Moving NBA2k13 to a new computer

Postby imaiden on Sat Nov 10, 2012 9:06 pm

Hey guys! Since there are so many brilliant modders around here, this should probably a piece of cake for you... Do you know where NBA2k13 stores it's key? A mate of mine installed the game on a computer, which unfortunately is too weak to handle it properly, so he'd like to move it to a new computer. Ideally, it would've been a standard procedure, but in 2k13 you can't login to an existing account, when you reinstall the game, so how to just move it to another computer? Do you need to move the folder that NBA2k13 creates in users/appdata/roaming or would you need to copy the key from Windows register (regedit), I'd appreciate any info you could give me. The game directory goes without saying :)

I'd recommend copying the NBA 2K13 folder under Application Data (easily located in Windows using %appdata%).

Some information I have been given:

Save the USERNAME and PASSWORD line from windows registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> 2K Sports -> NBA 2K13)

This hold the password and user name for Myplayer account in registry to match on line.

Please post your finding when you do.

My situation is I reset my myplayer pasword in-game, as a result its mismatched with registry to online and now I get permanent 2K servers are down error, I have narrowed it down to password reset bug. So "in theory" I will need to reinstall the game, but im worried about it failing to log me back again and key issues also.

So please post what steps you talk if sucessful.

Has anyone ever uninstalled and re installed this game to new or same PC, and it was all fine? Has anyone ever fixed the password bug by reinstall? Im not running into doing this as I find this games install and account situation buggy.

Haven't tried it on 2K13 yet but 2K12 didn't possess (uninstalled/re-installed several times) this problem.

DondiWhite You might try to export your reg key for safety then delete the "NAME" and "PASSWORD" lines, then re enter your new name and pass.

You could import your new key but the password is encrypted and difficult to import for that reason, the name is not.

This is an export from XP SP3 32bit but Win7 and 64bit should be the same but no one should try to import this key as it won't work for you for a few reasons. This is just to show where to look in the registry for your own regkey.
Code: Select all
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\2K Sports\NBA 2K13]
"shoes"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Duke\\Application Data\\2K Sports\\NBA 2K13\\shoes\\"
"Online Data"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Duke\\Application Data\\2K Sports\\NBA 2K13\\Online Data\\"
"Saves"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Duke\\Application Data\\2K Sports\\NBA 2K13\\Saves\\"
"Cache"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Duke\\Application Data\\2K Sports\\NBA 2K13\\Cache\\"
"SetupLanguage"=dword:00000009
"USERNAME"="BlazerFan2013"
"PASSWORD"="********************************"

@Duke, Yes I have located that entry I already exported the NBA 2K13 entry for safe keeping.

I was also thinking the same. I assume that my actuall reg key is on server linked to my Myplayer account?

So, therefore if I remove those entries, the game will just load and then re ask me for my myplayer login info? I would then think by putting in the new password it should put that back into reg entry & then sync and not ask for serial number as its already linked to account.

Hmmm, as much as in my head that all seems logical I am reluctant to test it in case I get "serial already in use" error or some weird account mismatch error and never get to play game. Ive read on official forums this then means you need to request a new key from support and takes ages.

When you say re-enter name and password I assume you mean in the game not back in the reg as its hex.

Having said that, it MUST be the reg and account mismatch becuase it was after password change I get the network error (even though it does connect to network as I still get BNA today date & teams change per day).

I will chin stroke whether to attempt fate on this, would actually like to know someone who has done this and it worked ...................................................

UPDATE:

Ok I backed up the reg entry, and then deleted the user name & password fields from reg.

Upon loading game you get the reg Date Of Birth entry etc, and then option to login to existing account or start a new one.

I tried entering existing my player user name/password (which works on-line), all I get is "Account cannot be found" (Clearly a massive bug as I can login from web which means if I reinstalled I would never get the game to work again).

So then I tried new account, and all I got was "Reg key is already in use" (showing that key is tied to account fully)

** I then put reg entry back & ONLY deleted the password. When I loaded the game it loaded normally with usual 2k server error, so it proves its not logging into account or checking the password in the reg properly.

** I used a text to binary conversion tool to convert my correct password into binary string & then entered this into the reg password line, I still get server error, so it definitely looks like its online account issue than local as its not even referring to that password line.

I have come to the conclusion that once you reset the password the online account becomes not found by the game, so not only does your online my player account become unseen it also then wont revoke key locked to it.

So basicly NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES change your password for myplayer, its completely bugged and you will loose online features.

Id advise everyone to export that reg entry even though things are ok. As soon as I exited game, re imported the reg entry, loaded game, I was back in as normal but as normal 2k server error.

What worries me is how on earth do you uninstall this game and then install to a new account if key is locked to myplayer account & added the same account info = "account not found"? I dont see how 2K have setup a process to "Revoke" your key from that account, what very poorly implemented process. I can imagine if entering existing account would not error out, password would match and I would be back online again.

Anyway nothing more than 2K can advise now as I have tickets open, seems to me the only thing that can be done is them supplying a new reg key for the sake of a password change bug, dear oh dear.

Funny thing for me is, I only reset passwrd becuase 2k site would not log me in, only to find I never needed to do it anyway as I was looking at 2k12's myplayer site not 13 ... so I pretty much killed online for the game for no real reason ... :oops: (still 2k's bug though).

There is another place the key is stored that I found, its in the Users Hive, you may want to give it a try before giving up and waiting on 2K to resolve the issue, or maybe you are tired of messing with it. :)
I put X's in there to not confuse the issue, everyone's is different. You may want to search there, backup and del both and try again.
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-XXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX-XXX\Software\2K Sports\NBA 2K13]

In either case good luck getting online again.

EDIT, that reg entry is a mirror/duplicate, any change made in other reg entry instantly mirrors the same place.

Hi,

To be honest, the fact that when I start register process again and then try user name and password to enter my existing player account and it says "not found" I feel that removing anything else would be much the same as just simply un installing the game and re-installing it to remove those reg entries, and low and behold I will still need to re enter my existing account (tied to the key) which already says "not found".

So it seems to me that changing password actually causes your online account to fail/show as if its never registered (online server side account not offline). So no matter what my serial/key is tied to that account, and if I make a new one my key will be "already in use" ... so its a catch 22.

I am going to live with it for now and request a replacement key from 2k (not holding my breath) ... or request a reset of account. I could delete the my player account online which clears the key, although I have seen reports that doing this still shows "key already in use" error regardless, so id rather have offline features than a game I cant re install at the moment :)

Seeing as the servers and reg process is this buggy I dont want to end up completely stuck, lost my faith in things working as they are supposed to now :)

But thanks for you input it was helpfull. I will report back here with the next round of 2k shanigans if they ever get back to me on it.

Unfortunately you are correct, I mistakenly thought the SID took precedence over HKCU but after actually doing some study it really doesn't, just simply a mirror as you said. Keep us posted.
