That Batum dunk is looking great. Good to see Aldridge getting some league-wide attention. I wonder how you are able to stay in the playoff race. good job.

Thanks man. With an HDTV and a good phone camera, I finally have fairly decent pics. A low playoff seed is my goal this season. While it may seem more logical to tank with my weak roster and get another high draft pick, Lillard has been way better than expected, and Aldridge is an all-star caliber player. The Chuck Hayes move was risky as it eats up a lot of my cap going forward, but the team's better and I may make another move to do something about that bench. The team isn't that bad, but the odds are probably against us.

WEEK NINE: Dec. 23 - Dec. 29
Team Record: 13-16 (1-3) - 4th in division, 10th in conference

Blurry photo shows the state all Blazers fans were in at that point.

It was a trying week for the Trailblazers, who went 1-3 to close out 2012 with a sub-.500 record. Given the team's struggling play, some have suggested the Blazers should already make another move. However, coach Terry Stotts assured reporters that he has "100 percent faith in everybody on this roster". Nonetheless, with a 13-16 record, Portland has some ground to make up to get back in the playoff picture.

Blazers Drop Third Straight In Sac-Town
12/23/12 - Blazers 99 @ Kings 106

If only the 2nd and 4th quarters counted, the Blazers would have won, but alas, the recently extended Tyreke Evans and the Kings defeated Portland. Matthews, Aldridge and Lillard played decent games, but J.J. Hickson's 13 and 6 were just too much.

POR 15 34 17 33 | 99 [12-14] - Matthews: 24/3/2; Lillard; 15/6/7; Aldridge: 18/4/1
SAC 20 29 24 33 | 106 [10-17] - T. Evans: 18/3/3; Brooks: 17/3/8; T. Robinson: 14/10/1

Blazers Get Big Revenge On Kings
12/26/12 - Kings 99 @ Blazers 117

The Blazers celebrated Boxing Day at the Rose Garden with a blowout against the Kings. Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge led the way as the Blazers rode a dominant third quarter to end their losing streak and improve to 13-14.

SAC 28 32 15 25 | 99 [10-18] - T. Robinson: 19/9/1; T. Evans: 16/4/6; Hickson: 14/6/0
POR 35 30 32 20 | 117 [13-14] - Lillard: 25/3/6, 9-12 FG; Aldridge: 28/5/2; N. Smith: 19/2/3

Lakers Annihilate Blazers
12/28/12 - Blazers 78 @ Lakers 119

In a game that was never close, the struggling Lakers showed who was boss against the Blazers, blowing them out by 41 points. Portland had no answer for Kobe and Dwight's huge games as they fall to 13-15 on the year. LA meanwhile stays above water, improving to 16-14.

POR 16 17 17 28 | 78 [13-15] - Aldridge: 20/2/1; Matthews: 12/8/1; Batum: 11/4/0
LAL 25 26 40 28 | 119 [16-14] - Bryant: 35/4/8; Howard: 24/16/2; Nash: 12/4/10

Sixers Shut Down Blazers In Portland
12/29/12 - 76ers 89 @ Blazers 78

Portland will go in to the new year with a record of 13-16, as they fall apart in the second half against the 76ers. The game was very close in the first half, but the Sixers forced the Blazers into several third quarter turnovers that would ultimately cost them the game. Despite a 9-9 shooting night from Wesley Matthews, the Blazers never had much of a chance against the superior Sixers.

Nick Young led the way for Philly with 21 points. Big games to cap the year from Matthews and Lillard were not enough as they have now lost of their last six. Philadelphia meanwhile solidifies their position at the top of the Atlantic Division.

PHI 27 25 22 15 | 89 [19-12] - Young: 21/2/1; Bynum: 14/11/0; Turner: 12/4/3
POR 22 26 12 18 | 78 [13-16] - Matthews: 22/4/3, 9-9 FG; Lillard: 18/2/9; Aldridge: 15/8/1

A 5-8 month for Portland as disappointing as they fell below .500 and out of the playoff picture. Portland made a move to acquire Chuck Hayes this month, but given their struggles, another would not be too surprising. Nonetheless, most expected Portland to be tanking the year and to be only two games back of the Lakers is heartening.

Blazers Player Averages

Aldridge: 22.7 PPG, 7.8 RPG
Batum: 17.7 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 2.2 APG
Lillard: 15.3 PPG, 6.8 APG, 3.0 RPG
Matthews: 13.0 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.7 APG
N. Smith: 7.6 PPG, 3.8 APG, 2.1 RPG
Honeycutt: 4.2 PPG, 1.6 RPG
Leonard: 3.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG
Posey: 3.4 PPG, 2.4 RPG
Price: 3.1 PPG, 2.4 APG
Hayes: 1.3 PPG, 5.3 RPG

Rookie Ladder

Image
1. Damian Lillard (POR): 15.3 PPG, 6.8 APG, 3.0 RPG
Second in scoring and first in assists among rookies, Lillard has exceeded even the Blazers' expectations with his play. Portland is just two games out of the playoff picture and should Lillard keep this up, it just might stay that way,
2. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (CHA): 15.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG
The Bobcats are a much better team than they were last year and MKG is a big reason why. Third in scoring and second in rebounding, Kidd-Gilchrist has a good shot at the rookie of the year trophy and all-star games in the future.
3. Anthony Davis (NO): 12.6 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.5 BPG
Davis has been a solid defensive force but not yet a major impact player for New Orleans. Still, he puts up solid numbers, leading all rookies in blocks and being third in rebounding.
4. Bradley Beal (WAS): 16.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.9 APG
Beal leads all rookies in scoring and the Wizards are off to a slightly less terrible start than usual. He could make a push for the award should Washington make a push for the eight seed.
5. Thomas Robinson (SAC): 12.4 PPG, 9.4 RPG
Robinson came in and quickly secured the starting role in Sacramento and hasn't looked back. Robinson leads all rookies in rebounding but Sacramento already sits ten games below .500.

Yeah, practically, I'm going after Phoenix's playoff spot. That awful finish to the month really hurt us though. I updated the monthly recap with the transaction report I forgot to include.

Wow, too many extensions for sure ... some of them are silly as hell. I usually edit those 12M$/4y extension because they don't exist in real life. I ususally make them two year deals, like veteran minimum stuff. Much more realistic. Good luck catching Phoenix.

Rockets Acquire James Harden

Image
Thunder trade G James Harden, G Daequan Cook, F Nick Collison to Rockets for G Kevin Martin, G/F Jeremy Lamb, F Jon Brockman, '13 1st rounder

In a deal that was held up by injuries and extension talks, the Thunder and Rockets have finally pulled the trigger on the deal that will send James Harden to the Rockets for Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and a 2013 first rounder among other assets. The Thunder were off to a slightly disappointing start and couldn't agree to terms on an extension with Harden. Houston meanwhile will hope to avoid its fourth consecutive 9th place finish with the acquisition of a potential all-star in Harden.

Blazers Held To 21 Second Half Points, Lose Third Straight
1/1/2013 - Blazers 68 @ Knicks 94

The Blazers were shut down in the second half and were blown out by the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Melo and Stoudemire paced the Knicks offensively, but it was their defense and Lillard's struggles that won them the game. Portland drops their third straight and fall to 13-17, while the Knicks improve to 16-15.

POR 31 16 13 8 | 68 [13-17] - Aldridge: 20/4/3 blks; Batum: 8/8/1; Lillard: 10/1/7/6 TO's, 3-15 FG
NYK 26 16 23 29 | 94 [16-15] - Anthony: 27/10/5; Stoudemire: 20/10/2; Shumpert: 19/3/1

Portland Loses Fourth Straight Game
1/2/2013 - Blazers 70 @ Raptors 91

The Toronto Raptors dominated from the start with a huge first quarter and the Blazers never could put together a run to get back into the game. Despite solid play from LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian LIllard, the Blazers followed up their 68 point game at New York with a 70 point game here. That was not enough as the Raptors rode solid games from DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry to a blowout victory.

The loss puts the Blazers record at 13-18. With four straight losses and their season on the brink, their next game against the struggling Memphis Grizzlies may be a huge factor in the direction of the season. Toronto meanwhile continues to improve and push towards an unlikely playoff run.

POR 17 21 21 11 | 70 [13-18] - Aldridge: 21/9/5; Lillard: 15/5/7; Matthews: 11/4/1
TOR 32 25 19 15 | 91 [12-19] - Lowry: 11/5/12; DeRozan: 21/5/1; Bargnani: 12/3/1

Blazers' Losing Streak Ends In Memphis
1/4/2013 - Blazers 110 @ Grizzlies 100

In front of a not-so-packed Memphis crowd, the Portland Trail Blazers ended their losing streak on the backs of twenty point games by their "big three" of Nic Batum, LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard. The game was competitive throughout, but the league-worst Grizzlies' defense fell apart in the fourth as Portland took the game 110-100 to improve to 14-18.

POR 29 27 22 32 | 110 [14-18] - Batum: 23/4/6; Aldridge: 24/8/1; Lillard: 20/1/6
MEM 34 24 17 25 | 100 [7-23] - M. Gasol: 21/9/2; Conley: 14/7/8; Z. Randolph: 15/7/0

Blazers Shock Wolves To End Road Trip On High Note
1/5/2013 - Blazers 97 @ Timberwolves 94

Damian Lillard showed former Blazer Brandon Roy what he thought of his comeback attempt as he torched him with an efficient 23 points, 9 boards and 5 assists. Portland finishes their road trip with an upset over the Timberwolves, who at 17-13, are fighting to hold their playoff position. Portland meanwhile improves to a more respectable 15-18.

POR 14 24 28 31 | 97 [15-18] - Lillard: 23/9/5, 10-14 FG; Aldridge: 27/8/2; Batum: 15/5/4
MIN 21 22 25 26 | 94 [17-13] - Love: 17/11/2; Pekovic: 18/8/0; Roy: 14/1/4

Sit, Yeah, unfortunately the game still disallows trading of injured players, so I had to make a work-around deal. Hopefully it's still fair. I'm still optimistic about our playoff chances, although I probably shouldn't be...

Justine., Indeed, it was about damn time.

Valor, A little bit of both, but mostly the latter. :P

Next week coming up. Will the Blazers stay in the playoff picture or be forced to make another deal? Stay tuned to find out.

Week ELEVEN: 1/6 - 1/13
Team Record: 16-20 (1-2) | 5th in division, 11th in conference

Image

It was another difficult week for Portland as they lose two of three to fall even further out of the playoff picture at 16-20. To their credit, nobody expected them to beat the Heat, but it is nonetheless disappointing for the team's fleeting post-season hopes. With the trade deadline a month away, all eyes will be on the Blazers to make another move.

Portland Wins Third Straight Game
1/7/2013 - Magic 98 @ Blazers 103

Thanks to all ten players in the Blazer rotation showing up, the Blazers were able to eke out a win over the Magic for their third straight. The game was close throughout as Jameer Nelson had the hot hand, but the Blazers took control late in the second and their fluid offense kept them on top. They improve to 16-18, while the Magic fall to 15-19. Portland will be visited by the 27-6 Miami Heat next.

ORL 25 21 25 27 | 98 [15-19] - Nelson: 24/2/5, 9-12 FG; Harrington: 20/6/0; Afflalo: 15/2/6
POR 21 31 24 27 | 103 [16-18] - Aldridge: 20/9/0; Lillard: 20/2/6; Matthews: 16/4/2

Blazers Come Up Short Against Heat
1/10/2013 - Heat 110 @ Blazers 95

Image

The Portland Trailblazers showed up to play against the Miami Heat. Unfortunately, so did the Heat. In a game closer than the final score suggested, the Blazers' fluid offense kept them in it. They couldn't stop Dwyane Wade and LeBron however as it was a dunk-fest. Ultimately, a late run fell short and the Heat ran up the score to win it 110-95.

LaMarcus Aldridge had a solid game, while Lillard had 24 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. However, for Miami, LeBron had 33 and Wade had 32. "We played hard, and I'm proud of my guys. However, our interior defense is a disaster", commented coach Terry Stotts after the game. The loss ends a three game winning streak for Portland as they fall to 16-19.

MIA 24 27 28 31 | 110 [28-6] - L. James: 33/6/12; Wade: 32/7/2, 15-19 FG; Bosh: 12/11/2
POR 19 23 30 23 | 95 [16-19] - Lillard: 22/9/9; Aldridge: 24/8/3; Batum: 13/6/3

Curry Carries Warriors Past Blazers
1/11/2013 - Blazers 96 @ Warriors 103

The Golden State Warriors have been one of the surprise teams this season, and they showed why, defeating the Blazers behind a big game from Stephen Curry. To the Blazers' credit, they were in it until the end, but ultimately fell short. Their record now stands at 16-20.

POR 27 20 18 31 | 96 [16-20] - Lillard: 25/1/3; Batum: 17/10/23; N. Smith: 18/1/1
GSW 23 23 26 31 | 103 [22-13] - S. Curry: 29/5/6; D. Lee: 17/7/3; Jack: 13/7/5

Tank for a high lottery pick. ;)

Even a mid lottery pick could get you Will Sit. I think this will be the first time Will Sit does not mind going to Portland (ok... maybe second cause last time we won it all). All the other reincarnations usually did go there.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Chapter 3: The Deal

Following a tough loss at the hands of the Warriors, Liam and Neil had both come to the agreement that another trade had to be made. The question was, do we try to win now, or blow it up?

Nolan Smith and Luke Babbitt were instantly placed on the trading block. Five teams showed interest: Toronto, Boston, Phoenix, Minnesota and Dallas. Olshey and Washburn looked at each other and knew which offer they would take.

Luke Babbitt was thrilled to shed his bench warmer title for a new start, but Most Improved Player candidate Nolan Smith was not - so much so that he refused to shake Neil Olshey's hand on the way out.

----------

"For three... it's good! 13 points already for the newest member of the Blazers and counting. Steve, how do you feel about the trade the Blazers made?"

"I don't know, Kevin. It's a pretty big risk for a team that's probably going to miss the playoffs- oh, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL!"

"Well, for what it's worth, it's going to be an interesting second half of the season for Portland. We have to take a break, but we'll be right back. Portland up 8."

----------

"I've got to give it to you, Liam. I think that trade is going to get us into the playoffs."

Liam smiled and replied, "so how do you feel about getting Nellie out of retirement now?"

Neil Olshey chuckled. "No, but I'll consider signing Luther Head. Let's give 'em head!"

Paul Allen walked in right at that moment, then turned around and left.
