Controller Question...

I know many other people have asked about this, I was searching through the message board. I do not own a PS2, but am looking for the best gamepad to use for NBA Live as well as other games on my PC
I have read that if you get a USB adapter for a PS2 controller, it works for the PC, is this true? If it is, will it work with any other game on PC?
I also read about some people loving the Thrustmaster gamepad.
Currently have the Old Microsoft Sidewinder regular gamepad, not the pro. All it has is a Dpad. I want to take advantage of the Freestyle moves in this game.
I need a suggestion, what do you think I'd be better off doing, getting a PS2 controller with adapter? Will PS1 controllers work the same?

it will work with every game! Its acts just like a regular controller. I use it for Fifa 2003 also - albeit you have to rearrange the buttons...
Does it work under XP?
