Installing/Playing NBA Live '96 on Windows 7?

Postby Llama_Cookie on Tue Nov 13, 2012 5:27 am

Hey guys, I'm trying to install NBA Live '96 on Windows 7. I tried all compatibility modes for all autorun.exe and install.exe, and tried to run it through DOSBox. Nothing seems to work. If anyone knows how to do this, please reply. Thanks!

It should work just fine in DOSBox, I've had no issues with it. How familiar are you with DOSBox?

Not so familiar. Maybe you can upload a tutorial on how to run it? That would be awesome.

These instructions should get the job done if you follow them carefully. Please note that I take no responsibility if something does go wrong. ;)

  1. Run DOSBox.

  2. At the command prompt, type MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom (assuming your optical drive is D).

  3. Type Mount C C:\ (assuming C is the hard drive you want to mount and install to). You will be warned this isn't a good idea, but it's fine so long as you don't something silly like delete system files or try to re-install Windows or whatever, you should be fine.

  4. Type D:\ to change to the DVD/CD drive.

  5. Type install. Install the program as normal to C:\NBA96. As long as you mounted your hard drive properly, there should be no problems here.

  6. When you've finished installing the game, you should be at C:\NBA96. Type NBA96 or NBA to run the game.

It's also possible to create a Windows shortcut that automatically launches DOSBox and the game, though let's see if we can get that working first. That method will also work for NBA Live 95 and the DOS version of NBA Live 97.

Great. :) I've created a shortcut on my desktop using the following target:

"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -userconf "C:\NBA96\NBA96.exe"

For Windows 7, you'll probably need to use:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -userconf "C:\NBA96\NBA96.exe"

Also make sure that you add MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom to the DOSBox configuration file (accessible through All Programs -> DOSBox-0.74 -> Options -> DOSBox 0.74 Options). Just copy and paste it at the bottom of the file, which should open in Notepad, then save. This will save you the trouble of mounting the optical drive each time and allow the shortcut to work. If your optical drive is assigned a letter other than D, make sure you substitute accordingly (eg MOUNT E E:\ -t cdrom, MOUNT I I:\ -t cdrom, etc).

Weird, it gives me an error when i try to play it:

I typed NBA.bat, and it started fine, but before the game window could come up, it gave me this error:

C:/NBA96> I:\NBA96\lgports\ports1.hed FILE ERROR

You think you can help?

I neglected to mention that you'd need to substitute the letter of your optical drive accordingly when adding the MOUNT line to the config. I'll add a note about that. :)

Another small note: If you add -exit at the end of the target (eg "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -userconf "C:\NBA96\NBA96.exe" -exit), DOSBox will automatically close when you exit the game. Handy if you're running DOSBox in full screen mode and/or don't want to type "exit" at the command prompt when you're finished playing.

Hi Andrew, I followed your guidelines for installing NBA Live 97 in windows (XP, not 7) and worked great, so THANKS for that!!! :applaud:
I have a little problem, The only way I can run the game is installing it without a sound system. Is there any way of solving that?
Thanks in advance.

Strange, I've had no sound issues running the DOS version under DOSBox. Trying to detect the sound card during installation usually causes problems so you should just manually select one. Usually the default Sound Blaster option is sufficient, but if that doesn't work try one of the other available options.

I reinstalled it using the default Sound Blaster option and this time worked fine.
Thanks again!

No worries, i found the culprit, searching through DOS-BOX's option file, i found that in [dosbox] section the machine it tries to emulate is svga_3000, which is default one for me, so i just changed it to vesa_noflb/vesa_oldvbe, it fixed the installation problem.

Good to know. Just checked, and mine is set to svga_s3.
