interview in 2011 that he liked the city of Houston. The humidity and tropical climate remind him of his native Brazil.
Jordan Crawford and Trevor Booker are both twenty-four years old and should both be useful role players off the bench for the Rockets.
With their recently acquired core of James Harden, Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik the Rockets have decided it's time to compete now.

The Wizards shed Nene's monster $52m contract and acquired a younger, cheaper replacement with a very promising future in Patterson.
He will compete with French forward Kevin Seraphin for a starting role with the Wizards. Cook will provide a scoring boost off the bench.
Probably the biggest part of this deal for Washington is the draft pick. They will be looking to put together a few first round picks in 2013.
They are said be aggressively targeting highly rated prospects like Nerlens Noel, Shabazz Muhammad and Cody Zeller in next years draft.
Whether they get a high draft pick on their own or have to trade up using assets, it's likely that they will try to get a top rookie next year.
Kerr could be looking to move veteran center Emeka Okafor on before the season starts. He is owed $28m over the next two seasons.

Jordan Crawford - 24 - SG - $3.36m - 2 years (75)

Projected line-up:
Omer Asik - Nene - Chandler Parsons - James Harden - Jeremy Lin

Wizards receive
Patrick Patterson - 23 - PF - $5.20m - 2 years (75)
Daequan Cook - 25 - SG - $3.09m - 1 year (62)
Rockets' 2013 1st round pick

Projected line-up:
Emeka Okafor - Patrick Patterson - Trevor Ariza - Bradley Beal - John Wall
Bench:
Kevin Seraphin, Chris Singleton, Cartier Martin, Jan Vesely, Shaun Livingston, Daequan Cook, AJ Price

Good job getting Pat man :D really solid pf who is younger and has a smaller contract then Nene. In every of my wizards associations that I have done, trading Nene has always been my first move because of his big contract.

Oh snap!

That's a good trade though. Patterson is solid and Cook will give you another sniper.

I'm intrigued to see who the ex-Nuggets player is. Kinda hoping it's Birdman.

Well it was a toss up between Andersen and the guy I picked; who is also 34, heavily tattooed and nearly 7 feet tall.

I'm sure that doesn't narrow it down too much. :P

Wizards send Okafor to Bucks in exchange for expiring contracts

Image

Just over a week after trading Nene to Houston, Washington general manager Steve Kerr has pulled the trigger on another deal.
This time he has agreed a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks that will see them receive Emeka Okafor, Trevor Ariza and Chris Singleton.
Washington acquires Samuel Dalembert, Beno Udrih and Mike Dunleavy in the deal. The experienced trio are all on expiring contracts.
The Wizards also received the Bucks' 2013 first round pick. It means that they now have three selections in the first round next season.

With star duo Monta Ellis (Player option) and Brandon Jennings (Restricted) expiring next season the Bucks really need to compete now.
Adding Okafor gives them a great defensive anchor who can help Ilyasova out on the boards and allow more aggressive perimeter defense.
The former second overall pick could be a great pick up considering he's averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game during his career.
It's not a huge financial risk either considering that Okafor will be a $15m expiring contract next season. A useful trading piece to have.
Ariza is an upgrade at the three spot for the Bucks, who only had Mike Dunleavy, Marquis Daniels and Luc Mbah a Moute before this trade.
Adding Chris Singleton also gives them a decent group of young promising big men including Larry Sanders, Ekpe Udoh and Tobias Harris.

Washington achieve their end goal by removing another monster contract from their salary and acquiring another first round draft pick.
Getting Okafor off the books now means that only Wall, Beal, Patterson, Seraphin and Vesely are contracted beyond the current season.
Having three first round draft picks in next year's draft also gives them some solid assets to package together to acquire a top five pick.
They could well be looking at drafting a top prospect like Cody Zeller, Nerlens Noel or Shabazz Muhammad, who would all fit them nicely.
For the short term though veterans like Dalembert, Udrih and Dunleavy can hopefully do a decent job for them for the rest of the season.

Wizards waive trio, sign Greene

Washington also announced today that reserve players Earl Barron, AJ Price and Cartier Martin had been released by the club.
The trio seemingly deemed surplus to requirements by Wizards management. All three were in the final year of their contracts.
It was also revealed today that former Sacramento forward Donte Greene has signed with the Wizards until the end of the season.
New GM Steve Kerr has quickly worked his magic, reducing the Wizards' guaranteed contracts to just $24m in 2013 and $0 in 2014.
It's no secret that superstars like Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and LeBron James could all be available during the next two off-seasons.

Surprising moves there, but it would seem to be setting you up to be a major player in free agency. Hope it pans out!

Emeka Okafor is a really solid centre but considering that you got rid of those big contracts it was a good trade( you also got a first roud pick). Let me tell, you're trying to build this team by the draft and free agency( like Miami+ OKC). :D

Nice way of getting things done early. Clearing out for cap space I see. I may be sensing some superstar-material luring here. :D

Nice pickup of Patterson. I see you're trying to clear some cap space. And I'm excited to see either Dwight or 'Bron on your team with Beal and Wall, that would be sick!

I've decided not to have any video highlights at the moment, whilst I'm still getting used to the game.

Also, the young nature of my team coupled with my inexperience on this game means I don't think I'll win many games this season (Unless I sim some lol)
