a taste of his own medicine3 May, 2011PORTLAND (AP) –
Kevin Durant made a desperate bid to save the Seattle Stealth in the final three minutes of the game but his efforts failed. Portland took a 2-0 lead in their second round series and the Stealth suffered yet another injury blow with starting PF
David Lee suffering a twisted ankle.
Already missing backup C/F
Rasheed Wallace, Stealth Head Coach George Karl could not believe it when Lee was hurt after an awkward fall following a block attempt midway through the third quarter. Not too thrilled, the veteran coach stated, “We must have some kind of curse or something in this building. Two of my guys are down. It’s an uphill struggle from here.” Lee would later return to the game for a few moments but was largely ineffective as he hobbled on his hurt ankle.
Durant, who led all scorers with 30 points, was bitter about the defeat, “Portland got lucky. I don’t know what they did at halftime but they must have given their players something. We were the better team all night. I think I will blame the ball boys and the dancers. The court was a bit slippery too. It wasn’t our fault we lost and they didn’t win it either. They got lucky.”
Durant helped Seattle to a good start in the first quarter as he scored 13 of the team’s 25 points. The Stealth led by double digits for most of the first half as a result of that but a late Blazers charge in the half got the home team back in it.
Steve Nash was inspiring for his team and ended the half with back to back buckets that pulled Portland within six points of Seattle.
Ben Gordon’s three pointer to start the second half set the tone for the Blazers for the rest of the game.
Brandon Roy added a trey and a step back jumper to give Portland its first lead of the night at 51-50. The Stealth would regain their lead but Lee landed awkwardly on his ankle soon afterwards. Lee was forced to leave the game with Seattle on top 57-51 with 7:27 left. Portland took full advantage of his absence with a 14-2 run.
The Blazers continued with their dominance on both ends of the floor in the final period. They turned a 2 point ball game into what was seemingly headed towards a blow out. Portland’s led 81-68 with 5 minutes left in the game. Durant tried to take over but the Blazers hit too many three pointers down the stretch. Durant was able to help Seattle cut the Portland lead to 6 points with 1:20 left in the game. The superstar scored 8 points in a 2 minute span. Nash broke the hearts of the Seattle players as he put the game out of reach with a four point play late in the game.
Nash finished with 17 points and 5 assists.
Brandon Roy led the Blazers with 23 points and Gordon was also deadly with 15 points and 6 assists. The Blazers had six players in double figures. Seattle had five players in double figures. Durant’s 30 was backed up by
Raja Bell’s 13,
Andrew Bogut’s 12, and 11 apiece from David Lee and
Jason Kidd.
Despite the players claiming that the team have a deep rivalry, this series has not gotten nowhere near as ugly as the Clippers-Stealth series where Durant and
Amare Stoudemire ‘conveniently’ got in each other’s way and caused trouble. Roy had some insight into it, “We are professional enough to know that our basketball does the talking. I guess they know that they wouldn’t be able to beat us in a fight.”
Notes:
Jason Kidd recorded 0 assists in the second half… David Lee will have his ankle reassessed. The PF was hobbling around after the game and complained of the pain… The series goes back to Seattle where the Stealth has a dominant home record. They will need to win both Games 3 and 4 to stay in the series. The Stealth were trailing 0-2 after two games against the Blazers last year as well. Karl is hoping that the Stealth can repeat their performance and tie the series 2-2 after Game 4… After a 5-18 performance from Bell, Coach Karl hinted at a lineup change for Game 3…
