Same thing Andrew said.

I've been following this the beginning when you beat Miami in the Finals and all. Just realized you have an All-Star team starting lineup :D. Good win here.

I don't even know how it happened. It was a close game and I didn't rest my starters. I think Blake's foul trouble gave Young extra minutes playing power forward and I just kept feeding him the ball. I've styled his look after Carmelo Anthony (apart from the afro) because he has roughly the same body type.

Knicks bring Z-Bo back to the Big Apple

Image

New York may have taken a big step towards ending Miami's dominance of the eastern conference today by trading for former player Zach Randolph.
The deal sees Randolph and Curtis Jerrells join the Knicks, whilst the Timberwolves get Ronny Turiaf, Brandon Rush and the Knicks' 2013 first round pick.
New York hope that Randolph will be the solution to their defensive rebounding problems and will allow Stoudemire and Anthony to focus on offense.
Both Randolph and Stoudemire are ranked in the top 15 players in the league for rebounding. Only Chicago's Chandler and Boozer can match that stat.
Given that they are in 'compete now' mode, taking on Jerrells' contract wasn't a big deal as he offers them another solid backup player on the bench.
This is Randolph's second stint as a Knick. His last one was marred by poor off-court behaviour, but Randolph says he's a different player today.
"I think I've matured a lot since those days", he said. "I'm not here to be the star. I'm just happy to be on a team that has a real shot at a title".

Minnesota complete their third deal in the last month. Their goal here was acquiring two expiring contracts and another pick in next year's draft.
It's a clear signal that their front office and coaching staff have fully given up on this season and are back to their familiar rebuilding mode.
Even if they can't attract big name free agents next season, re-signing Nene, Turiaf and Artest would still make them a strong defensive team.

Minnesota receive
Ronny Turiaf - 29 - PF - $13.09m - 1 year (81)
Brandon Rush - 27 - SG - $5.85m - 1 year (77)
Knicks' 2013 1st round pick

Projected line-up:
Nene - Ronny Turiaf - Ron Artest - Luke Ridnour - DJ Augustin
Bench options:
Wesley Johnson, Brandon Rush, Wayne Ellington, DeJuan Blair, Nenad Krstic

New York receive
Zach Randolph - 31 - PF - $57.60m - 4 years (84)
Curtis Jerrells - 25 - PG - $33.04m - 4 years (77)

Projected line-up:
Zach Randolph - Amare Stoudemire - Carmelo Anthony - Boris Diaw - Michael Conley
Bench options:
Curtis Jerrells, Joel Anthony, Renaldo Balkman, Anthony Randolph, Bill Walker, Toney Douglas

I would've said that's a lopsided deal, even as a cap clearing trade, but it looks like Turiaf has somehow developed into a pretty decent player.

Ah, but you forget that Turiaf and Nene can combine their dreadlocks and become twice as powerful. :bowdown2:

But seriously, I figured it worked for both teams because:
-the Knicks get a star forward that could put them over the top in the battle with Miami and New Jersey.
-the Timberwolves, who are failing miserably this season, get rid of a 31 year old who is owed $57m, a backup point guard who is owed $33m and get lots more cap flexibility. They've only got Augustin, Blair, Ellington and Johnson and some rookies under contract next season.

Turiaf
7.6 ppg - 11.6 rpg - 2.7 bpg
Rush
6.2 ppg

Randolph
15.0 ppg - 11.6 rpg
Jerrells
6.6 ppg - 3.3 apg

I guess no trade is ever perfectly even for both teams anyway.

That's true. Fair trades involving stars are certainly rare and when it comes to blockbusters that include top stars in the league, they've often been very lopsided.

Anyway, nice to see Young take home MVP honours in the Rookie Challenge. (Y)

Looks like it's Bosh's time to shine. I'd suggest he'll come up short in adding a Finals MVP trophy to his collection, though. ;)

Durant does seem to enjoy collecting those. Griffin ruined his streak last season too, so he'll be hungry to get that title back. :)

So now you've got a new challenge: 51 points with Durant, 40 with Rose, triple double by Griffin all in the same game. Extra points if it comes against the Nuggets in overtime but if you could simply get the first three, that'd be pretty cool.

We'll see. I'm a few games behind here as I'm a bit lazy when it comes to writing up the box scores. Those 3 are certainly capable of pulling it off.
A few tries at it couldn't hurt the chances of any of them being named MVP anyway. :)

Cavaliers position themselves for off-season spending spree with two deals

ImageImageImage

Cleveland have today committed to a major off-season rebuild after completing two deals that will give them a large amount of cap space next season.
Owner Dan Gilbert has decided to sacrifice the rest of this season in order to potentially put together a title challenging team in the off-season.
The Cavs will only have about $16m in guaranteed contracts next season. That gives them a massive $45m to spend on signing big name free agents.
One possible complication in their plan though is that star duo Chris Paul and Kevin Martin are amongst the players coming out of contract.

It's been suggested that the Cavs will look to add a 'big name' player or two in order to create their own 'big three', just as several other teams have.
One would think that players such as Monta Ellis, Ben Gordon, Andrew Bogut, Eric Gordon and Danny Granger would be at the very top of their list.
They may even tempt veterans like Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki or Paul Pierce to have one last title shot playing alongside Vincenzo Carlos.

Suns bring in Hawes as Cavs shed wages

Image

The first deal sees the Cavs acquire the expiring contracts of Hakim Warrick and Marcin Gortat from Phoenix for Spencer Hawes and Bobby Brown.
Although it is primarily a deal to get rid of guaranteed contracts, Warrick and Gortat could be a useful additions for the Cavs' slim playoff hopes.
As much as it was for bringing in new players, the cap room was needed to ensure that Chris Paul and Kevin Martin could be re-signed next season.
If they are able to re-sign the pair they will have a talented core including Vincenzo Carlos. Then if they sign someone like Bogut they'll be set.

Phoenix were delighted to receive Hawes as they've lacked a natural center since Robin Lopez left a few seasons ago for Detroit.
Brown adds a backup point guard to their bench. Something they've lacked since Chris Duhon was promoted to starting shooting guard.
With all-star Travis Outlaw in great form and a solid bench, Phoenix look set to make a serious assault on the playoffs this season.

Image Image

Cleveland receive
Hakim Warrick - 30 - PF - $4.96m - 1 year (76)
Marcin Gortat - 28 - C - $7.73m - 1 year (74)

Projected line-up:
Hakim Warrick - Anderson Varejao - Vincenzo Carlos - Kevin Martin - Chris Paul
Bench options:
Steve Blake, Thabo Sefolosha, Javed Abdur Salam, Marcin Gortat, Cole Aldrich, Christian Eyenga

Image Image

Phoenix receive
Spencer Hawes - 24 - C - $30.76m - 3 years (82)
Bobby Brown - 28 - PG - $11.71m - 2 years (78)

Projected line-up:
Spencer Hawes - Travis Outlaw - Jared Dudley - Chris Duhon - Aaron Brooks
Bench options:
Martell Webster, Bobby Brown, Chris Douglas Roberts, Udonis Haslem, Josh Childress, DJ White

----------

Cavs continue wage shedding by sending Varejao to Orlando

Image

The Cavs' second deal of the day involves Brazilian forward Anderson Varejao heading to Orlando for Hedo Turkoglu and a first round pick.
Turkoglu's contract is expiring and the draft pick is the one that the Magic got from Phoenix in the off-season in exchange for Chris Duhon.
They probably could have gotten an established player for Varejao, but the lure of taking a big chunk off their wage bill proved to good to pass up.
As well as cap room, the Cavs now have two potential top 20 picks in next year's draft. They are bulding a nice collection of promising young talent.

Orlando add another player to their impressive frontcourt. They now have Oden, Thompson, Monroe, Haywood and Varejao competing for spots.
Varejao is a perfect pick up for them considering that Oden is injury prone, Haywood is getting old and Monroe is still developing into an NBA player.
The Magic are currently fighting for 8th seed with the Cavs, Celtics, Raptors and Bobcats. They'll hope this deal gives them an extra boost.

Image

Cleveland receive
Hedo Turkoglu - 33 - SF - $12.20m - 1 year (69)
Suns' 1st round draft pick (via Orlando)

Projected line-up:
Marcin Gortat - Hakim Warrick - Vincenzo Carlos - Kevin Martin - Chris Paul
Bench options:
Steve Blake, Thabo Sefolosha, Javed Abdur Salam, Hedo Turkoglu, Cole Aldrich, Christian Eyenga

Image

Orlando receive
Anderson Varejao - 30 - PF - $18.74m - 2 years (76)
Cavs' 2nd round draft pick

Projected line-up:
Greg Oden - Jason Thompson - Michael Redd - JJ Redick - Jordan Farmar
Bench options:
Rodrigue Beaubois, Anderson Varejao, Greg Monroe, Brendan Haywood, Eric Bledsoe, Gary Forbes, Keith Bogans

Dan Gilbert writes letter to fans

Image

Outspoken Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert has today written another letter to his team's fan base in regards to their recent trade deals.
It is far less controversial than his infamous post-'decision' rant directed at former Cavs star LeBron James. He does merit a mention though.

Hornets at the center of five-team deadline day trade

Image

As it always seems to be, the biggest and most talked about deal of deadline week happened only hours before the trade deadline passed.
This mega-deal has surprised a lot of people. The five teams involved are LA Lakers, Memphis, New Orleans, Sacramento and Washington.
Apparently this started out as two separate deals but got merged when a fifth team was needed as both original deals didn't quite work.
Lakers' GM Mitch Kupchak supposedly was in talks with Sacramento and New Orleans over a three-way deal centred around Gasol and Cousins.
When talks seemed to stall Hornets GM Dell Demps decided to bring Memphis and Washington into the discussions to get the deal done.

Lakers had been shopping Gasol for the past month and with both he and Kobe getting older and on expiring contracts, they wanted to get younger.
There is a feeling in Los Angeles that Kobe will leave the Lakers at the end of the season and that Andrew Bynum will become the new team leader.
They are looking to build around Bynum, Brandon Jennings and Jrue Holiday. Adding DeMarcus Cousins gives them an imposing looking frontcourt.

Memphis lose Gasol, but gain a younger more athletic center to replace him. McGee's style should complement guys like Mayo and Gay.
Kidd and Pachulia were also traded as they were frustrated at being third choice. They should both play important roles for the Wizards.
The Grizzlies are currently in a good position and with this freshening up of their roster look set to possibly even challenge for 2nd seed.

New Orleans create a talented Spanish trio. Reports suggest they tried to also get Jose Calderon from Milwaukee but lacked the trade pieces.
Star player Rudy Fernandez is reported to have proposed the idea of bringing Pau to New Orleans and then later suggested Marc as well.
Fernandez was the key to this deal for the Hornets. Once he convinced Pau to join him, the pair had long conversations with Marc too.
Despite losing star players Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor a couple of seasons ago, the Hornets are looking solid for the 4th seed out west.

Sacramento get rid of Cousins and add some quality players to their bench. Cousins should fit in in LA as he always wanted to be the star.
The outspoken forward had been a thorn in the side of Kings' management and had publicly undermined coach Paul Westphal multiple times.
They bring in two versatile players in Thornton and Ariza and Yi adds some more depth to their already impressive frontcourt rotation.
Playoff basketball is far from guaranteed for them though. They will have to integrate quickly to help their new team achieve that goal.

Washington balance out their roster and add a good scorer to play alongside Wall. McGee hadn't really progressed since they drafted him.
Their hopes of making the playoffs this season were all but gone too so they decided to go for a different approach with Thornton.
Big money earners like Josh Howard, Rashard Lewis, Luis Scola and Courtney Lee all come out of contract at the end of next season.
Maybe the Wizards are planning their own free agent bonanza when the likes of Durant, Rose, Aldridge, Rondo and Roy are free agents.

Trade deadline passes with a few surprises

Image

Trade deadline week threw up some interesting deals. The main talking point this year was the Hornets getting the Gasol brothers.
Some teams looking for that final piece to challenge for a title, whilst others are looking to the future with free agency and drafts.

Some big changes there. It'll be interesting to see if the real Pau is moving on before the deadline.

It would be creepy if he got traded to the Hornets. Probably not very likely though.

I've got a double-header in New Orleans soon. Should get a good idea how that trade worked out for them.
