Arenas Buries Raptors at the Buzzer (96-93 Wizards)

December 26, 2009

DeShawn Stevenson shot the Wizards out of the game in the first place, but it was Stevenson who shot them back into it as he and Washington's big three came from behind to steal a game from the Raptors. It's not coming off as a surprise anymore that the Raptors would lose a lead in the final quarter and blow their chances of winning a game. Toronto allowed four of the Wizards' five starters to score at least 20 points or more, which in turn allowed the Wizards to bounce back from a double digit lead that the Raptors had throughout the first two quarters.

"It's always frustrating to let a team back into after you think you played a good part of the game really well," said Raptors centre Andrea Bargnani, who led the way for Toronto with a 21 point 14 rebound double-double. Bargnani's teammate Chuck Terrell echoed those statements, but also cited poor free throw shooting by the Raptors as a part of the problem. "We lost by three points and we went 13 for 21 from the line... I think we can all do the math," said an upset Terrell.

Toronto had managed to keep DeShawn Stevenson in check for most of the game, forcing him to shoot 6/16 from the field prior to the fourth quarter and held a 75-66 lead heaing into the fourth. However, the combined efforts of Caron Butler and Stevenson managed to quickly erase that deficit mid way through the quarter, as Butler racked up three quick steals which all led to points for the Wizards at the other end. Stevenson also hit 5 of his 7 shots down the stretch to give Washington their first lead of the game, 90-89 with 1:42 left. Chuck Terrell tried to stop the run with a dunk to give the Raptors the lead once again, but a Gilbert Arenas three pointer followed by a Bargnani jumper knotted the game up at 93 apiece with 12.3 seconds remaining. Arenas however was up to his old tricks in the waning seconds of the game as he elevated over Jose Calderon for a buzzer beating three pointer that netted the Wizards the victory.

Notes:
-The Raptors and Wizards were both 3-7 in their last 10 games prior to this game.
-Washington has now taken a series lea of 2-1 between Toronto.
-The Raptors will hope to even out the series for the season as they play Washington for the fourth and final time on December 31st.

Raptors WIthout Marion Struggle to Rebound (97-82 Sixers)

December 27, 2009

The downward spiral continues with Toronto as they are now 0-3 without their all-star forward Chris Bosh. Shawn Marion, Bosh's replacement for the injured forward was absent this game along with Nathan Jawai presumably due to a pending trade involving those players. The Toronto struggled mightily to keep up with the Sixers after the first half when most of the Raptor starters became fatigued due to their huge lack of depth with Marion unavailable to play.

Toronto's lack of big men let the Sixers big men walk all over them, as Philhadelphia pushed the game out of reach with their offensive rebounding. Overall Toronto had outrebounded Phihadelphia as neither team shot very well from the field, but second chance opportunities was what put the Sixers on top as they had 16 offensive rebounds. "It doesn't matter how many guys we have available to play, the bottom line is that we got killed on the glass offensively," Raptors coach Jay Triano had stated after the game with a hint of annoyance in his voice. "It was an ugly offensive game from both sides, but if you let the other team outhustle you and beat you at the little things, you're going to end up humiliating yourself."

In addition to their lackadaisical effort on the defensive glass, Toronto allowed the Sixers to capitalize on their dribble penetration. The Raptors handed out 34 freebies at the free throw line to the Sixers but Philhadelphia could not fully capitalize at the charity stripe as they only hit 25 of them. This was a sharp contrast to Toronto's usual defense, as they allow teams to shoot over 50% from the field and have committed the least amount of fouls this season.

Notes:
-The Raptors last met with the Sixers on November 2nd, beating them 103-96.
-Toronto is now on the outside looking in as they have slid to 9th place in the Eastern Conference after this loss.
-ESPN reports that a Shawn Marion deal is close to being announced around the time of the game, so Marion was ineligible to be in uniform.

It's Official - Marion Dealt to Portland
Webster, Heller and Frye Heading Up North

Image

Mike Ulmer - raptors.com
December 27, 2009

ImageImageImageImageImage

Although there have been rumblings all week that Shawn Marion could be dealt to a number of different teams, it was officially announced almost immediately following the Sixers game that Marion would be moved to the Trail Blazers along with sophomore big man Nathan Jawai to Portland in exchange for power forward Channing Frye, shooting guard Martell Webster and combo guard Antoine Heller.

Insider sources had initially reported that Marion was extremely close to being sent to Denver in exchange for J.R. Smith, but the deal ultimately fell apart when Colangelo also asked for Nuggets forward Linas Kleiza to be included in the deal.

"Our depth was the number one priority when it came to deciding where Marion should go," Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo said. "Our bench productively was not up to par this season, so we felt that we needed to acquire more than one player in an exchange for Marion that would mutually benefit both teams."

Marion was reportedly unhappy with his offensive role with the Raptors, as he curently averages 12.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists a night. "It really was unfortunate that we had to deal Marion, he's a player that I have a history with; I intitially drafted him in Phoenix and traded for him from Miami, but in the end it wasn't really working out," Colangelo explained.

The Raptors are near the bottom 5 in three point field goal percentage which was why Colangelo feels that Martell Webster is a key component in this trade. Webster however is a largely unproven commodity that also spent most of last season on the inactive list due to a foot injury. "I mean on paper if you look at his stats (9 games played, 3 points per game) he's a pretty unimpressive player," Colangelo said. "But if you look at his situation, he was in a major log jam at the small forward/shooting guard positions and was never given a chance to really show what he can do. He fits the bill for the shooter that we need right now and I wouldn't be surprised to see him perform well in a sixth man role for us."

Channing Frye has shown more stable production, as he is averaging 7 points a game and 3.3 rebounds per game as a back-up for Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge. "He's another player that doesn't get a lot of playing time to show what he can do,"said Colangelo in his assessment of Frye. "With Bosh out I think Frye can be a pretty solid substitute since they both play a somewhat similar game and at the same time prove that he can continue to build on that once promising rookie season that he had."

The X-factor of the trade could prove to be rookie Antoine Heller, a 6'6 point guard out of Santa Clara. Heller has recently come on strong for the Blazers as he has started the last 10 games for the Blazers and is averaging 5.3 points per game and 2.1 assists per game, but has averaged 12.3 points per game and 4.1 assists as a starter. Colangelo was adamant about including the 21 year old in the deal as he had previously expressed interest in acquiring Heller on draft night, although Toronto currently has a log jam at the guard positions. Heller however shows a ton of promise which explains why he was drafted as the 6th overall pick in the draft by Portland.

All three players should be ready by thursday when the Raptors visit the New York Knicks.

ImageImageImage
Martell Webster (left) will hope to break out with Toronto. Antoine Heller (middle) is an interesting young guard but faces an uphill battle in the Raptors depth chart. Channing Frye (right) should bring some relief at the power forward spot for the time being.

New Look Raptors Impress in First Game (101-78 Raptors)

December 29, 2009

It wasn't the newest players in a Raptors uniform that garnered the most attention throughout the game, but it was Jose Calderon and Chuck Terrell who stole the show. Terrell and Calderon combined for 44 of the Raptors 101 points as Toronto snapped their three game losing skid with a sense of urgency.

New Raptors Channing Frye and Martell Webster both had solid debuts, but what was most significant was Toronto's usually porous defense limited New York to only 37% shooting. "With Channing and Martell, we're now a very long and athletic team," said Rodney Carney, who finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds on 5 of 7 shooting. "A lot of the times before we couldn't run as much because we couldn't get any stops."

Never once was the momentum in New York's favour. With New York's weak offensive performance throughout all four quarters, they struggled to keep up with Toronto until Toronto's lead finally mounted high enough to blow them game wide open. The fourth quarter was mainly garbage time, but Frye and Webster remained in the game to help get a better feel for Toronto's playbook. "The offense is pretty simple," Webster said as he finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds off the bench despite going 0/4 from beyond the arc. "I think it's only a matter of time before I get my legs back into my shot and start knocking down shows again."

Notes:
-Chuck Terrell registered a career high 4 steals. He also registered his career high of 30 points against the Knicks on November 17 and loves to play against New York as he averages 23.3 points per game against them.
-Knicks' leading scorer Al Harrington is out for 7 more weeks with a bone spur injury.
-The series between the Knicks and the Raptors is now in the Raptors favour as they lead the series 2-1.

Wizards Claim Series Against Raptors (116-95 Washington)

December 31, 2009

The Raptors just can't seem to figure out the run and gun Washington Wizards as they were absolutely swamped by the Wizards' late game push. Both teams did what they did best, and that was try to out-score the opposing team, but it was the Wizards who managed to one-up Toronto in the turnovers department, forcing them to mis-handle the ball 18 times. The front court of Chuck Terrell, Andrea Bargnani and Channing Frye combined for 11 of those 18 turnovers. "We were able to keep up with them until they started getting in the passing lanes," Raptors forward Reggie Evans said. "That really threw off our rhythm."

Each quarter featured drastic swings of momentum where one team would score several uncontested baskets consecutively. This was mostly due to the amount of ball thefts that were made during the game, as Toronto racked up 9 steals while Washington had 11. Washington eventually took a 20 point lead thanks to an 18-5 run in the third quarter, but Toronto's free throw shooting helped them battle back to keep within striking distance.

After a Martell Webster three pointer, the Raptors only trailed 95-88 half way into the final quarter but Washington immediately heated up from down town. DeShawn Stevenson hit his only two three pointers of the game in combination with another three ball by Nick Young to put the Raptors instantly out of reach and sealed the season series at 3-1. "If you look at our three point shooting (8/26) and compare it with their three point shooting (9/21), you can tell that they hit their shots when it mattered and we didn't," explained Chuck Terrell. "We shot about the same three point percentage until the fourth quarter when we tried to answer back with our own three pointers but we missed almost every one of them."

Notes:
-Strangely enough, the Wizards and the Raptors seemed to have switched positions. With Caron Butler injured last month, the Wizards were below .500 and in 9th place while the Raptors were above .500 and sitting at 7th place. Now that Bosh is injured, the Raptors are below .500 and in 9th place while the Wizards are now 7th in the East and above .500.
-The Wizards are now on a mini four game win streak, two of the wins coming at the expense of Toronto.
-This is Patrick O'Bryant's first DNP-CD since November 17 against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Raptor of the Week
Image
Andrea Bargnani

With Bosh out, Bargnani has turned into a devasting double-double machine and the quiet go-to man for Toronto. While his shooting percentage has fallen a tad, it's still impressive considering that he shot 50%+ with Bosh in the lineup and it's only natural that his percentages dip because he has become more of a focal point for opposing defenses. His 9 attempts from beyond the arc this week also shows that he's trying to regain comfort form behind the arc, but he has continued to stay inconsistent from that area. For the most part, Bargnani is and was a solid force for Toronto, but he definitely can't do it alone as the Raptors continue to sink lower in the Eastern Conference without their all-star power forward.

Because most of you should know by now how much of a nerdgasm I get when writing scouting reports, I thought I would take the time you help you guys get a feel on how Antoine Heller plays, although I'm not sure exactly where he fits on the team right now with the major glut of guards at the moment.

Antoine Heller

Projected: Top 10

Height: 6'6
Weight: 201 lbs
Age: 21
School: Santa Clara

Pessimistic Comparison: Julius Hodge

Rebounding:ImageImageImage Passing: ImageImageImage

Dribbling:ImageImageImage Intangibles:ImageImageImage

Jumper:ImageImageImage Scoring: ImageImageImage

Defense: ImageImageImage Potential: ImageImageImage

Strengths: There's a lot to like about Antoine Heller because of the versatility that he's capable of bringing to the table. At 6'6 and 201 pounds, Heller has legitimate point guard skills to go with solid size and athleticism as a combo guard. You can get a glimpse of Heller's solid all-around play by the way he single-handedly carried Santa Clara to the tournament this year; it wasn't uncommon to see Heller grab a defensive board at one and race down the court and either set a teammate with a fancy pass or take it all the way to the rim himself on the fast break. More of a smooth athlete than an explosive leaper, Heller uses his athletcism very well on both ends of the court. On defense he plays the passing lanes with his length and quickness while on offense combines his athleticism with his ball handling for some really entertaining herky jerky slashing moves. Although he's not a stellar three point shooter, Heller has improved remarkably throughout the season as he slowly gained comfort from shooting spot up jumpers from NBA three point range. Heller is most devasting at 20 feet and in though, as he can attack an opposing defense in a variety of smooth and seemingly effortless moves to the basket. Whether it's posting-up a smaller man, nailing a pull-up jumper or throwing up a floater, Heller can do it all in a smooth fashion. People also consider Heller to be a potential point guard in the NBA as he is also a very adept passer and is almost selfish to a fault at times in order to help get his teammates going. Unfortunately Heller's assist totals would have looked a hell of a lot nicer if he had competent teammates to back him up.
Weaknesses: It's hard to pinpoint one exact weakness in Heller's game because of how well-rounded of a player he is, but there are a lot of question marks surrounding him. The biggest unknown heading into the draft is the health of his knee. Heller has had a history of a nagging knee problem which he operated on a few years ago that made him miss nearly his entire freshman year. While he looked healthy this year, there's no question that his stock has gone from a top 5 pick to just a lottery pick because of that. Because Heller is relied on so much by his team, there are times where he is simply tries to do too much for his team. You can tell that Heller is uncomfortable sometimes being the go-to guy for the team because of how unselfish he is and how content he seems to be as a role player for his team. This makes people question if Heller's ceiling actually is that high and whether or not he's simply a byproduct of being a decent player on a really awful team. There's also Heller's perimeter game which might be suspect for NBA standards. While he's not exactly a poor shooter by any means, he leaves a lot to be desired in terms of shooting range, especially if he's to be a a guard at the next level.
Jim Kelly's (Raptors' Sr. Director of Player Personnel) Take: "I like his body, he's got a pretty solid frame and that he could either fill out to become more of a full time shooting guard or he can keep his body the way he is and retain his speed and quickness and play both the 1 and the 2. I think he's versatile enough of a player to come in right away and adapt to whatever the team needs him to be, whether it's an energetic scorer, a playmaker or even just a lock-down defender. The kid has a bright future, but it's more up to what the team wants out of him that will determine how effective of a player he will be."

Looks like the trade gave you an initial boost with that blowout over New York but you're still missing Bosh's presence, which is quite understandable. It's an interesting deal, though I would've gone for someone more high profile since as I said it's not often that you've got someone with as high an overall rating as Marion be so readily expendable. Seems like you certainly made the right choice with Terrell though.

dascoot - I was pretty adamant on acquiring J.R. myself, but I guess Denver likes Kleiza too much to let go of him. I really wanted to acquire another big in my trade, but I couldn't really see any quality bigs that play on Denver aside from Nene and K-Mart (both who I think would have been too much if I were to trade for them AND Smith).

hova- - Yeah, I don't know how exactly to play defense in this game (forgot after those 4 years and moving on with the other games in the series I guess) so my defense is pretty awful when I'm controlling the team.

The X - Oh man, I guess I totally confused your dynasty with someone elses'. Either way, bonus points for having Air France on that team.

newc - It honestly was probably my number one choice, but I just couldn't seem to make any of the three trades that I initially wrote about to work... I guess it's alright considering in reality Colangelo is pretty up-tight with his trades, so having a trade come completely from nowhere is kind of his style.

Martti. - In my dynasty Ray Allen is like the leading scorer on the Celtics, I don't think that trading him for Marion would necessarily be a move that Boston would consider at this time. It was enticing to get a really highly rated player, but in the end it would just create more logjams for the players that I acutally would want to play (Terrell, Carney, etc.)

MikeMan™ - I don't like any of those players. I'm a fairly picky person when it comes to trading for players because I usually lose interest extremely quickly in a dynasty if the players that are playing on my team are not players that I actually like... So sorry, no dice for any of them I'm afraid.

thierryhenry50 - They definitely would, but Monta is too undersized to be utilized effectively in my dynasty and Hamilton is getting up there in terms of age. I usually prefer to build my team around younger and more athletic players.

Sit - It's a Raptor fan thing man.... Impossible to even touch those players for me. Although I'm not a Carter/McGrady hater like most Raptor fans, I just can't see the logic behind Colangelo bringing them back. That and I can't pull a creative story out of my ass to make it work like you can do.

Skillmatic - In case you haven't noticed I've been forcing the issue with Terrell lately with Bosh out, which has kind of hurt his field goal percentages... Tends to happen a lot when I really want a player to succeed. I am happy that you enjoy the dynasty though.

Andrew - A blockbuster would've been nice to generate some buzz, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Statisically, it wouldn't really make sense trading Marion for an all-star considering he averages only 12 points a game and 5 boards a game and has been pouty for most of the season. Realistically it just wouldn't add up to get a star in return for someone who's doing that badly (just like how it usually is with most star players in the NBA).

BaronDavis1 - lol, a lot of fans of the Smith trade and I agree that I am one myself. It's unfortunate that it couldn't be worked out, I had a blast using him in my original '05 Raps dynasty.

XxCavaliers and RDV23
- He's rated like 75 or something, but I want to try to deviate a little bit from the Raptors actual roster right now. To be honest I'm not a fan of the ridiculous amount of Euro players on the Raptors' roster right now, but I am glad that the Raptors get an opportunity to be one o fthe better teams in the East. Honestly, it was just personal bias holding me back from concocting something with Orlando.

john26 - His contract is way too huge for me to take in, I'd have to deal multiple players to Milwaukee to make it work. My depth is pretty strained as it is right now, so as much I like Redd I couldn't find a method of dealing for him.

Clutch - Clutch you're the winner of this one I guess. I opted for a more low key signing with smaller contracts and younger talent. It might be a little off from what I originally planned but I'm somewhat satisfied with the end result.

I'd love to hear your guys opinion on the trade (good or bad, it doesn't really phase me to be honest).

Wow, lord knows how my dynasty got so many replies... This is new for me.

True, that's understandable and I admire that you were able to resist the temptation. I don't think I'd be able to, but that might have something to do with trying to make trades with the 08/09 Bulls. ;)

I liked the trade. Webster still has potential although in real life, it has gotten to the point where he needs to step it up or he is a bust. Fyre is a servicable big man off the bench. The key could be the rookie Heller. If he can play like the scouting report says he does, he looks like a good point guard that has size and skill (next Magic? )

I still like Shawn Marion and thinks that in a fast break system he can be an all-star, but still a good trade overall.

Tough losses. The Philly score has a typo. It says your raptors won. ;)
I love this trade. I am sure you could have gotten way more just because of Marion's odd rating in the game but that simply would not have been realistic. Getting Martell Webster and Antoine Heller and Channing Frye makes this move really a good looking move dumping salaries (I guess at least one expiring contract) or just building up a future squad.

Heller seems an interesting guy. He has everything to dominate in the NBA but needs to do two or three more steps I guess. Nice scouting report. Keep up the good writing.

Terrell has plenty of holes in his game; namely shot selection, but despite this he continues to show that he is the best scorer in a fairly average draft class. Now as a full-time starter and with Marion gone, Terrell is fully capable of being the third option behind Bosh and Bargnani (or Calderon, depending on who you ask).

2. Simba Vaught (Oklahoma City) - 13.7 ppg 4.6 rpg 3.6 apg 1.0 spg 0.5 bpg 37% FG 31% 3PT 80% FT
The UCLA guard drafted 18th overall has exploded out of nowhere after a quiet opening month to the season. The Thunder's search for a two guard might be over as Vaught has shown fantastic upside playing alongside Durant, as each of their 6'9 frames form one of the most freakishly lanky tandems in the league.

3. Priest Askins (Memphis) - 13.1 ppg 10.7 rpg 2.5 apg 1.07 spg 1.5 bpg 40% FG 29% 3PT 67% FT
Askins has slipped off a bit this month, as his shooting percentages have gone down and has become a tad too gung-ho from beyond the arc for a big man (is he partially to blame for Memphis ranking last in 3 point percentage?). The no. 1 pick has remained a double-double machine and a solid two way player which netted him rookie of the month honours for the second month in a row.

4. Fredrik Ratchuk (Sacramento) - 12 ppg 3 rpg 4.5 apg 1.13 spg 0.19 bpg 42% FG 35% 3PT 79% FT
Minor injuries have hampered Ratchuk's effectiveness and forced him to sit out a couple of games or make him come off the bench as a back-up. Expect Ratchuk to climb back into the top 3 this month if he can stay healthy and reclaim his starting spot.

5. Demian Reirden (New York) - 7 ppg 4 rpg 1.5 apg 0.36 spg 0.64 bpg 43% FG 25% 3PT 72% FT
You can't help but feel sorry for the guy the way that he gets booed off the court by Knicks fans at times due to being selected as the no. 2 pick ahead of the likes of Terrell and Ratchuk. Despite the rough treatment by his home crowd, Reirden has stepped it up in the absence of starting power forward and leading scorer Al Harrington.

6. Dean Friedman (Charlotte) - 11 ppg 3.6 rpg 3.5 apg 1.64 spg 0.5 bpg 35% FG 22% 3 PT 72% FT
Teams are starting to pick up on the fact that Friedman can't shoot and his poor shooting percentages are a definite indicator of that. Despite the poor shooting, he has remained a versatile player that can fill up the stat sheet.

7. Adam Otter (Minnesota) - 7.5 ppg 1.9 rpg 1.6 apg 0.72 spg 0.14 bpg 42% FG 25% 3PT 81% FT
With Mike Miller rumours being churned out by the dozen every day, Adam Otter has become the T-Wolves' two guard of the future. Otter's scoring ability was excessively compared with Terrell's before the draft, but has only recently started coming to his own.

Taking A Time-Out With Terrell
Ulmer Gets to Sit Down to Chat with the Rookie of the Month

Image

Mike Ulmer - raptors.com
January 1, 2009

Raptors.com's Mike Ulmer had a chance to sit down and catch-up with the Raptors'starting rookie small forward Chuck Terrell on New Years Day. The ex-USC Trojan has won his second consecutive Rookie of the Month award since being selected third overall in the 2009 NBA Draft and has thus far proven to be one of the favourites for Rookie of the Year. The well-spoken 19 year old gave Raptors.com his take on his first two months in the NBA.

Image
Terrell's silky smooth mid-range j has vaulted him into the forefront of ROY contention.

Ulmer:Hey there Chuck, let's start off by talking about the great rookie season that you're having so far. Back to back Rookie of the Month awards, owning the highest points per game and steals per game averages so far in to the season, a lot of guys are pegging you already as the rookie of the year candidate. What are your thoughts on that?

Image
Terrell: It's a great feeling. You know, I put a lot of work into my game and this is just an example of it paying it off. There are a lot of really good rookies in this draft, like Priest Askins, Fredrik Ratchuk and Dean Friedman who aren't too far behind either.

Ulmer: Simba Vaught is another guy that recently burst out of nowhere too.

Image
Terrell: Yeah, I hear that guy's like a 6'9 two guard that plays like Tracy McGrady or something. That's just going to be insane for the Thunder in the near future.

Ulmer: Alright let's change gears for a bit and talk about the Portland Trade. What was your initial reaction to the Shawn Marion trade that was made near the end of this month?

Image
Terrell: To be honest I wasn't too surprised by it, but I do think that the media portrayed Shawn too much as this bad guy with a big ego. He really was a fun guy to be around and I don't think that anything that the media said about him was 100% true.

Ulmer: Most people believe that it was you, of all people, who played so well off the bench that made Marion expendable.

Image
Terrell: Well Shawn and I weren't the best of friends, but we did talk to each other a lot. He would always be there to help me out with plays and stuff and gave me pointers on playing at the NBA level. As for me being the reason as to why he left, I think that the team just wanted to go in a different direction and Marion wanted to go in another.

Ulmer: Well now with Shawn traded for Frye, Webster and Heller, what do you think of the trade itself and what's your new role now that you're the starting small forward for the team?

Image
Terrell:
I think the trade made us deeper. We had trouble closing out games because the starters would always have to carry the offensive load too much and our bench just couldn't keep up. We're more well balanced now with those three guys, we just need to get used to playing with each other. As for myself, nothing's really changed. Coach Triano wants me to play the way I've been playing off the bench, but now he wants it over an extended period of time. It'll be tough, especially with Bosh out, but I can do it.

Ulmer: The Raptors were at one point 5th in the East and are now 14-17 and 9th place in the East. You guys look like you needed to shake things up. Can you tell us why that is the case?

Image
Terrell: Well personally I think we had a pretty good team with Marion on board. Things just never fell into place at the right time. First Jose was struggling, then the Marion drama happened, then the Bosh injury hit us... A lot of things sort of flew at me in my first two months but I'm glad that it happened because stuff like this happens all the time in the NBA and I needed to experience them. Like I said earlier, we've got some really cool locker room guys in Frye, Webster and Heller, all we need now is some time to gel and I guarantee that we will make the playoffs.

Ulmer: A bold statement there. Speaking of chemistry, you seem to have a history with fellow rookie Antoine Heller as well...

Image
Terrell: Yeah me and Heller both met at the NCAA tournament in the first round. We both dropped 35 for our each of our teams... But we blew out his team and moved on to the next round, of course (laughs).

Ulmer: But it must be nice having a first year player such as yourself since you were the only rook on the squad before the trade.

Image
Terrell: Oh definitely. As a rookie, I'm forced to wear a pink Dora the Explorer bag around me at all times off the court, so it'll be nice to have someone share the feeling of that embarassment. Joking aside, me and Heller are learning a lot from each other as rookies. If he can get some playing time I think me he can wow some people with the stuff that he can do.
Note: Carrying around the Dora the Explorer bag is what the Raptors have actually done to all of their rookies since around 2005.

Ulmer: Being a rookie and all, some people might not know your game as well as you do. Describe your game to us and who dp you pattern it after?

Image
Terrell: I'm a smooth player. I can do it all on the offensive end and if you try to defend me too hard I'm just as comfortable passing the ball off. I'm an underrated passer and I'm just a player who knows how to use his strength and silky smooth jumper to his advantage. I've been compared to Carmelo Anthony a lot in college, and that's someone who I try to pattern my game after. We both are scoring small forwards who have pretty good size.

Ulmer: People say that your biggest weakness is your defense. What do you have to say about that?

Image
Terrell: I know I'm not the best defensive player in the world, but I'm getting better at it. I was mostly a 4 in college and only started playing the 3 midway through the season so it's almost like a shock seeing how quick the guys in the NBA are. I think I have what it takes to be a good two way player down the road, I just need time.

Ulmer: Alright Chuck we need to wrap this up. It was a pleasure meeting you and any last thoughts?

Image
Terrell:It was a pleasure meeting you too Mike. First of all I'd like to thank all of the Raptors fans for their continued support of myself and the team and let's hope that we can turn things around this new year. Let's go Raptors!

BaronDavis1 - Yeah the trade wasn't exactly planned to make major waves in the NBA. I mean you can only get so much for a 12 and 5 player.

Andrew - I'm too nit picky with the players that I trade for and they're usually very mediocre players... So I don't really suffer from that dilemma. :P

MikeMan™ - Well I'm not too worried about having a "real" center. I've honestly viewed Frye as a C/PF because of his lack of quickness and Bargnani has grown into a fairly solid matchup nightmare at that position. Let's also not forget that O'Bryant is pretty useful at times being a 7 footer as well.

john26 - I wouldn't think it would be too big of a steal. Frye and Webster aren't projected to do too many big things in the near future so I would think that most people would've viewed the trade as more of a negative on my part.

balozunite - Yeah I'm really hoping that a Terrell/Heller rookie duo will help vault me into the playoffs, but he'd need to outplay one of my guards (Carney or Crittenton) first.

Sit - Terrell is definitely my go-to scorer at the moment with Bargnani being more of the quieter half of the duo who gets his points within the flow of the game. It's a nice little contrast that I'm hoping to play around with in the future even with Bosh back in the lineup.

Clutch - Yeah Webster was picked up for his shooting but I can't seem to get his release down for some reason. I guess it's just a matter of practice before he starts knocking them down. At 6'8 there aren't many two guards out there who can defend him properly out on the perimeter and Live '05 really likes to use height as an advantage when it comes to shooting threes.

Martti. - Yep, that was the whole point. I don't really want another all-star on the team because I've got plenty of positions solidified for the future (C, PF, SF, PG) so I don't really see a point in adding a redundant player who will realistically just end up unhappy with his playing time.

thierryhenry50 - I'll let you know when I'll be making my next trade so you can approve of it commissioner thierry! :P

hova- - Thanks for the compliment/helping me fix the typo.

Realism at it's finest (Y)
and Terrell played 4 in College ? I didn't know that , is that why he has low defensive capabilities ?

Very nice recap and cool interview. Seems to be a quite positive good guy. The battle for the 8th seed is really tough. You definitely need to put up some Ws. Looking forward to seeing Heller play.

Re: Its_asdf's Raptors Dynasty - TerrellChat(Revised)+Dec.Recap

Postby Its_asdf on Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:27 pm

Well I decided to edit the chat transcript with a few extra bits of dialogue because I was somewhat unhappy with the finished product because I missed a point or two. I admit that I rushed the chat because I had to wake up early for work.

MikeMan™ - Thanks for the compliments MikeMan, realism is something I'd like to lean towards in my dynasties. I tend to get bored pretty quickly if I load my team up with superstars and blow every team out. That's why I usually prefer to play teams that are rebuilding or have a young core of talented players and build on that.

And yeah, it's not uncommon to see SFs like Glenn Robinson or Carmelo Anthony (players who I think resemble Terrell the most in terms of their play style) play the four in college. 6'7/6'8 players are considered pretty big in the NCAA.

john26 - Yeah, being a Raptors fan you would probably know about that. DeRozan is probably going to have to go through that this year as well. :)

hova- - I know, those two losses to Washington were a lot bigger than I originally thought they were and really made it an uphill battle for this month. I'd have to string together some pretty solid win streaks to get past Atlanta.

I'd also want to play Heller more but unfortunately I'm loaded at both guard spots. Hopefully I can see what works by February and unload a point guard or shooting guard closer to the deadline to make room for him.

Though you didn't bring VC back lol, I like the trade you managed to pull off. It definitely improves your bench, and you get rid of Marion's huge contract. I remember the Raps were originally targetting Webster on draft night in '05, and he still has a lot of potential to make an impact in the NBA. But you should probably have him back up Terrell, since your team is loaded at the 2. The Heller guy looks really promising, and Frye gives you a really solid big man rotation. Your roster is looking really sharp right now, great job!

Also loving the realism in the interview with Terrell. I felt like I was actually reading an interview with an actual Raptors rookie... which leads to say, nice touch with the backpack bit. ;)

top notch articles and all systems go for your Raps (Y)

now, not to sound ominous and foreboding, but for some strange, intangible reason i'm still feeling Priest is gonna give Chuck a run for his money for RotY honors even w/whiny Marion out of the way...
