I've been there before. My advice would be to get it checked out ASAP, otherwise you're in for more sleepness nights.

I don't think many people enjoy it. From personal experience, it definitely beats the pain though.

and I'm safe. Transferred 20mi away to the Vermont office but a lot of higher ups got the ax while me and my buddy are staying on. Our office got 50% laid off (7 people yesterday, head boss staying, us 2, and a project manager is staying part time)

that was a scary 4 hours.....

Re: The Letting Off Steam Thread

I'll bet. I'm guessing the transfer isn't exactly ideal but obviously a lot better than getting the axe.

actually, we were looking, at turned down for no real reason, at an apartment in that town just to move there. Kathryn would be 30 minutes closer to her grad school for next year and a straight highway 20 mile drive isn't a terrible commute.

...but still, gotta move :?

Long commutes are only a problem one way; at the end of the day, when you're eager to get home. ;)

Sports can be frustrating. Lost a pretty close soccer game 2-1 after leading with 0-1 for almost the whole game. I tried to block a cross into the box and it turned out to come even better after hitting my leg and just found the head of the striker -> 1-1. After that our coach got his second yellow card for complaining and with 2 mins left they shot the decisive goal. FUCK IT (N)

Anyone here has some knowledge about surround sound systems? This shit is driving me nuts... :x

I recently bought one of those and while it's working flawlessly with the all TV programs, it only works half the time with blu-ray discs...I have it connected to my blu-ray player via a fiber optic cable, and it's inconsistent as hell: at times it works fine all along (except for the sound skipping for 1 second here and there, not sure what's causing that), but recently I rented some blu-ray movies where only the previews or the studio introductions were in 5.1 sound, and then no sound at all during the movie, I have to use the regular TV speakers...
I know this may occur with older movies not designed with 5.1 sound, but with blu-rays?! And as a matter of fact, all my older DVDs seem to be work fine with surround sound, so I know it's not due to the system that I bought. I already ordered a new optical cable just in case, but not sure this will solve the issue.

The latest ones with no surround sound were Public Enemies and John Woo's Red Cliff. Is that a widely known issue with blu-ray releases or am I the only one experiencing this?

Re: The Letting Off Steam Thread

Mon Mar 29, 2010 1:41 pm

That's really weird. I doubt it's the optical cable given you're getting sound during the previews. I'm thinking it's more of a setting you're overlooking rather than anything else.

I'm guessing you try the audio options on the Blu-rays, you can't be that stupid so I wont bother suggesting that. (See what I did there?) But on a serious note, it could also be that your receiver can't decode the sound stream (which again is odd, but possible.)

If all else fails try avforums, those guys rock. I recently sold my receiver + speakers, one was due to rent issues but the other is because I've got my eyes on the Harman Kardon set.

Hope it works out, keep us updated.

Correct, I tried to change some blu-ray settings, and other settings from the 5.1 system, and still nothing. It's like it can properly decode previews and such (and any regular DVD for that matter), but for some reason the movie itself (at least maybe half of the blu-ray movies I've rented so far) does not play with any surround sound at all, which is really weird.
If all else fails try avforums

I'll check it out, thanks man.

Guillaume, if your blu-ray player is connected to an HDTV through HDMI, it might be trying to send the audio through the HDMI cable instead of the optical cable. Look for all the settings you can find like bitstream and pray you don't have a Panasonic receiver. It sounds like the dvd's that aren't working are trying to send out Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD and your receiver doesn't like it. Check the actual blu-ray disc menu and change the audio to Dolby Digital 5.1 and see if you can hear sound then.

That's good advice, and I think it might have something to do with that. I do have a HDMI cable from the HDTV to the blu-ray, and it may very well conflict with the surround sound system for blu-ray movies...I'll check that AVForums.com and try to change those settings, just received Black Dynamite thru netflix :mrt:
