The argument is not evolution vs. God's existence. You can have both, and you can also have neither.

Most athiests are athiests because they use logic. Accepting the theory of evolution as fact is logical.

This does not mean that all athiests accept the theory of evolution. It does not mean that everyone who accepts the theory of evolution is athiest.

I believe 100% that the theory of evolution is correct. It is not silly or far-fetched. There are numerous facts to support it, and very little (if any) facts against it. I also believe 100% that "god" (I refuse to capitalize that word) is bullshit. It was created because we had absolutely no way to explain the world around us, and had not yet developed the technology or intellect to figure it out. We still hardly know anything, but we certainly know enough to not have to believe in a god/creator. There are no *facts* to support the theory of god.

That said, I see nothing wrong with people devoting their lives to the ideals of Christianity. Be nice to people, do good things, be honest, don't fuck your neighbor behind your wife's back. I just don't understand why anyone would view it as anything more than a metaphor for "hope" anymore, with all the proof of an amazing scientific universe all around us. Jesus is a metaphor for hope. But not the holy kind. Just hope for a good life and the best, through good honest actions.

Disclaimer: If you do believe in God, good for you. I'm not saying I'm right. That's just how I feel. I'd be a hypocrite if I said I was right.

Did that. Old Testament God was a jealous and vengeful one. New Testament God was pretty much invisible. Jesus was a great moral teacher and someone we can all look up to. Believing that the events in the Bible really did happen is irrelevant to your entry into heaven. If you believe everything in the Bible is true and go to weekly confessions while you sodomize little boys isn't going to make you better than a peaceful atheist.

Even if some random Christian was able to prove that a God-like figure existed it would still solve nothing as there are so many other religions with varying beliefs on God itself. I used to get into this stuff when I was like 16, now I just don't care. I'm alive now, eventually I'll die (not if I have anything to do with it btw) and then I'll find out what happens next. Maybe nothing, maybe something. What I do know is that I'll be happy in the knowledge that I didn't devote my life to living by the rules of a potentially ficticious character who's teachings were handed down to a guy, who handed them down to other guys, who handed them down to more guys who wrote about it who then had their writings edited and changed before a bunch of other guys voted on the matter and turned it into the bible. I'll also rest easily knowing I didn't spend all of my time arguing about it.

talking to my fiance during lunch (yes, thanks assholes for taking up my lunch convo material) we both settled on the idea that religion is more of a psychological coping mechanism having to do with death. Think about what the worst thing that could happen to people in the BC years, death. What better way to feel about death than to think that they are in heaven or paying for all the things they did wrong to you in hell. It wraps up all feelings towards a person whether it be revenge/negative feelings or love/positive feelings.

How can one person create the Earth? How can that one person do it in 6 days? Why did that person suddenly decide to create humans? Why did he create humans the way we are? If he created us in his image, why have humans changed so much physically since they first emerged?
