A Spurs rampage in the 4th; (and just like in real life) clinch West with win over Kings
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAC :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, April 6 -- Manu Ginobili expects to rest during this Saturday game against Utah, a well-earned reward for leading the Spurs to home-court advantage throughout the playoffs in the West. Manu continued his good form scoring 21 points and five rebounds, as the Spurs defeated a non-surrender Sacramento Kings team, 115-98. “It's a big step,” said Ginobili. “When you consider all the great teams, all the great players in the conference, for us to finish with the best record is a tremendous milestone. Something the franchise should be proud of.” With his squad having clinched the top record in the West with three games left in the schedule, coach Gregg Popovich will likely make the Argentinian and perhaps another key player spectators against the Jazz. Popovich already rested Tim Duncan the last three games, and will return against Deron Williams and company. “We've got to do what's best for the ring,” said Duncan, who was on street clothes watching the game. “We're not fighting for breaking a record anymore. We're fighting for a new trophy.” The Spurs shot 57 percent from the field, had 31 assists on 42 field goals and also won the rebounding (40-28).

“The team to beat? The Lakers,” said Tony Parker, who earned POTG honors with 13 points. “Until you knock off the NBA champs, that's the team to defeat.” Tonight's performance likely was one of Parker's last chances to impress the organization for a contract extension. He shot 5-for-9 from the field and also had twelve assists, for his second double-double in a row. Sacramento's Rodney Stuckey, who had a game-high 26 points for the Kings, believes San Antonio's Big 3 makes San Antonio the team to beat, despite the Miami Heat's recent explosion. “I think Manu and Tony separate the Spurs from other teams,” he said. Other Spurs were strong as well -- the match was a thriller, a back-and-forth affair, until George Hill appeared. Wisely, Popovich chose to play Chris Quinn when Parker needed to rest, and leave Hill for the most-important quarter of all, the fourth. Hill played the last minute of the third and the entire last period, posting a plus-minus of +25, with 6 points and four assists; his defense on Stuckey was flawless in a 15-2 run for the Spurs that essentially gave them the victory. Tiago Splitter, battling foul trouble, only had four points, but Drew Gooden came up for him -- he and Corey Maggette added 18 points each for San Antonio, which won its seven straight game.

Sacramento had already been eliminated from the playoff race before tonight, but had been playing particularly well on offense and surprised the Spurs in the first half, even with Tyreke Evans suffering a strained achilles in the second quarter and not returning to the court; Evans had 15 points before leaving. But Popovich said his team simply gave its usual effort. “This group for the most part has been very focused. They've been in tune to what the task was at hand, and no matter who the opponent was, they just tried to bring it, and with good results.” Sacramento led 53-50 at halftime, before San Antonio closed the third quarter with a 10-2 run during which Ginobili and Maggette scored four points apiece to take a 80-78 lead; Hill made the buzzer-beater. A baseline tomahawk dunk by Maggette got the fans out of their seats and gave the Spurs a 100-86 lead. Francisco Garcia (14 points for the Kings) stepped back to drain a 3 from the left wing, but Gooden made a 3-point play for a 110-91 score, and put the game out of reach for Sac-Town. Maggette said he doesn't think the team needs to change anything to have similar success in the playoffs. “If you ask me, we have to sacrifice our bodies and rely on our bread and butter, which is defense. The finish line is just right there.” San Antonio can still get it throughout the entire playoffs if the Miami Heat suffer a setback or two in the last week of the season; the Heat have four games left and are only 0.5 games ahead with a 60-18 record.

Thanks man, the Kings surprised me even when Evans was out. Cousins and Thompson were all hustle and blocked quite some shots...

Again, as you guys can see, I ain't having much time lately. I just want to recap the last three games so I can end the season recapping all 82 :cheeky: I might post, like badreligionau does, a couple of playoff games together or something.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat

And the award for Best Saga goes to... Tony Parker
    nba.com/spurs/beat | April 8th, 2011

SAN ANTONIO -- One of the biggest sagas of recent NBA memory is over: Tony Parker finally agreed to re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs. Per usual, details of the extension didn't surface. The Frenchman will stay in San Antonio for the rest of his prime (he is only 28, if you look at this birth certificate). Finally the Spurs organization can avoid that whole bag of questions about Parker’s future and the trade rumors that went along this uncertainty back in 2010. It was obvious that Tony is back to the form that made him the NBA Finals MVP four years ago, looking at his performances of the last three months. Gone are the injuries that slowed him down last season. Parker began 2010-11 saying this was likely the Big Three's last chance at a fourth championship together because of Tim Duncan's age.

When the playoffs start, Duncan will be 35 and the final year of his contract is threatened by a potential lockout for 2011-12. But the Spurs are, without a doubt, looking ahead: Parker's contract marks the team's third contract extension since April, when Manu Ginobili signed on for three more years and Matt Bonner for four. Tony has spent his entire career with the Spurs, joining the team when he was 19 years old, and the very next season, helped lead the Spurs to their first of three NBA titles in five years. But foot injuries and a broken hand last season derailed him from the marvellous form he showed back in the days. Even so, coach Gregg Popovich thinks Parker might still have his best years in front of him. “Everybody would say 28 years old is close to a peak age,” Pop said. “But TP is a character guy and I just don't know what else to say about him. It's reflected in this new deal. That's how I feel.” The Spurs’ front office, headed by Popovich, team owner Thierry Tirieux and general manager R.C. Buford, have their eyes on continuity. To them, it is comforting to know the team that will face the Utah Jazz tomorrow, in their 80th game of the season, will look very similar to the team that will take the floor for the next couple of seasons.

The extension is for 4 years, one year longer than Ginobili's deal. Other players like rookies Tiago Splitter (locked up for at least the next three years) and James Anderson (four seasons), DeJuan Blair and George Hill (if their deals are extended following their rookie contracts), and Corey Maggette (two more), are also here for the long haul. This squad is built to be a playoff contender for years to come. But the lockout threat that has been in the air in recent years could have influenced Parker’s decision to sign an extension instead of testing free agency waters. Despite all this “saga” with the Spurs board, the fact that he signed this new contract and didn’t force a sign-and-trade to another team should affirm his commitment. To prove it, his new deal goes from $9 million to $11 million a season, a considerable pay cut from the $13.5 million he is earning this season.

Well yeah, I already rested Tim for the last three games and he comes back against Utah. But I'll surely rest Manu for the game. Then a game against the Lakers, where I'll rest Blair or Splitter, and then the Suns for the last game, where Maggette will stay back in street clothes. I've got all planned out

Tomorrow -- no work at all. Jazz recap!

Manu rests but Jazz get dismantled by the Spurs; Splitter, Neal lead blowout
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (UTAH :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, April 9 -- A comfortable home victory on the eve of the playoffs allowed Tiago Splitter and the San Antonio Spurs a small moment of relax. Splitter scored 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Spurs to a blowout of the Utah Jazz, 106-78. “This is, without a doubt, the best basketball I've played in my life,” said the Brazilian. “I'm having a blast. This are the kind of games where my confidence really gets going and I start feeling like I can make any shot.” He almost did, going 9-of-12 from the field and his only free throw attempt. “We needed the win to get momentum and gain more confidence going into the postseason,” he added. Tim Duncan, returning from a three-game rest, added 14 points, four boards and two blocks as the Spurs won their eighth straight game and an incredible 19th victory in their last 20 games; the Spurs took a 27-12 lead entering the second period and never looked back. “Our defense was top notch from the start,” said Duncan. “Our bench was outstanding, we were great on the boards and in turn that got us this nice, comfortable triumph.” San Antonio had five players in double figures.

Gary Neal added 13 points off the bench, shooting 6-of-7 from the field for a plus-minus of +16. When the rookie has an open shot, Tony Parker wants him to not hesitate. “People are going to leave him for that shot, I don't get it,” the Frenchman. “He loves to line it up and we love for him to take open jumpers. He has saved us more than once this year.” Parker and Corey Maggette had 12 points apiece; Maggette struggled with his shot, 5-of-14 field goals, but his excellent defense on Utah's Andrei Kirilenko gave him a game-high plus-minus of +26. San Antonio, using their bench (that defeated Utah's, 53-20) opened a 32-point advantage midway through the final frame. Two 30-point quarters, the second and the fourth, helped give the Spurs the easy victory -- and all of this without Manu Ginobili, who was given a rest for this game. Larry Hughes, who started in place of Manu, had nine points. The starters rested almost the entire fourth quarter -- until the end, only Hughes remained in for San Antonio, which also had 47 rebounds, including eight from Maggette, to Utah's 31.

“They're a superb team, period,” said Kirilenko, who was held to five points. “They just show how far ahead they are of us... and all of this without Manu. We've got a lot more learning to do. A lot more improving to do for the playoffs.” The Jazz missed eight of their first ten shots and fell behind 20-4 with five minutes left in the first quarter. Al Jefferson was 1-of-8 in the first half but had his way for 20 points and ten rebounds to lead Utah. “We couldn't keep up with their offense,” said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do. They got out and ran, made jumpers, treys, free throws, and kept us at bay, flawlessly. Their bench outscored out best three players. That was the killing blow.” Allen Iverson, despite suffering a broken finger in the first quarter, returned and added 18 points. Deron Williams completed the double-figure trio for the Jazz, with 13 points and ten assists. “We played right into their game plan,” said Iverson. “They are a great offensive and defensive team. The whole package. Every time we doubled on Tim they found the open man on the wing. And they shot well from the 3-point line. It's not fun getting blown out by 30 points.”

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Thierry's Morning Coffee

Postby kibaxx7 on Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:09 am

Weekly Rewind N° 24 • Last week of the season! Playoffs ahead...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | April 10th, 2011

    Image
SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

Big battle between San Antonio and Lakers • Big game this Tuesday for the San Antonio Spurs: a clash of the titans with the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center. The Spurs already locked the 1st seed in the Western Conference, but trail in the season series against Kobe Bryant & company. Manu Ginobili, who was rested for the game against the Utah Jazz, participated in the morning shootaround today and will return. Tony Parker and Matt Bonner appeared to be fine after they collisioned today in the shootaround, so coach Gregg Popovich should have his full roster in Los Angeles -- with the exception of DeJuan Blair, who has been practicing but isn't expected to travel; it's his time to rest. Popovich said that he will give rest to all his starters during April, and he's proving it. In addition to Ginobili, Tim Duncan rested the previous three games; Parker already had a sort of rest in March, when he was suspended for three games; and Corey Maggette will rest in the final game of the season, this Wednesday at Phoenix.

There's an air of uncertainty as how Lakers coach Phil Jackson will approach this game, since Jackson has also been resting up his players as they get ready for the postseason -- Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum all played fewer than 25 minutes last night in their win at Portland (100-87; 25 points by Shannon Brown) and didn't play at all last Wednesday against Utah, in a 110-106 overtime loss. Bottom line, the Lakers have won five of their last six games and they really don't need the win, having wrapped up the 2nd seed -- but the rivalry between this two teams is always bigger. Both teams surely have memories of that last meeting back in March, when the Spurs played a perfect second half, boosted by six players in double figures. What the Lakers will have to prove that they are capable of doing is winning a season series against the team with the second best record in basketball. Right now, only one team has a winning record against the Spurs. Which team? You guessed it: the Lakers, at 2-1. They could become the only team with three wins over the Spurs this season with a victory.

Players of the Week • The New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul and the Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played April 3 - 9. Paul and the Hornets had a 2-1 week -- with wins over Indiana and Houston and a last-minute loss against Phoenix. In the victory over the Pacers, CP3 flirted with a triple-double, posting 18 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists; in the win over the Rockets, he went berserk with 25 points, eight boards, 15 assists and six steals. He closed the week with 24 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in a loss to the Suns, and finished the week with averages of 22.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and a whopping 13.3 assists. Miami's Wade averaged 26.6 points along with 6.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.6 steals, as the Heat posted a perfect 3-0 week -- with victories over New Jersey and Milwaukee, and a thumping 40-point triumph over Charlotte.

Power RankingsBest teams of the week? San Antonio (4-0), Miami (3-0), Oklahoma City (3-0), Chicago (3-0), Philadelphia (3-0), LA Lakers (3-1). The worst? Toronto (1-3), LA Clippers (1-3), Charlotte (1-3), Detroit (1-3), Phoenix (1-3), Sacramento (1-3), Golden State (0-2). High jumps -- Minnesota (+3), New York (+3), Oklahoma City (+2), Portland (+2), Milwaukee (+2), Philadelphia (+2). Free falls -- Sacramento (-6), Indiana (-3), Phoenix (-2), Golden State (-2), Chicago (-1), Boston (-1). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here -- Heat, Lakers, Spurs, Magic, Celtics, Thunder and Bulls all repeat the Super Seven, with Oklahoma City, Chicago and Boston mixing it up a little on their spots.

Injury report • Sorted by injuries with most duration, here you can check the full injury report. Milwaukee Bucks swingman Michael Redd will miss the remainder of the season with a broken finger, Bucks coach Scott Skiles announced. Redd looks to have played his last game ever with the Bucks, as some rumors point out he'd like to try his game on a championship-contending team before his body says enough. Houston Rockets bigman Jordan Hill is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks with a broken toe and will miss the first round of the playoffs, the Rockets announced. It was initially thought Hill sprained his toe, but additional X-rays revealed a fracture.

Nope, didn't edit, just saying I gave him a smaller salary than his real life extension. I thought it was too much.

I see. Great work with the lower salary.

Sad to see the last cup of Spurbucks Coffee, but now I'm hyped for the post-season. Tank the last two games to match San Antonio in real life!

Championship Game
(W1) Texas 63 vs. (E1) Duke 53

With the chips all in, only 40 minutes left of basketball left in the NCAA season, Axel Gomez did it all. The Texas Longhorns won their first title as Gomez once again showed his versatility in a 63-53 win over the Duke Blue Devils, who couldn't repeat last season's championship. Scoring? Gomez had eight points, all in the second half. Rebounds? Four boards, all in the first half. Assisting? A game-high eight dimes; in the middle of a swarm of defenders, he repeatedly found the open Longhorn for baskets and alley-oops. Defense? Two blocks, and he was the main responsable of Will Sit's poor 0-for-6 shooting and Duke's 3-minute scoring drought in the third period. Without a doubt, Gomez won NCAA Finals MVP honors. “It's an incredible feeling to do it here with our fans,” said Gomez. “To be here, have an opportunity to win in front of our fans, give our fans kind of a treat, it's great for them, it's great for this team.”

Mason Plumlee was the only player in double-figures for Duke, with 10 points. Lance Thomas and Kyle Singler scored only eight points each, while Jon Scheyer had seven; Singler and Scheyer shot a combined 7-of-31 from the field and 0-of-8 from beyond the arc. In fact, the whole Duke team was 0-of-21 from 3-point land. “I missed shots I take every day and shots I usually make every day,” said Scheyer. “They made them, then we didn't. That's the bottom line of this. We lost our composure.” The Longhorns didn't lead the first quarter until the very last play, a dunk by Alexis Wangmene for a 14-13 score, and then found themselves trailing, 27-23, after Nolan Smith made a jumper. But the lead was a contested 33-31 at halftime, after Justin Mason ran down a loose ball and found Shawn Williams completely open for a trey, in the last play of the first half. But then Gomez decided that was enough. Matt Hill made two free throws and had a layup off a feed from Gomez. Gomez then drained a jumper to give Texas the lead for good at 41-33 and never look back again, in the way for the NCAA trophy.

Gomez's teammates and coach Rick Barnes sounded just as happy. “I'm just thrilled that Axel ended his NCAA career with a game like that,” said Barnes. “His effort was perfect. He showed how important it was to him to help us get this victory and I have no doubt that, any team that picks him in the Draft this June, will pick a hard-working guy who never gives up, no matter the circumstances.” The Blue Devils are also saying goodbye to a player -- Sit, who is heading to the NBA Draft as well, was perfectly defended by Gomez, who held him scoreless, but Sit had five rebounds and four assists. Williams led his team in scoring with 13 points, four rebounds and six assists. Wangmene posted a double-double with 10 points and ten rebounds for the Longhorns, who shot just 40 percent from the field, and won the glass battle 45-40, won in the paint 40-36 and their bench was better at 22-20. “A really contested game,” added coach Barnes. “They really created a lot of problems for us, as was evidenced if you look at the stats. The key was our defense in the third.”

Thanks a lot man. Yeah last coffee, at least until next season. Gooden has been posting great numbers lately, he goes into the playoffs with the best form. And Maggs, well, hopefully he can repeat one of those two 100% FG nights.

Bad shooting night for both Sit and Axel. Adding to the insult, Sit bricked all of his shots
