NEW YORK -- Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is once again the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the 2011-12 NBA Most Valuable Player presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today.
Bryant, who earned the honor both last season as well as the 2007-08 season, totaled 1,179 points, including 113 first-place votes, from a panel of 120 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada as well as an NBA MVP fan vote. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five for third, three for fourth and one for each fifth-place vote received.
Rounding out the top five in voting for this season's award are New Orleans Guard Chris Paul (643 points), Chicago Bulls Guard Derrick Rose (599 points), Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard (478 points), and Miami Heat Guard Dwyane Wade (119 points).
Bryant finished the season with the highest scoring average in the NBA at 30.0 ppg, having shot 52% from the field, 87% from the free-throw line and an amazing 44% from three-point range. In addition, Bryant added 4.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists, as well as 2.2 steals per game. The 6-6 guard led the Lakers to the best record in the NBA (69-13), and the franchise’s 22nd Pacific Division title.
The NBA MVP trophy is named in honor of the late Maurice Podoloff, the first commissioner of the NBA who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963.
The 2011-12 NBA Most Valuable Player Award presented by Kia Motors is part of a series of on court performance awards called "The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors." The series, currently in its fourth season, is a significant part of the multiyear marketing partnership between Kia Motors America and the NBA, and also includes the Most Improved Player, Defensive Player and Sixth Man of the Year awards, along with the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month.

2012 NBA Playoffs Preview: Conference Finals
Western Conference
2. New Orleans Hornets (66-16) v 5. Dallas Mavericks (49-33)
Key Rotation
New Orleans Hornets: Chris Paul | Ben Gordon| Al Harrington | David West | Emeka Okafor | Kemba Walker | Anthony Morrow
Dallas Mavericks: Jason Kidd | Caron Butler | Shawn Marion | Dirk Nowitzki | Marc Gasol | Jason Terry | Rodrigue Beaubois
Comment: Did anybody expect the Mavericks to get this far? Dallas pulled off the unthinkable in the Second Round by knocking off the three time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, who had won a league-best 69 games this season, and they did it in spectacular fashion. Dirk Nowitzki's multiple 40+ point games as well as Jason Kidd's record setting assist games were huge in their battle against the reigning MVP Kobe Bryant in the previous round, can they pull off an upset yet again against another 60+ win team in the Chris Paul-led Hornets? Mark Cuban and the rest of Texas are certainly hoping that's the case.
ESPN Prediction: Hornets in 6
Eastern Conference
1. Orlando Magic (61-21) v 2. Chicago Bulls (60-22)
Key Rotation
Orlando Magic: Jameer Nelson | Vince Carter | Rashard Lewis | Brandon Bass | Dwight Howard | Mickael Pietrus | Dejuan Blair
Chicago Bulls: Derrick Rose | Kirk Hinrich | Luol Deng | Carlos Boozer | Joakim Noah | Shaquille O'Neal | Kyle Korver
Comment: The Bulls have made it back to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1998, and they have done it in dominating fashion; first sweeping the Boston Celtics before eliminating Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat in 5 games. Their ability to advance to the Finals will rest on whether Joakim Noah and Shaquille O'Neal could slow down and limit the production of Dwight Howard via single coverage and prevent Orlando's three-ball from going hot. However, if they fail to do so, the Bulls will have a hard time returning to the Finals while the Magic will be making their third trip in franchise history.
ESPN Prediction: Bulls in 6
