Julius Erving Greatest Player Challenge

Tue Oct 25, 2011 6:53 pm

Just a little explanation for anybody that wondered about it like i did :

I just kept thinking about this one, as i just won first 3 out of 15 Greatest Player games, and when i start Julius Erving one, 1st thing i realised that team that Phili is playing against, the Bucks of 84-85 are MUCH BETTER on paper than Phli, offensively and defensively. Yet commentators kept sayin that Phili of 84-85 season was such a dominant offensive team, while, looking at the roster, you see no great shooters, aging Moses Malone and only Julius Erving can somehow create his own shot. While Bucks had Hodges, Monchrief, Cummings (LOL), Pressey and Lister. They light you up every time, as their outside shooting combined with Terry Cummings' inside and rebounding prowess keep you guessing while they also have some great defensive players.

I kept thinking that something was missing on that 84-85 Phili team, that they couldn't be so bad on paper while being one of the best teams of all-time. Sure enough, i forgot
about Sir Charles :D But then, he isn't in the game. Pretty good article written about it too : http://kotaku.com/5833796/why-charles-b ... n-nba-2k12

I just wonder, if they couldn't get Barkley, wouldn't it be easier for them to get the championship Philly team without Barkley square off against Blazers, for example? How am i supposed to win that damn game when Bucks outmatch me almost at every position? XD

That's something that was discussed when the included teams were first announced. It's an odd decision and the '83 championship team would've been more appropriate, but the theory is that including the '85 team would've been a way to get another great in the game in Barkley, but ultimately they couldn't get a deal done by which point they'd already committed to the 1985 team.

Just play on rookie, one minute quarters and cheese with Erving. I went this route for all of them after Shaq and Robinson wouldn't stop making laughing stocks of Foster no matter what so I could unlock the opposing teams. (Most of whom I wanted over the legend teams.)

hahaha, i see bro, but still, i wanna beat the game, you know what i mean... NBA Greatest is currently the only offline playable mode, aside from association, but in association rookies got all cold zones, so they don't play up to par. Till lockout finishes and the online patch comes, i really don't know what to do with NBA 2k

You could do always just tone it down for the ones you can't beat at least if you want the teams, I even had trouble with a couple using that method, like the Sonics kept hitting open three pointers thanks to the AI. I had five or six double overtime games just doing the one minute quarters. Although I wasn't taking it too seriously since it was just one minute quarters and I could fire it up and play another five minutes.

You can feed Toney and use Cheeks who is good. The Bucks were actually one of the best teams of the all time they could just never get past the Sixers or Celtics.

As you noted, the Bucks are clearly better by rank that season:
Sixers: 4th offense, 10th defense, 4th SRS, 4th Pythag
Bucks: 6th offense, 2nd defense, 1st SRS, 2nd Pythag

I think it is as Andrew noted, they were going to throw in Barkley and he screwed it up, that team is a good chunk of the '83 team so they just didn't care enough about it since they already had the '85 guys signed since they do have to do everyone individually. It does stand out as one of the weirder challenges, like how both of the Jazz ones unlock the same team, and neither unlocks the best Spurs or Lakers team. (And they weren't even rivalries with those teams, when you think of the Jazz you think of them battling the Sonics and Rockets (Barkley again!) in my opinion anyway.)

"You can feed Toney and use Cheeks who is good."

The problem with that is, Andrew Toney ain't in the game either.
Bobby Jones and Clint Richardson were both much better defenders than Barkley and Toney though. So this challenge is mostly about shutting the other team down on offense, and running the fast break. If you do get stuck playing half-court either pick and roll with Cheeks or just cheese the low post game with Moses.

Thanks guys, i beat the challenge with big help of right stick defense, finally learned how not to foul inside all the time :D Without cheese free throws, i was able to get the win pretty easy on Super Star level, so that's maybe what i am sticking with now :D Erving had 40 points, 9 boards, 4 steals = MVP :D
