TEAM REPORT

The slow start to the season was not only hard for Portland fans; the frustration on the players’ faces was evident. A mid-month five game losing streak sucked any confidence out of an excited team with so much potential to make an impact after the surprise signing of two All-Star players: Steve Nash and Carlos Boozer.

“We thought we would be at the top from the start,” admits Brandon Roy, “But we came out stumbling and fell flat on our faces.”

The Blazers abundance of young talent and potential along with the experience and reputation of their new star players is as much of a boost to their playoffs hopes as it is a shortcoming. The Blazers had to knock back promising PG Jerryd Bayless to the bench to accommodate for Nash. They also had to make LeMarcus Aldridge their sixth man in order to start Boozer. Both players have played unspectacularly and this has impacted the Blazers; their second unit just isn’t performing.

However, the bench is the least of the team’s worries when even the starters aren’t putting in their best effort. Across the board, the starting lineup is underperforming. Greg Oden has not blossomed into the player many thought he would become. Boozer struggled from day one while the backcourt is playing average at best.

“It’s because we’ve just all met each other and with so many guys capable of being great individually, we just need some time to mesh and you should see a great ball club,” two-time MVP Steve Nash says. The PG may be right as the Blazers did get on a roll towards the end of the month, ending it with a four game winning streak. Wins over the Lakers, Spurs, and Magic were major confidence boosters for the team. Unfortunately, the streak was snapped by the Detroit Pistons in a 4 point loss.

On paper, the Blazers look like an All-Star team but in reality, the team isn’t playing like one; underachieving would be a massive understatement.

If the experiment does not work out, Steve Nash will most likely sign elsewhere next season but if it does (And Nash believes it will), the Blazers look a scary predicament to the rest of the NBA. As Nash said, “Give us some time.”

Jameer Nelson’s jumper holds Seattle back

ORLANDO (AP) – Kevin Durant scored 14 of his 38 points in the final quarter while David Lee added 9 fourth quarter points but the Seattle Stealth fell to a fourth straight loss against the Orlando Magic.

Jameer Nelson led the Magic with 19 points that included a pivotal bucket late in the game. Each team had six players in double figures in the high scoring affair. The Magic players, apart from Nelson, who scored at least 10 for the night were: Courtney Lee (23); Hedo Turkoglu (19); Dwight Howard (14); Keith Bogans (12); and Dwyane Jones (11). Rashard Lewis made up for a poor shooting night by being effective elsewhere on the floor and he finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals.

Durant led all scorers with 38 points. Lee and Jeff Green added 15 apiece while Jason Kidd, Brad Miller, and Reshawn Tyson finished with 10 points each.

The home team used a barrage of three pointers to build a handy double digit lead and seemed to be cruising to an easy win for the night. Orlando’s Lee and Bogans each hit four treys while Lewis and Turkoglu added three each of their own. However, as proceedings entered the final quarter, the visiting Stealth seemed to have intentions of their own.

In the game’s turning point, David Lee drew a charge early in the quarter. Whether it was by mere coincidence or if that play did energize the visitors; the Stealth went on a roll from that point on. Kidd led the team with his playmaking and two fourth quarter three pointers, finishing with 17 assists, while Lee and Durant were the main benefactors at the end of Kidd’s passes.

“Everything seemed to click, it’s a pity we got going so late in the game,” Durant said, “At least we know how to play them next time.”

Seattle would get as close as 7 points to Orlando after back to back three point plays from Durant would bring the game’s score to 110-117 with 1:17 left. Nelson would then come to his team’s aid with a back-breaking shot off the dribble with 48 seconds left. Howard grabbed a Courtney Lee long range miss and pass the rock out to Nelson. Nelson’s quickness was too much for Kidd as he darted away from him and calmly sank a jumper near the free throw line. “That shot sealed the deal for them,” Kidd admitted, “Kudos to Nelson for hitting it.”

Stealth Head Coach tired to hide his disappointment in his team’s recent slide, “At least we lost to them (Orlando) jacking up a lot of threes. They’re not going to hit so many of them every night. We came up unlucky tonight. Once they cooled off, we had a chance to snatch it from under their noses.”

Notes: Adam Morrison has been cleared to return to training, he has been suffering from a strained quad… Seattle were defeated all too easily on the boards as well as from behind the arc. George Karl called it a ‘recipe for losing’… Seattle will be happy to return home as their next two games will be played there; perhaps a chance to turn around their bad fortunes as of late. The Stealth have started December with three losses, all of them away games…

OJ Mayo glides over Jeff Green to add 2 of his game high 35 points

MEMPHIS (AP) – OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, and Mike Conley made sure that the Seattle Stealth would not finish the night with three wins on the trot. The three players combined for 87 of Memphis’ 109 points as the Grizzlies romped to a 12 point victory.

Conley ran the show for the Grizzlies as he finished with 27 points and 15 assists. Mayo and Gay could not be contained by the Stealth as they each reached 35 and 25 points respectively. “Those three guys really came up big against us, they basically scored at will,” Stealth Coach George Karl spoke of the three Grizzlies, “They just had so many methods of beating us by knocking down jumpers or getting buckets close to the hoop.”

Kevin Durant finished with 22 points while Jeff Green and Jason Kidd added 20 apiece. David Lee was plagued by foul trouble and finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds in limited playing time.

The game was close up until the final quarter in which Memphis pulled away from the visiting side but apart from a handful of highlight reel dunks, the game was fairly unspectacular. Coming off back to back wins against Dallas and Houston, Seattle was looking to extend their winning streak. However, it seemed that travelling from Houston to Memphis in one night had an ill-effect on the Stealth. “All of the guys weren’t playing with much energy tonight,” Durant said, “Too much flying I tell you.”

Notes: Adam Morrison may have healed from his strained quad injury but was unlucky enough to suffer a bruised heel in his latest attempt to return to the floor for Seattle. Team doctors expect him to be out for a fortnight… Darko Milicic has been a name thrown around by Seattle as a potential player to trade for. Milicic would add a defensive and rebounding presence to the weak Stealth frontcourt…

Reshawn Tyson’s ‘high flying act’ energized the crowd

SEATTLE (AP) – Reshawn Tyson dazzled his home fans with a dizzying display of acrobatic forays to the rim in a career night. Tyson came off the bench and established career highs in points (37), rebounds (6), assists (7), and blocks (5); coming away with a high-scoring win against his old college rival Moses Chara. Chara shook off a slow start to the game and finished with a respectable 33 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals.

“We all knew that if he (Tyson) is given a chance to play, he can play,” Jason Kidd, who had 14 assists, said, “The kid is a scoring machine and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a star in this league.” Tyson’s coach George Karl also praised his rookie guard, “I’ve been sort of tough with Reshawn as I know not many guys who are picked third in the Draft are stuck on the bench like he has been but it’s all for good reason. I want him to learn how to play so that when he is on the floor, he is helping us whenever he’s on the court. Tonight, he was definitely helping us win.”

Seattle started the game with a 12-2 run before finishing the quarter with an 8-0 run. The Kings entered the second quarter trailing 38-22 and never recovered. Sacramento did try to take advantage of the Seattle starters taking a break on the bench but Tyson did a more than capable job of keeping his team in front of the visiting side. Tyson scored 19 points in the second quarter including 14 straight points during a 4 minute span.

“I guess I just had the hot hand tonight,” Tyson smiled in his first ever podium interview, “I’m glad I played well tonight especially against Moses Chara.” Tyson was scoring at will against Chara who was given the task of slowing down his rival from their UNC-Duke days. Tyson led the Tar Heels to the 2008 NCAA Championship while Chara led the Blue Devils to the 2009 NCAA Championship. Both Championship Matches were played by the two teams.

When questioned about his defensive performance against Tyson, Chara responded, “It’s not like he was doing a good job on me, I scored most of my points against him.”

Jeff Green scored 32 points while Kevin Durant was able to knock off early after reaching 22. David Lee had his best performance as a member of the Stealth, notching a double double of 19 points and 13 rebounds; that included plenty of highlight reel-worthy dunks.

Kevin Martin, the hero of the last game played against Seattle in which he scored 52 points in a comeback win, struggled with his shooting but still managed to end the match with 31 points. Martin did need an outrageous37 shots to reach that total though. Veteran PG Steve Francis had a decent outing, finishing with 17 points and 6 assists.

Notes: Kings C Spencer Hawes was injured with 2:34 left in the game and had to be helped off the court… Tyson’s best friend and UNC teammate Rocky Akonnor put up a career high 12 points… Tyson nearly dunked over Chara on one play but Chara wisely moved out of Tyson’s path... The Stealth’s 153 points are a season high…

Tyson is on and off for me... with Morrison coming back and Green performing, doubtful he will get so many minutes again...
