Kevin Durant Did Not Seem To Be Bothered By His Right Ankle

SEATTLE (AP) – Kevin Durant may have a twisted ankle but the star refuses to let his teammates down. Durant scored a team high 22 points and added 7 rebounds to lead his team to an 18 point victory over the visiting LA Lakers. Durant was so good that he and captain Jason Kidd were able to sit out the whole second half; Kidd had 6 points and 8 assists.

The Stealth had seven players scoring in double figures. Adam Morrison scored 17 from off the bench, Jeff Green added 15, and Trevor Ariza chipped in 13. Sebastian Telfair , Reshawn Tyson, and David Lee also got on the score sheet for Seattle.

Seattle came out aggressively in the first quarter but only hit their stride entering the second. They built a 40-25 lead during the second quarter before Derek Fisher hit back to back threes, Luke Walton had an open jumper, and Kobe Bryant added a trey of his own. That was able to help the Lakers push their score up 38-47.

That was when Ariza came onto the court for his first action in the game and he was an instant spark for Seattle; initiating a 27-4 run with his hustle that would effectively seal the win for the Stealth. “Trevor did a great job tonight,” Coach George Karl said, “He came on and did all the little things and it payed.”

If it was any consolation for the Lakers, they were able to win the third quarter but any momentum gained by the team was lost almost straight away at the start of the final quarter with Ariza opening the scoring with a triple. He then went on to have three dunks in the ensuing two minutes to keep the Stealth on top of business.

“Trevor was devastating,” veteran big man Brad Miller stated; he finished with 8 rebounds.

Coach Phil Jackson blasted his team, especially for what he called a ‘lack of effort’ in the second quarter. “They let Jamaal Magloire go coast to coast on them twice in that quarter. That guy is 6-11 and they let him go from one end of the court to the other, and dunk. I want to ask my guys, how could you be beaten down the court by him?”

Jackson was also critical of his star guard Kobe Bryant, “I sensed in that last quarter, he just did not try to play the team game. We needed him to make a statement and say that we weren’t going to go away from our game plan even if we were down by big numbers. I hope he realizes that he can’t win games on his own in the playoffs.”

Bryant finished the game with 49 points; 24 of them coming in the last quarter. He defended himself from his coach’s comments, “I think Phil must have been watching another game. No one else was stepping up and as the leader of this team, I had to try and lift us. What else do I do?”

Andrew Bynum was the Lakers’ next best with 18 points and 14 rebounds; 14 of his points came in the third quarter. Pau Gasol had another quiet game, finishing with just 12 points.

Stealth coach George Karl was happy about winning but not about the win. After the game, he said that if the Stealth wanted to go far, they had to take better care of the ball. The Stealth committed 15 turnovers, compared to the Lakers’ 3. “We were lucky the Lakers weren’t taking good shots,” Karl stated, “If they were hitting their shots, then we would have been in trouble.”

Notes: The Lakers hoisted 35 three balls, sinking just 5 of them… Durant said that his twisted ankle was getting better and that he should be at 100% for the next game… Bonzi Wells followed up a solid performance in Game 1 with just 2 points in this one… The Lakers host Game 3 at the Staples Centre in two days…

Bryant Eager For Game Three

April 20, 2010

LOS ANGELES (AP) – After losing Games One and Two by margins of 21 and 18, no one could blame Kobe Bryant for being excited about returning home to LA. After big performances have Bryant sitting on a scoring average of 40.5 ppg in this first round series, the former MVP and three-time champion is not satisfied.

“We should be at least more competitive out there,” he says, “Props to Seattle for coming at us but personally, I am disappointed in my team mates. We’re not playing hard enough.” Bryant’s comments come after his coach Phil Jackson called him out for ‘not involving his team mates and trying to win by himself’. Bryant was again defending himself today, “Phil doesn’t understand sometimes.”

Bryant was confident that the Lakers could turn the series around and win both Games Three and Four at home. “We’re still in this, we’re only 0-2 down but it can easily be 2-2 when we come back here (Seattle) in a few days,” Bryant said.

Watson Leads Nuggets To Jazz Rout

DENVER (AP) – Andrew Watson didn’t take long to get going as he drilled the Jazz with 31 points on 12 for 18 shooting from the field. He also added 6 assists as teammate JR Smith chipped in 28 from off the bench and Carmelo Anthony had 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Chauncey Billups made up for a subpar offensive performance by facilitating to his teammates, racking up 13 assists in the Nuggets’ 122-94 win over the seventh seeded Utah Jazz. Deron Williams tried his best to keep his team in the game but he had no help from his teammates. Williams finished with 31 points and 9 assists. The next highest Jazz scorer was Andrei Kirilenko on 10.

Pistons Destroy Wizards

DETROIT (AP) – The Pistons continue to roll as they were the ones who weaved magic against the Wizards. Allen Iverson was unstoppable as he dropped 34 on Washington. Rip Hamilton added 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Rasheed Wallace added 18 points and 9 rebounds, and Luther Head scored 19 from off the pine.

Gilbert Arenas and Deshawn Stevenson scored 17 apiece, Caron Butler added 14, with Nick Young and Antawn Jamison each having 13. Rookie Klemen Pirc was effective with 6 points and 5 assist in only 22 minutes.

After the 135-104 win, Iverson told media that this was the year the Pistons would win the title, “We’re chilling right now. No one will be able to stop Detroit.”

Indiana Evens Series At Atlanta

April 20, 2010

ATLANTA (AP) – Josh Smith made up for a quiet Game One with 19 points on 8 for 12 shooting. Joe Johnson had 19 while Al Horford was solid with 9 points and 13 rebounds. Unfortunately, Atlanta was unable to defend their home court and dropped Game Two to the Indiana Pacers 98-89.

Danny Granger rained down six three pointers and finished with 26 points. TJ Ford had 21 poitns, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals while Jamaal Tinsley was great off the bench; finishing with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Tinsley was also the spark for the team as he hit all three of his long range shots in the final quarter, including one with 2:42 that helped Indiana gain their first lead of the night at 87-86. Granger hit back to back threes after that to help extend the Pacers’ lead to 93-88 with 1:32 remaining in the game. A Brandon Rush dunk and Roy Hibbert hook shot would seal the win for Indiana.

The Pacers will host Game Three against the Hawks.

Kobe Bryant, Luke Walton Celebrate

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The LA Lakers made a big statement after losing by large amounts in Games One and Two with a blow-out win of their own in Game Three of their first round series against the Seattle Stealth. The Lakers took advantage of Seattle’s poor start to the game and won by a massive 41 point margin.

Kobe Bryant followed up a 49 point performance in Game 2 with 48 in Game 3. Rodney Stuckey made a strong bid to Coach Phil Jackson to start him at PG in the next game with 22 points and 6 assist from off the bench. Pau Gasol had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists while starting PG Derek Fisher scored 10.

George Karl predicted that Seattle would lose if they did not protect the ball. He was scathing of his players after the game. “They kept turning the ball over, they kept taking wild shots, they kept doing stupid things with the basketball,” he said in the post-game press conference, “What do you guys want me to say? There’s nothing to say really.”

Kevin Durant led his team with 33 but was 12 for 27 from the field. Jason Kidd had 14 assists but was 1 for 10 from the field. Adam Morrison chipped in 22 from off the bench, most of his points coming in garbage time though.

“I don’t know what to say,” Karl said, “My guys were just too complacent tonight. I apologize to everyone watching at home, it was a pitiful performance.”

Bryant came out strong in order to make a big statement after being called out by his Coach Phil Jackson after Game 2. The former MVP scored 21 in the first quarter before starting to draw two-man coverage in the second quarter. When he was double teamed, Bryant started hitting the open man. “I was a bit cut about Phil’s comments,” Bryant explained, “But he’s the coach. I just do what he tells me to do.”

When questioned if his coach allowed him to take charge early in the game, he replied, “Absolutely. Phil gave me the green light.” Durant, the leading scorer during the regular season, was full of praise for Bryant, “Tonight, I could tell he was in a scoring mood. He’s amazing like that. He just so focused.”

Durant was also visibly disappointed, “We came out and tried to do too much. We shot too many threes and we tried to slow the game down. I think we need to come out in the next game and play our kind of game.”

“We were a joke out there tonight,” Durant admitted before leaving for the team shuttle back to the hotel.

Pistons Continue To Cruise

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Detroit Pistons are currently just one game away from easily reaching the second round of the 2010 playoffs. In the first three games of their series against the Washington Wizards, the Pistons have not even broken a sweat against their eighth seeded opponents.

Even on an off-night from Rip Hamilton, the Pistons were able to come away as 110-93 victors. Washington, led by Gilbert Arenas’ 31 points, had simply been outmatched by the squad who appear to be clear cut title favourites. “I can tell you right now,” Caron Butler, who finished with 14 points, said, “Detroit are one heck of a team. We thought they were all about defence but they killed us on attack these last few games. Actually, they’ve beaten us at both ends. Good luck to anyone who wants to stop them.”

Hamilton only scored 15 points but Allen Iverson picked up the slack with 22 points and 8 assists and Luther Head had another scorching shooting night from off the bench – picking up 21. Rasheed Wallace also finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Washington rookie Klemen Pirc had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists in 21 minutes of court time.

Orlando Win Close Game At Home 106-104

April 22, 2010

ORLANDO (AP) – The Magic fought hard to win Game Three on their home court, setting them up for a crucial tie against the Miami Heat in Game Four. “If we win (Game Four), then it’s all tied up and it’s best out of three,” Dwight Howard exclaimed.

Hedo Turkoglu top scored for the Magic with 29 points, Rasheed Lewis added 21, and Courtney Lee had 18. Howard finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Magic were in full control after a magnificent display of shooting in the first half. Lewis finished with four three point shots while Lee had five of his own.

The Heat came back gallantly in the second half, on the back of some amazing plays from Dwyane Wade. Wade did score 40 points but also had 9 assists and 4 steals. “D-Wade nearly willed us to victory tonight,” teammate Michael Beasley stated. Mario Chalmers contributed 13 points and 12 assists in his first game back from injury.

Wade battled hard to get the Heat back in the contest but ultimately ran out of time in the end. With his team trailing by just 4 points with 2:12 remaining, Wade missed all three of his final shots of the game. The Magic didn’t fair much better and both teams produced an anticlimactic end to the game. Beasley tipped in Wade’s missed jumper with 3.4 seconds left to get Miami within 2 points but the Heat did not foul quick enough to have a chance to tie or win the game.

Minnesota Shocks New Orleans

MINNESOTA (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves took advantage of a sick Chris Paul and won Game Three of their series 103-98. Paul was not himself as he dished out 12 assists but only had 13 points on 1 for 8 shooting. David West tried his best and ended the game with 28 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Mike Bibby was the star for Minnesota as he scored 25 points, and added 9 assists and 5 steals. The veteran PG reminded everyone of himself from his Sacramento Kings days with his performance. Rashad McCants scored 15 points from off the bench and Al Jefferson scored 13.

Utah Win One At Home

April 22, 2010

UTAH (AP) – Chauncey Billups was blocked by Andrei Kirilenko at the buzzer and the Jazz came away with a 116-114 win against the second seeded Denver Nuggets. Deron Williams had 26 points and 14 assists and was able supported by Kirilenko’s 23 points and Mehmet Okur’s 17.

Andrew Watson and Carmelo Anthony had 28 points apiece and Chauncey Billups finished with 15 points and 10 assists. Watson was deadly from beyond the arc, sinking five three pointers.

The game was a physical affair with plenty of technical fouls handed out to the players. JR Smith and Ronny Brewer both got entangled under the hoop and were assessed technicals. Carmelo Anthony was pushing the boundaries after going after rookie Donnell Lawrence. Anthony was restrained by Billups and Watson, then given a technical.

Joe Johnson Saves The Hawks

INDIANA (AP) – The Hawks avenged their Game Two home loss to the Pacers by winning 100-95 in Game Three at Indiana. Danny Granger did his best to keep the home side on top with 39 points and 8 rebounds. TJ Ford was the Pacers’ next best player, finishing with a double double of 14 points and 10 assists.

Joe Johnson had 31 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Josh Smith made his impact felt from all over the floor as he compiled 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. The Pacers had led all game before Joe Johnson sparked a 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter. That saw the Hawks to take their first lead of the game with 1:21 left in the game at 96-95. Atlanta never looked back and took a 2-1 series lead.

Reshawn Tyson Razzled and Dazzled

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Seattle Stealth were humiliated in front of national television audiences in Game 3. They were then chastised by many who claimed that they did not have what it took to come back from a debilitating 41 point loss. George Karl decided it was time for a change in tactics.

Karl shifted rookie Reshawn Tyson into the starting lineup, dropping Jeff Green who has struggled to keep up with Kobe Bryant all series. In addition to that, Karl activated Rocky Akonnor for Game 4 because of his big men’s inability to keep Lakers duo Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol off the glass and out of the paint.

The moves paid dividends with the Lakers falling 109-73 at home to their younger rivals. Tyson did not slow down Bryant, who finished with 39 points. However, Akonnor played tough and grabbed 8 rebounds while keeping Both Bynum and Gasol to 6 points apiece. Coach Karl was impressed with Akonnor’s playoff debut, “Rocky was great. His size and strength was an asset to us. You could tell that he really bothered Pau and Bynum out there tonight.”

Bryant was mainly ineffective for the Lakers as he picked up three quick fouls in the first few minutes of the game. After his tempers boiled in the second quarter, he pick up a fourth foul in the second quarter. The Lakers did the best they could to keep up with their opponents in the half but Seattle blitzed them in the third period.

“That third quarter went by so quick, you just did not notice,” Bryant said, “I was on the bench and it was a blur.” Bryant came out to score most of his team’s points in the final quarter, sparking more criticism form his coach Phil Jackson. Jackson commented, “I know we were down by a big margin but Kobe jacking up shots is not going to help.” Jackson and Bryant have seemed to have hit rock bottom, both of them snapping at each other during the game.

Gasol denied that the two were having issues, “I think it’s just their passion for the game. Both of them are competitive.”

Jason Kidd and Kevin Durant were both able to sit out the whole second half. Kidd finished with 5 assists and played only in the first quarter while Durant had 15 points and 7 rebounds. “The less we play, the better,” Kidd said, “It means that we have a competitive team.” Durant chimed in, “Everyone called us arrogant after we let our guard down. I don’t think we are arrogant, we’re just confident in our own abilities. We have a great team here in Seattle.”

Adam Morrison was a star for the Stealth as he racked up 22 points from off the bench. Tyson scored 17 of his 20 points in the final quarter, joining in on a scoring duel with Bryant. Tyson had a number of dunks, with one of them a result of easily passing by Bryant at the top of the key. After he landed, the Staples Centre crowd were surprisingly cheering for the rookie.

After the game, Bryant sought out the youngster. “He told me that he thinks I’m a talent and that I need to keep my chin up especially after he hit all those shots in my face,” Tyson revealed about what Kobe had said to him, “I was never really a Kobe fan but I respect what he had to say. It was a nice move to come and talk to me after the game.”

Bryant later mentioned the rookie in his post-game interview, “Reshawn Tyson played a good game on me. He plays hard on both ends of the floor. He’s lucky to be playing with Kevin Durant, Jason Kidd. He can learn a lot from them.”

Notes: This was Reshawn Tyson’s first career start. George Karl did not say whether Tyson would start Game 5… Kobe Bryant can opt out of his contract this Summer… Seattle ended the second quarter on a 20-4 run before winning the third quarter 25-10… Seattle leads the series 3-1 and can close it out at home in two days… Stars who were in attendance were Denzel Washington, Adam Sandler, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Jack Black, and David and Victoria Beckham. Most of them were gone by the end of the third quarter…

Pistons Eliminate Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) – There would be no delaying the end of the series as Washington could not handle the might of the Detroit Pistons. In another convincing 119-107 win, Detroit displayed its full arsenal of firepower as six players scored in double figures. Allen Iverson led all players in scoring with 24 points, he also notched 8 assists and 3 steals.

Sasha Vujacic and Luther Head were lethal as each player scored 21 points from off the bench. “Our bench really stepped up,” Pistons Coach Michael Curry said, “This is what makes us such huge contenders. We have guys who can score in so many ways in our starting five and also on our bench.” Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallce, and Walter Herrmann all made it to double figures.

Nick Young led the Wizards with 22 points from off the bench. Gilbert Arenas finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists but had an inefficient shooting night. Antawn Jamison scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Slovenia’s Rookie PG Klemen Pirc was ejected after he attacked fellow countryman Vujacic late in the third quarter. The usually calm and soft-spoken Pirc was being guarded by Vujacic and lost the ball. As the ball rolled out of bounds, Vujacic was seen saying something to him before racing after the ball. Pirc was next seen chasing after Vujacic and knocking him out courtside. Pirc was held back by courtside spectators before security escorted him out of the arena. Vujacic was not hurt in the ordeal.

“Klemen is not usually like that,” Arenas said after the game, “Sasha must have said something really bad to him to trigger that reaction.” Pirc had 2 points and 5 assists in 15 minutes.

Boston Sweep Cleveland

April 24, 2010

CLEVELAND (AP) – The Cleveland Cavaliers tried hard to stave off elimination in Game 4 of their First Round matchup against the Boston Celtics but trying hard was not hard enough. The Cavs got off to a terrible start and trailed all the way till the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Cleveland won the final period 40-19 and needed every one of those 40 points to get back into the game.

LeBron James tied the game at 107-107 with 32.4 seconds left with a jumpshot from the elbow. After a timeout, Boston got the ball into Paul Pierce’s hands and Pierce was able to set up Ray Allen for a jumper of his own. Allen’s made basket put the Celtics ahead 109-107 with 9.8 seconds left in the game. Without any timeouts remaining, James was handed the ball and the Cavs fans were silent as the League MVP hurried up the floor with the rock against a full court press. With time winding down and James trapped near halfcourt, he was able to make a lucky pass to Wally Szcerbiak. After a flurry of passes, James was able to get the ball on the left wing. He then took a few dribbles towards the hoop and realised that the lane was crowded. Instead of passing, he decided to shoot.

James was unable to add to his tally of 17 points as his shot missed. Although he added 9 rebounds, 11 assists, and 5 steals, James’ poor shooting performance did not help the Cavs’ chances of prolonging the series as they crashed out in a four game sweep at the hands of Boston.

“We’re hungry,” Kevin Garnett said, “We want a second title.” Garnett had a double double of 14 points and 18 rebounds. Paul Pierce finished with 20 points, 8 assists, and Ray Allen topscored with 27. Rajon Rondo scored 20 of his own. Szcerbiak was the Cavs’ top scorer with 18 points as he and James led five other double figure scorers.

Orlando Magic Tie Series

ORLANDO (AP) – Hedo Turkoglu scored the game winning bucket in an exciting 120-118 win against the Miami Heat. Turkoglu finished the match with 29 points and Rashard Lewis chipped in 23. Turkoglu scored a turnaround jumper with just 2.4 seconds left to put the home team in front.

Dwyane Wade led his side vallantly and finished with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists but missed a potential game winning three pointer at the buzzer. James Jones chipped in 23 points. “We need to concentrate on our task,” Wade spoke of the next game, “We’ve lost two close games now. This series should be over.”

Minnesota Win Game 4 112-106

April 24, 2010

MINNESOTA (AP) – Mike Bibby put in another star performance. His 30 points and 7 assists helped the Wolves to even their series against the first seeded New Orleans Hornets. Bibby once again outplayed his younger opponent Chris Paul in Game 4, and after the game boasted that he has what it takes to stop Paul.

“You saw tonight how I stopped him,” Bibby stated, “Last game everyone blamed his bad performance on the flu but tonight I really stepped it up big time. If I can do it twice, it’s no fluke.” Paul was 4 for 15 from the field but still finished with 14 points and 15 assists. His coach, Byron Scott, said, “Chris may have shot the ball poorly but he was still a major factor. I don’t know why Bibby thinks he shut him down.”

Morris Peterson was the high scorer for New Orleans with 22 points and David West contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolves saw five players in dobule figures; Bibby was joined by Kevin Love, Randy Foye; scoring 13 apiece, and Rashad McCants and Andres Nocioni; scoring 11 each.

Denver Fail To Gain Advantage Returning Home

UTAH (AP) – Denver missed out on going home for a potential series-closing win. Instead, the Nuggets will need at least two more games to close out their opponents. Deron Williams turned it up when it matter, pouring in 23 points and dishing out 9 assists in a 112-104 Jazz win. Andre Miller was magic from off the bench as he shared time with Williams on the floor. The two of them combined to form a small backcourt partnership but was able to get the job done against the run and gun Nuggets. Miller scored 22 points while Mehmet Okur was also impressive with 17.

Carmelo Anthony scored 38 points, keeping his team in the game on multiple occasions. Anthony hit plenty of key shots down the stretch. JR Smith finshed with 15 points while Chauncey Billups had a quiet yet efficient 14 points and 9 assists. Rookie Andrew Watson had his first poor game of the series. He struggled throuhout and ended the match with just 10 points on 4 for 12 shooting.
