This comes unexpected! Seems like Phil was either too expensive or just not healthy enough for (nearly) a full NBA campaign.
Or maybe Jim Buss just did again what Jim Buss does best: give a sh*t on everybody else's opinion...

Not unexpected. Kobe(which actually is all that matters) had him approved long before. It was just the fans and media wanting Zen Master back.

It makes you wonder though, if the Lakers once again hired somebody that shouldn't have been, as a scape-goat.

So that's why Bernie is like running the D'Antoni offense the past two games.

My first impression on the hiring.

But why give him a 3+1 year contract if he's just the next former head coach of the L.A. Lakers?

Brown was signed for a 4 year contract and he was just a scape-goat.

This works well for the Lakers starting five.
Nash knows D'Antoni's system very very well, Dwight will be catching passes like it was the dunk contest from those pick and rolls, Pau is definitely miles better than what Boris Diaw was in Phoenix, Kobe can continue on chucking shots from everywhere without hesitation because of the offense, and Ron Artest will be what Raja Bell was in Phoenix without the 3-point shooting.

As for defense...D'Antoni is an excellent coach on offense that even the opposing team gets better on offense.

Even though D'Antoni's name had been mentioned, it's still a surprising move as it seemed like Jackson was on his way back. One can't help but wonder what went awry, whether they were too far apart on terms or whether Jackson found the opportunity less appealing than it seems on the surface.

Based on the articles posted in this thread it's reported that Jackson also wants a hand in personnel/player decisions. Not hard to imagine Jim Buss saying no to that condition and breaking off the hiring, he did hire Mike Brown without consulting his franchise player Kobe The G.O.A.T. Bryant.

From what I heard, Jackson wanted $15 million and road games off.

They would've been better off hiring Nate McMillan..

Or have D'Antoni as offensive coach and bring back Brown as a defensive coach.

D'Antoni's system is great to utilize Nash. Too bad he's 38 years old and incapable of playing 40 minutes a game anymore. And since the only play in Mike's system is the pick'n'roll, looks like Bryant will have to play them or maybe some kind of backup point guard... wait, doesn't D'Antoni love to play a maximum of 7 men right from the start of the season? Starters will play 40 minutes per game in a run'n'gun, up-tempo offense and the only bench players to step on the court will be Jamison and Meeks because they shoot threes. Let's see that epic collapse in the 2nd round.

There is no excuse for the Lakers to not score 120 a game this season.

...And give up 120.

Other than the fact they probably can't play at that pace.

When did he ever play that many minutes?

Woj says the Lakers "resist(ed) Jackson's power grab" while Jax himself alleges he was lied to during the negotiations.
