Can't play #%#%$^ defense in this game!

This is ridiculous. If you're the guy guarding the ball, you can't play d at all. All the guy needs to do is move left or right and pull up. You cannot react fast enough to stop him. Thanks to them getting rid of the defensive assist button, you just cannot stop anyone. They've made this game NBA Jam.

Not only that, the 3-pointers are dropping at an insane rate. If you get a somewhat open shot and a proper release, you cannot miss. It's such a joke.

I've havent had a problem playing defense.. Are you sure its just not you?

I haven't had problems with defense. As long as you stay on your man and remember to switch, I'm always fine.

maybe you forget to play man to man on defense...

A) Increase help defense if your getting beat 1on1 too much. As soon as help starts rotating they'll back off and reset. (coach settings)
B) There is a help defense slider in there somewhere. I think maybe under controller settings.

I haven't really tried it yet though to be honest. My problems on defense are my teammates AI.

Man-to-man defense seems a lot easier for me in this game than 2K11. Not only that, Real Player FG% will solve your 3 pointer problem. (in addition to making the gameplay better and more accessible)

Do you use LT+RT to quick shuffle your feet on Defense?. I dont see how you cant hang in there with descent frequency guarding a quick player unless you misjudged his direction.

i'm playin the PC version and DAMN.. it's so f***in hard playin defense.. i have difficulty calling plays, i can't even call 2-3 zone.. i'm havin difficulty figuring out the controls.. that's it. any help?

The defensive assist option present before 2K12 is retarded IMO.

Real Player FG% will solve your 3 pointer problem. (in addition to making the gameplay better and more accessible)

Lamrock should be banned for a day for saying silly things.
Shotstick is the way to go!

I was having trouble before, but adapted as humans usually do. Hold LT and get ready to press RT when the ballhandler starts his movement. Whenever a ballhandler changes direction, let go of RT so you don't slide too far. I find it easier to cut off drives by backing up as well as sliding laterally. If they are driving, try to get them into a bump animation and try to steal the ball. Also, never press in the direction of the ballhandler unless you are closing out space that you have given by backing up to cut off the drive. Don't be afraid to take a charge this year. You can get the call.

It seems as though using the right thumb stick to contest shots works better than the delayed Y button animations. You can actually combine them sometimes by starting with the right stick, and then pressing the Y button as you get closer. I bet they delayed the Y button blocks because the IK technology may have been too powerful at finding the ball.

For post defense, there is a basic tutorial in the training camp feature. To defend any drive or spin moves out of the post, you have to wait till the post player starts their move, and then press in the exact left/right direction relative to where your player was facing during the post-up animation. I tried pressing in the direction that the player is actually moving as animated, but it doesn't work. It's a very awkward mechanic.

Can somebody tell me how to pull the chair on a guy who backs down on me? Is it just holding the left stick away from the player?

yep thats what it says in the controls. I guess you would have to time it right when he is doing the agressive backddown.

Hey, this helps a lot. Looks like other people had the same problem with the default settings too. I hate that the training video forces you to do every practice session in sequence. I never got to the defense tutorial cause I didn't want to keep going through the full post up move practice.

Andrew, this video is awesome! I had no idea the D was so detailed this year. Everyone with problems playing D needs to see it. It's like a mini game within the game.

One thing that still bugs me is not that my wing defenders collapse to the basket as soon as there's a drive, but that the guy who drives finds the free man EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME! When I try to do the same thing, I kick it out to the free guy, but he takes so long to catch the damn ball that the defense has time to rotate. The AI never does that. Does anybody know if lowering the CPU's hands slider will do anything?

From my experience, the more you play the game the easier it becomes to play defense.

I can acutally get 10 steals in a 5min game all star setting with default simulation sliders using the 96 bulls usually against the ball handler.
If you time your steals correctly you can get steals and easy points off fast breaks. If the ball handler is on the perimeter outside the three point line, I usally put the defender as close as I can to the ball handler and bump him.

Another thing I found out is, it is more effective to control the defender instead of letting the CPU play defense. If the opponent is shooting, jumping up will increase the chance of forcing a miss shot. And on fast breaks, if you time your block, you can acutualy get blocks from behind. If you press steal sometimes, you can get a fast break steal too.

IMO, there's really no need to adjust the sliders if you practice and improve your game.

I completely agree. Defense rotates ridiculously fast. I get so pissed when I get someone a wide open shot, and by the time my guy gets the ball and shoots, the defender is on top of him. WTH? 2k11 had the perfect balance. I had plays where I swung the ball through 3 guys around the perimeter (like in real life) laughing as I watched the defenders scramble to get to the open guy. In 2k12, I haven't once been able to do that. I've had wide open 3's BLOCKED!


Players run as fast as the ball travels now.

Oh trust me, steals are NOT the problem. It's on ball defense. Too many ridiculous steals on default sliders.

heh, I disagree. Getting open 3s in 2k12 isn't that hard. Stop playing basketball and play the video game, you'll find flaws and then exploit it. Paul Pierce doesn't have the quickest release in the game, yet if I have 4 feet of room between him and the Defender, swish, swish, swish.

It's a lot easier to get open 3's in this game the way the defense collapses, that is if you can get into the paint.

I agree generally, but God, getting in the paint is way too easy on 2k12 once u get it down. I had games where 75 % of my points came from there, and i honestly wasn't even cheesing, just taking what defense gives me, and they always leave the paint free for big guys and they foul a lot if just get into the position.
